Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of this dictionary is designed to help students master the vocabulary used in the scientific discipline of sociology. I believe that an enhanced understanding of the vocabulary used by sociologists in their quest to discover social facts leads to a better understanding of the discipline by students. It is not easy to compile a dictionary of sociological terms, concepts, and processes because the discipline is a living discipline unlike some other scientific areas of study. Sociology is always evolving-terms, theories, and processes change as the discipline adapts to the changing social world. This dictionary represents an effort to incorporate those changes into the science known as sociology.

Book excerpt: This new dictionary includes additional concepts, terms, and names than in the previous version in my continuing effort to make this dictionary fully comprehensive and useful for sociology students. The use of this dictionary is designed to help students master the vocabulary used in the scientific discipline of sociology. For instance, geologists might discover more components of a rock than previously thought, but the rock is still a rock and has not changed. Sociology on the other hand, by being a living discipline is always evolving--terms, theories, and processes come and go as the discipline adapts to the changing social world. Because of this, this dictionary is ever-changing.

Book A Comprehensive Sociological Glossary with Examples and Study Questions

Download or read book A Comprehensive Sociological Glossary with Examples and Study Questions written by Taron McKenzie and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I believe one way to help master a scientific discipline is to master its vocabulary. I have created this comprehensive glossary for that reason. Understanding the "language" of any scientific discipline allows students to understand the foundation on which all scientific knowledge for that discipline is built. I use this glossary to help students in my introductory class learn that sociological "language." This glossary was such a success in my introductory class, that I now that I now use it in all of my sociology courses. In addition to being quizzed on chapter material from a textbook, I also quiz my students over 15 to 30 words from the glossary for each chapter module. Students agree that the aforementioned practise leads to a better understanding of sociology on their part and a greater depth of sociological understanding. It is not easy to compile a glossary of sociological terms, concepts, and processes because the discipline is a living discipline unlike some other scientific areas of study. For instance, geologists might discover more components of a rock than previously thought, but the rock is still a rock and has not changed. Sociology on the other hand, by being a living discipline is always evolving-terms, theories, and processes come and go as the discipline adapts to the changing social world. Because of this, this glossary is ever-changing. As this is my first published edition, there will no doubt be a second, third, and further editions-each modified to reflect these changes of the living discipline of sociology.

Book A Critical Dictionary of Sociology

Download or read book A Critical Dictionary of Sociology written by Raymond Boudon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-10 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike most other sociology or social science dictionaries, in this translation of the Critical Dictionary of Sociology, taken from the second French edition of the Dictionary and edited by the English sociologist Peter Hamilton, the critical value of this distinctive work is at last made available for a wider audience. Each entry grapples directly with an issue, whether theoretical, epistemological, philosophical, political or empirical, and provides a strong statement of what the authors think about it. The discussions are considered but argumentative. By reaffirming that a non-marxist style of critique is still possible, Boudon and Bourricaud have presented a distinctive approach to the key issues which confront the societies of the Twentieth and Twenty-First centuries. For some this work will be a textbook, for others an indispensable sourcebook of sociological concepts, and for most a way of opening our eyes to new dimensions in our understanding of the great ideas and theories of sociology.

Book Dictionary of Sociology

Download or read book Dictionary of Sociology written by Henry Pratt Fairchild and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1944-01-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface: Every science must have its special vocabulary or terminology. Sciences deal with ideas, thoughts, and concepts, and these must be expressed in words. Even the facts which are the groundwork of science must be set forth largely in words. No science, therefore, can have any more precision and exactitude than the words or other symbols, such as mathematical or chemical formulae, in which it is embodied. Quite generally, this situation calls for a special dictionary or glossary for each particular science.
