Book A Computer Program for Earthquake Analysis of Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic Interaction

Download or read book A Computer Program for Earthquake Analysis of Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic Interaction written by P. Chakrabarti and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program for earthquake analysis of gravity dams including effects of hydrodynamic interaction is presented. The dam-water system is idealized as two-dimensional in geometry, the material behavior is assumed to be linearly elastic, and the transverse horizontal as well as the vertical component of ground motion are considered. The dam is represented as a finite element system, whereas water in the reservoir is treated as a continum of infinite length in the upstream direction governed by the wave equation. Compressibility of water is considered resulting in governing equations for the dam depending on the excitation frequency. The analysis is performed in the frequency domain, first obtaining the frequency responses and then Fourier Synthesizing them by Fast Fourier Transform procedures to obtain responses to arbitrary ground motion. A listing of the computer program is included and the usage and capabilities are illustrated by examples. (Author).

Book Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic and Foundation Interaction Effects

Download or read book Earthquake Response of Concrete Gravity Dams Including Hydrodynamic and Foundation Interaction Effects written by Anil K. Chopra and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general procedure for analysis of the response of concrete gravity dams, including the dynamic effects of impounded water and flexible foundation rock, to the transverse (horizontal) and vertical components of earthquake ground motion is presented. The problem is reduced to one in two dimensions, considering the transverse vibration of a monolith of the dam. The system is analyzed under the assumption of linear behavior for the concrete, foundation rock and water. The complete system is considered as composed of three substructures -- the dam, represented as a finite element system, the fluid domain, as a continuum of infinite length in the upstream direction, and the foundation rock region as a viscoelastic halfplane. The structural displacements of the dam are expressed as a linear combination of Ritz vectors, chosen as normal modes of an associated undamped dam-foundation system. The effectiveness of this analytical formulation lies in its being able to produce excellent results by considering only a few Ritz vectors. The modal displacements due to earthquake motion are computed by synthesizing their complex frequency responses using Fast Fourier Transform procedures. The stress responses are calculated from the modal displacements. An example analysis is presented to illustrate results obtained from this analytical procedure. Computation times for several analyses are presented to illustrate effectiveness of the procedure.

Book Earthquake Response of Gravity Dams Including Reservoir Interaction Effects

Download or read book Earthquake Response of Gravity Dams Including Reservoir Interaction Effects written by P. Chakrabarti and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Influence of hydrodynamic interaction on the dynamic behavior of dams is reduced to two dimensions; the material behavior is assumed to be linearly elastic. For analysis in the frequency domain, the system is considered as two substructures: (1) the dam as a finite element system and (2) the reservoir's fluid as a continuum of infinite length upstream governed by the wave equation. The displacements of the dam including hydrodynamic effects are expressed in linear combination of the modes of vibration of the dam with the reservoir empty. The analysis produces exact results if all modes of vibration are included; however it effectively produces excellent results by considering only the first few modes, thus drastically reducing the number of unknowns. Numerical results for complex frequency responses and responses to earthquake ground motions show: (1) hydrodynamic interaction and compressibility of water must be considered to obtain accurate results for the periods of vibration and response to earthquakes, (2) water in the reservoir significantly increases the lateral displacements from earthquake motion; however, the stresses may not increase, depending on the ground motion frequency characteristics, and (3) compared to many classes of structures, the vertical component of ground motion is more important in the response of gravity dams.

Book Seismic Analysis of Gravity Dams

Download or read book Seismic Analysis of Gravity Dams written by Robert A. Cole and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated methods for analyzing the stability of concrete gravity dams with respect to tensile cracking under the dynamic loadings caused by earthquakes. The effects of the interaction of hydrodynamic and inertial loads were investigated by comparing the evaluation of each method of analysis with the results produced by the well-known program EADHI. A new simplified method of analysis was developed using the finite element method of analysis to determine the dam's inertial response along with Chopra's simplified procedure for estimating the hydrodynamic loading. This new approach was implemented in a user-friendly computer program. The program was tested against a wide variety of problems and found to produce acceptable results. A sample run using this program via the time-sharing system on the WES computer is included in this report along with the results of the evaluations and a listing of the program. Keywords: Dams; Dynamic response; Earthquake engineering; Finite element analysis; Gravity dam stability.

Book A Computer Program for Earthquake Analysis of Dams

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general computer program based on the finite element method of analysis of linearly elastic dam cross-sections subjected to earthquakes is presented. It is applicable to the analysis of concrete gravity dams and earth dams. This program utilizes a recently developed plane stress quadrilateral element, and the equations of motion are solved by the mode superposition method using the fastest known subroutines for computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors. The FORTRAN IV listing of the program is included and the usage and capabilities of the program are illustrated by examples. (Author).
