Book A systematic revision of Baconia Lewis Coleoptera Histeridae Exosternini

Download or read book A systematic revision of Baconia Lewis Coleoptera Histeridae Exosternini written by Michael S. Caterino and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the genus Baconia Lewis (Histeridae: Histerinae: Exosternini). Previously, Baconia contained 27 species. We move four species into Baconia from other genera, and describe 85 species as new, bringing the total to 116 species. Identification keys are presented to allow identification of all the species, and most species are illustrated by color photographs and drawings of diagnostic characteristics. The species mainly occur in the Neotropical region. But several species are known from the U.S., and there are even species occurring in eastern and southeastern Asia. Many of the species of Baconia exhibit brilliant metallic coloration, a feature of as yet unknown significance. Many are also strongly flat-tened, an adaptation for a life under the bark of dead trees, where they are believed mainly to prey on bark beetles and their larvae.

Book A systematic revision of Operclipygus Marseul Coleoptera Histeridae Exosternini

Download or read book A systematic revision of Operclipygus Marseul Coleoptera Histeridae Exosternini written by Michael Stephen Caterino and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a comprehensive taxonomic revision of the hyperdiverse Neotropical beetle genus Operclipygus Marseul. Operclipygus occurs almost throughout the Americas, but there are few species that extend beyond the diverse tropical regions.ÿ The genus was originally defined very narrowly, for just a single unusual species (the type species O. sulcistrius). However, evolutionary considerations have led to a much broader conception of the genus, and it is now one of the largest in the entire family Histeridae, containing 177 species. In this paper 138 species are described as new. Identification keys are presented to allow identification of all the species, and most species are illustrated by color photographs and drawings of diagnostic characteristics. Natural history details for species of Operclipygus are scant, as most specimens have been collected through the use of passive flight interception traps. They are known to be predaceous, and many are probably generally associated with decaying vegetation and leaf litter, where they prey on small arthropods. But a small proportion are known to be inquilines, living in symbiotic relationships with social insects such as ants and termites, and also with some burrowing mammals, such as Tuco-tucos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three-volume series represents a comprehensive treatment of the beetles of Australia, a relatively under-studied fauna that includes many unusual and unique lineages found nowhere else on Earth. Volume 2 contains 36 chapters, providing critical information and identification keys to the genera of the Australian beetle families included in suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga, Adephaga and several groups of Polyphaga (Scirtoidea, Hydrophiloidea, Scarabaeoidea, Buprestoidea and Tenebrionidae). Each chapter is richly illustrated in black and white drawings and photographs. The book also includes colour habitus figures for about 1000 Australian beetle genera and subgenera belonging to the families treated in this volume. This volume is a truly international collaborative effort, as the chapters have been written by 23 contributors from Australia, China, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Poland and USA.

Book Hydrophiloidea Staphylinoidea 2 vols

Download or read book Hydrophiloidea Staphylinoidea 2 vols written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 1730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taxonomy provides the basic building blocks of our understanding of the diversity of life on this planet. It stems from innate human curiosity; confronted with an unknown species or object we ask "what is it?" Taxonomists recognize species and other systematic unities (the taxa), define them and place them within the framework of known organisms, providing the means for their subsequent identification. The Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera (edited by I. & D. Löbl) gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all living things in the world's largest biogeographical area. It fixes nomenclature needed for unambiguous transfer of information, gives information about the occurrence of species and subspecies, and contains references that provide key information of over 40,000 systematic units. The work is a scaffold for biotic surveys, ecological studies, and nature conservation. It responds also to the urgent need of assessment of the still left forms of life, actually threatened by the on-going destruction of habitats. Contributors are: Robert B. Angus, Martin Fikáček, Elio Gentili, Manfred A. Jäch, Fenglong Jia, Tomáš Lackner, Ivan Löbl, Sławomir Mazur, Yusuke Minoshima, Alfred F. Newton, Michel Perreau, Alexander Prokin, Marek Przewoźny, Jan Rŭžička, Sergey K. Ryndevich, Michael Schülke, André Skale, Aleš Smetana, Mikael Sörensson. The publication of the work was supported by the Muséum de la Ville de Genève, Geneva, Switzerland.

Book Coleoptera Beetles Morphology and Systematics

Download or read book Coleoptera Beetles Morphology and Systematics written by Rolf G. Beutel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 968 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revised edition of the first of three volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series which treats the systematics and biology of Coleoptera. With over 380,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. Moreover, numerous species are tremendously important economically. The beetle volumes meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages, phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.

Book Australian Beetles Volume 1

Download or read book Australian Beetles Volume 1 written by Adam Slipinski and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 1328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three-volume series represents a comprehensive treatment of the beetles of Australia, a relatively under-studied fauna that includes many unusual and unique lineages found nowhere else on Earth. Volume 1 contains keys to all 117 beetle families found in Australia, and includes over 1100 illustrations of adults, larvae and anatomical structures. This volume is based in part on Lawrence & Britton’s out-of-print Australian Beetles, but is fully updated and expanded. The biology and morphology for all major beetle lineages is described and illustrated, along with anatomical terms which clarify the characters and terminology used in the keys; few other resources for beetle identification include such a detailed morphological background. A chapter on the fossil record is also included, and family sections provide full descriptions of adults and larvae, including the world distribution of each family. The revised identification keys (currently recognised as one of the most valuable keys worldwide) will aid quarantine agents, biologists and students in identifying members of the most species-rich order of animals.

Download or read book Archostemata Myxophaga Adephaga written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 1477 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera gives a taxonomic overview of the most diverse group of all organisms living in the world-largest biogeographical area. The present volume is an updated edition of the first issue in 2003 but restricted to data published before the year 2000. It contains information about 33,914 taxa (together with synonyms), and increases the number of included species and other taxa by almost 5,000. In addition, thousands of species have their distributional data completed, and their ranks, systematic positions and nomenclature corrected. Almost two hundred new acts fix systematics and nomenclature, and numerous problems are discussed. Even such well known genera as Calosoma and Carabus, or tribes as Bembidiini and Panagaeini, are completely reorganized compared to the previously published catalogues. Thus, the work is a scaffold for biotic surveys, ecological studies, and nature conservation. It responds to the urgent need of an assessment of the still remaining forms of life, threatened by the on-going destruction of habitats. Taxonomy provides the basic building blocks of our understanding of the diversity of life. It stems from innate human curiosity: confronted with an unknown species we ask first “what is it”?
