Book excerpt: The Phoenician-Punic Dictionary is the most comprehensive word thesaurus of the Phoenician language yet collected and published, and a unique informational sourcebook for the Phoenician literature and culture. The entries are drawn from texts spanning more than thousand years of civilization, from Late Bronze Age to the Late Roman period, many appearing for the first time, among them specimens of traditional Phoenician poetry, Greek drama in Punic translation and Punic historiographic prose. The text sources of all entries appear in original translations, based on the author's research and publications of many years in Phoenician and Punic grammar and literature. The dictionary will be a useful and practical tool both for students of Phoenician language, literature and culture and for specialists in the study of the literatures and cultures of the Biblical and Classical worlds. Charles R. Krahmalkov is Professor of Ancient and Biblical Languages in the Department of Near Eastern Studies of the University of Michigan.

Book The Missing Years of Jesus

Download or read book The Missing Years of Jesus written by Dennis Price and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the incredible evidence of Jesus' life not covered by the Bible! The so-called ‘missing years of Jesus’ – the 18 years that are unaccounted for in the Bible from when Jesus was a boy of 12 to his sudden reappearance at the age of 30. Archaeologist and classical scholar Dennis Price has investigated the clues in Blake’s evocative poem 'Jerusalem' and has paid meticulous attention to the accounts in the ancient Aramaic and Greek versions of the Bible, and he’s also conducted an exhaustive and unprecedented study into the myths and legends of Christ in Britain. With the assistance of specialists in their own fields and by viewing this enthralling subject as a modern missing person’s investigation, Dennis Price has pieced together the various pieces of the jigsaw and now presents compelling and highly original evidence that Christ did indeed visit Britain in the company of Joseph of Arimathea ‘in ancient times’. The weight of new material suggests that Christ remained in Britain for several years before eventually returning to his homeland in the east, and this truly extraordinary book now provides a wealth of new information for all those who are intensely curious about this otherwise undocumented period in the life of the most famous person the world’s ever known. The implications are astonishing and they are presented here, in ‘the greatest story never told’.

Book Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Phoenician Culture

Download or read book Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Phoenician Culture written by Andrea Ercolani and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Phoenician Culture (EDPC) is the result of a wide-ranging international project and is intended to be an in-depth and up-to-date standard reference work for Phoenician studies. It is a series in the form of an encyclopaedia with the structure of a dictionary, comprising about 2,000 entries, written by circa 200 contributors from 20 different countries.Current knowledge on the Phoenicians and Carthaginians (with close attention to their various interactions with other cultures) will be presented as a sequence of themed volumes, all closely interrelated, dealing respectively with religion, language and written sources, socio-economic life, and archaeological sites of both the Levant and the Central and Western Mediterranean. As part of a collection, each volume should be considered as belonging to a set: in one sense independent but at the same time inseparable from the others in respect of both the amount of information and the network of cross-references linking the various lemmata. The present volume, dedicated to historical characters, is a compendium of historical and historically documented individuals, arranged alphabetically and organized using criteria that are meant to be as consistent as possible. Like the thematic volumes to follow, the present volume is a reference work: it is based on a piece by piece reconstruction of the whole of 'Phoenician' history (understood in its widest sense) through its various protagonists at every level.

Book Linguistic Studies in Phoenician

Download or read book Linguistic Studies in Phoenician written by Robert D. Holmstedt and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linguistic Studies in Phoenician: In Memory of J. Brian Peckham honors the late Professor J. Brian Peckham, a scholar who has been instrumental in furthering the cause of Phoenician studies over the past decades. His passion made him an exceptional teacher, and his research on Phoenician studies resulted in his Phoenicia: Episodes and Anecdotes from the Ancient Mediterranean (Eisenbrauns, 2014), which he finished just prior to his passing in September 2008. This collection of studies dedicated to his memory is aimed at advancing our understanding of the grammatical and historical features of the Phoenician language, a favorite topic that Professor Peckham rigorously studied and taught. The first set of studies concentrates on linguistic features of Phoenician qua Phoenician. They include investigations of phonology and morphology, as well as linguistic approaches to syntax and text-level pragmatics. The second set of studies seeks to situate aspects of the Phoenician language typologically or within comparative, etymological, and historical Semitics. The result is a group of studies covering topics ranging from case endings, negation, pronominal usage, and phonology to dialectology, etymologies, and text linguistics. Given the use of Phoenician throughout the Mediterranean littoral, this volume contains something of interest for numerous areas of investigation, including comparative Semitics, Anatolian, early Mediterranean, and even Hebrew and biblical studies.
