Download or read book A Concise Chronicle of Events of the Great War written by R. P. P. Rowe and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chronicle of the chief events of the war proves a useful and interesting record. The book gives the number of towns and villages, which were definitely connected with the war. It also mentions prominent villages so small that they are marked only in maps of an exceptionally large scale. The author's aim was to indicate accurately the position of every place which had a prominent role in that war.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Chronicle of Events of the Great War I trust that this chronicle of the chief events of the war will prove a useful and an interesting record. It has been decided to omit maps, because their inclusion within bounds less than cumbersome would prove practically worthless. The number of towns, as opposed to villages, which were definitely connected with the war is surprisingly small, and their locality is known to nearly every one. The great majority of places which the war has brought into prominence are villages so small that they are marked only in maps of an exceptionally large scale. What is required, therefore, for adequate study of the topography of the war, is either a moderate number of maps of great size or a far larger and confusing number less bulky but each covering only a small area. As the inclusion of either would necessitate a detached and cumbrous volume, I have in its absence taken pains to indicate accurately the posi tion of every place whose locality might be unfamiliar. In the following pages the names given to the battles, and the dates on which they began and ended, are from sources either official or authoritative. The same may be said of the strategical or tactical aims or results which I have in some cases noted - particularly in 1918. Download or read book The Story of the Great War Classic Reprint written by Roland G. Usher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Great War It was tragic that the men and women who fought the war were too busy to study it. The greatest peril of the new era is that they will still be too busy with reconstruction to devote even casual attention to the great event itself, in the light of which alone can the decisions be made by which the new era is to be shaped. People are weary of working and weary of reading. Yet there was never a time when effort was more necessary nor when a little would have such significant results upon national and international events. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the World War: With Chronology of Important Events When, to the world peoples, the news was flashed of the Austrian tragedy of June 28, 1914, there came no warning that it was of dread import. The nations journeyed almost to the brink of war in ignorance of its nearness. In America especially, if, a week later, one thought of the fateful assassination at all, it was only as the latest of a long series of such happenings in an unhappy empire. In Europe, men made their usual commercial, political, personal plans for August sand September, with no intimation that these plans would never be realized. Each nation had its problems at home and its differences abroad, but the settlement of these problems did not call for the slaughter, of the youth of the land. Europe was armed, but Europe had always been armed; there had been threats of war, just as there had always been threats, or worse. But in the last generation a strong sentiment for peace had spread. The more democratic nations had come to think of war between the great powers as a thing of the past. So it was that when every newspaper in the world carried the black news that the long threatened European war had begun and that nation after nation was being hurled headlong into the conflict, the wide world gasped in utter surprise at the bare fact of it. The immensity of it dazed the nations; the wantonness of it angered them. A great outcry arose against war and against autocratic power that could, without warning, convulse civilization. Download or read book Winning a Cause World War Stories Classic Reprint written by John Gilbert Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winning a Cause, World War Stories Lest We Forget, the first volume of World War stories, gave an outline of the struggle up to the time of the signing of the armistice, November 1918, and contained in general, chronological order most of the stories that to children from ten to sixteen years of age would be' of greatest interest, and give the clearest understanding of the titanic contest. This, the second volume of the same series, contains the stories of the war of the character described, that were not included in Lest We Forget, stories of the United States naval heroes, of the Americans landed in France, of the concluding events of the war, of the visit of President Wilson to Europe, and of the Peace Conference. In a word, emphasis is placed upon America's part in the struggle. This volume should be of even greater interest to American children than the first, for it tells the story of America's greatest achievement, of a nation under taking a tremendous and terrible task not for material gain, but for an ideal.
