Book A Concise Handbook of Ancient and Modern Literature Issued Either Anonymously Under Pseudonyms Or Initials Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Concise Handbook of Ancient and Modern Literature Issued Either Anonymously Under Pseudonyms Or Initials Classic Reprint written by Frederick Marchmont and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Handbook of Ancient and Modern Literature, Issued Either Anonymously, Under Pseudonyms, or Initials That much, if not all, of the matter contained in this small book may be found in the four thick volumes of the above is highly probable, but I cannot express an Opinion on the subject, not having had the good fortune to be able to afford myself a copy, though it is a work I should dearly like to possess, and my advice to all who can afford it is get it by all means. In compiling this volume I have had to rely mainly on works which have come under my own observation, either as a Cataloguer or in the Sale Room. There is an admirable list in the older edition of Clegg's Directory of Book sellers, and I have been able to reduce the bulk of the present work a great deal by excluding mac/z matter which, though it has actually passed through my hands, may readily be found by referring to that useful little volume which is, doubtless, in the possession of most Booksellers to-day. My chief aim has been, not com petition with anything at present on the market (indeed as far as Halkett and Laing's work is concerned, in my opinion this would not be possible), but rather to supply, as far as in my power, information not readily to be found in Lowndes, Allibone, or Brunet; and in attempting the same, to study accuracy in detail. To ensure this I 'have spared neither time nor trouble. As may be supposed some errors have, doubtless, crept in, and with regard to these I shall be glad to receive notices and corrections from the reader, with a view to possible amendment in any future edition. The compilation of the work has been to me more of a pleasure than labour, and was not primarily executed as a means of making money. Should the little volume meet any present trade requirements, I shall consider myself more than repaid for my labour; and in putting it on the Market I do so with a hope that Booksellers, Librarians, and even Private Collectors, into whose hands the work may come, will find in its pages some information with which they were previously unacquainted. Book The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Biography

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Ancient Biography written by Koen De Temmerman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 793 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biography is one of the most widespread literary genres worldwide. Biographies and autobiographies of actors, politicians, Nobel Prize winners, and other famous figures have never been more prominent in book shops and publishers' catalogues. This Handbook offers a wide-ranging, multi-authored survey on biography in Antiquity from its earliest representatives to Late Antiquity. It aims to be a broad introduction and a reference tool on the one hand, and to move significantly beyond the state-of-the-art on the other. To this end, it addresses conceptual questions about this sprawling genre, offers both in-depth readings of key texts and diachronic studies, and deals with the reception of ancient biography across multiple eras up to the present day. In addition, it takes a wide approach to the concept of ancient biography by examining biographical depictions in different textual and visual media (epigraphy, sculpture, architecture) and by providing outlines of biographical developments in ancient and late antique cultures other than Graeco-Roman. Highly accessible, this book aims at a broad audience ranging from specialists to newcomers in the field. Chapters provide English translations of ancient (and modern) terminology and citations. In addition, all individual chapters are concluded by a section containing suggestions for further reading on their specific topic.

Book The Ancient Guide to Modern Life

Download or read book The Ancient Guide to Modern Life written by Natalie Haynes and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A wonderfully whimsical yet instructional view of Greco-Roman history.” —Kirkus Reviews In this thoroughly engaging book, Natalie Haynes brings her scholarship and wit to the most fascinating true stories of the ancient world. The Ancient Guide to Modern Life not only reveals the origins of our culture in areas including philosophy, politics, language, and art, it also draws illuminating connections between antiquity and our present time, to demonstrate that the Greeks and Romans were not so different from ourselves: Is Bart Simpson the successor to Aristophanes? Do the Beckhams have parallel lives with The Satiricon’s Trimalchio? Along the way Haynes debunks myths (gladiators didn’t salute the emperor before their deaths, and the last words of Julius Caesar weren’t “et tu, brute?”). From Athens to Zeno's paradox, this irresistible guide shows how the history and wisdom of the ancient world can inform and enrich our lives today. “A romp through some of the best-known, and some of the more obscure, writers, thought, and stories of Greece and Rome.” —Times Literary Supplement
