Book A Comprehensive Sociological Dictionary

Download or read book A Comprehensive Sociological Dictionary written by Taron McKenzie and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of this dictionary is designed to help students master the vocabulary used in the scientific discipline of sociology. I believe that an enhanced understanding of the vocabulary used by sociologists in their quest to discover social facts leads to a better understanding of the discipline by students. It is not easy to compile a dictionary of sociological terms, concepts, and processes because the discipline is a living discipline unlike some other scientific areas of study. Sociology is always evolving-terms, theories, and processes change as the discipline adapts to the changing social world. This dictionary represents an effort to incorporate those changes into the science known as sociology.

This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I believe one way to help master a scientific discipline is to master its vocabulary. I have created this glossary for that reason. In the beginning, I used this glossary to help students in my introductory class learn relevant sociological terms that had a direct impact on their successful learning of material presented in that course. It was such a success in my introductory class, that I now use it in all of my sociology courses. In addition to being quizzed on chapter material for each textbook, I also quiz my students over 15 to 30 words from the glossary for each chapter module. I believe, and students agree, that the aforementioned practise leads to a better understanding of sociology on their part, and too, a greater depth of sociological understanding. It is not easy to compile a glossary of sociological terms, concepts, and processes because the discipline is a living discipline unlike some other scientific areas of study. For instance, geologists might discover more components of a rock than previously thought, but the rock is still a rock and has not changed. Sociology on the other hand, by being a living discipline is always evolving-terms, theories, and processes come and go as the discipline adapts to the changing social world. Because of this, this glossary is ever-changing.

I have created this comprehensive glossary for that reason. Understanding the "language" of any scientific discipline allows students to understand the foundation on which all scientific knowledge for that discipline is built. I use this glossary to help students in my introductory class learn that sociological "language." This glossary was such a success in my introductory class, that I now that I now use it in all of my sociology courses. Sociology on the other hand, by being a living discipline is always evolving-terms, theories, and processes come and go as the discipline adapts to the changing social world. As this is my first published edition, there will no doubt be a second, third, and further editions-each modified to reflect these changes of the living discipline of sociology.

Book A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences

Download or read book A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences written by G. Mitchell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed especially to meet the needs of beginners in all the social sciences, "A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences" follows its highly successful distinguished predecessor initially issued as "A Dictionary of Sociology" first published in 1968. Many of the entries have been revised and updated to keep abreast of the proliferation in the vocabulary of the social sciences. The volume remains on excellent single source for definitions in social research. The entries include social psychological terms, terms in social and cultural anthropology, terms common to political science, social administration and social work. In the choice of words, a generous definition of social science was employed, making the dictionary a very useful reference source for all beginners in the social sciences. Some terms are explained quite briefly while others are given lengthy treatment, according to the further assumptions that some sociological terms can imply. Thus, long entries are given on words, such as authority, consensus, phenomenology, role, social stratification, structuralism, whereas short and succinct entries suffice for words such, as agnate, eidos, or mores. A number of short biographical sketches are also included. The contributors are all scholars working in universities, predominantly in the United Kingdom and the United States. More than a glossary, "A New Dictionary of the Social Sciences" helps the student understand some of the theoretical considerations underlying the use of sociological terms, as well as something of their history, and therefore resembles an encyclopaedia in its scope and depth of information.
