Book A Comprehensive Guide to Wellness in Law

Download or read book A Comprehensive Guide to Wellness in Law written by James Gray Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the legal profession, the pursuit of justice often comes at a cost-a toll on the mental health and well-being of lawyers. Burnout, depression, and elevated rates of anxiety are critical issues affecting the legal community. Recent studies from Massachusetts and California/District of Columbia reveal alarming statistics, shedding light on the mental health challenges within the profession. I am not writing this book as an academic exercise. In 2004, at the height of my legal career, I had a nervous breakdown and quit practicing law. I was a third-generation trial lawyer in North Carolina, AV rated in the Martindale-Hubbell law directory by my peers. I had many friends and colleagues. Yet, despite doing everything "right," I was hiding a dark secret which nearly destroyed my soul. I was desperately unhappy, wrestling with demons, PTSD, and addiction. I looked to alternative medical practices to heal myself. I had been in conventional "talk" therapy for years, but it wasn't even scratching the surface of the demons of my past, my obesity, my exhaustion, and my shame. I felt something new was required to heal my deep-seated issues, and I found it in alternative medicine and coaching. I am writing this book to share a message of hope and redemption for all lawyers struggling with stress, anxiety, depression, or addiction. I have survived all those issues and want to guide you to the resilience you need to achieve happiness, satisfaction, confidence, and success. The identities of the lawyers that are discussed here have been changed to protect privacy, but the symptoms and the results are real"--

Book The Law Student s Guide to Doing Well and Being Well

Download or read book The Law Student s Guide to Doing Well and Being Well written by Shailini Jandial George and published by Carolina Academic Press LLC. This book was released on 2021 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ABA and most state bar associations have identified a wellness crisis in the legal profession, and called for educating students on how to better cope with the challenges of law school and practice. At the same time, students must learn how to maximize their brain health so that they perform well in law school and on behalf of their clients in practice. The same way musicians would tune their instruments, or chefs would sharpen their knives, law students must sharpen their minds. This book aims to help students "do well" in their ability to learn, and "be well" in the process, by exploring the deep connection between brain health and wellness. Specifically, the book discusses: How to cultivate the ability to deeply focus and deal with the challenges of the 24/7 digital age How stress affects both brain and body How increasing resilience helps deal with challenges and setbacks Why we need exercise for mental, physical, and brain health Why adequate sleep is important and how it can be improved How what we eat affects the brain and one's physical performance Written in a witty, informative, and easy-to-read style, the book is full of suggestions to help students establish healthy and productive habits which will benefit both brain and body. Each chapter ends with a self-reflection exercise to help students take the material and consciously begin implementing its suggestions. This book could be used in orientation programs, academic support and wellness programming, professional development, mindfulness, and other "preparing for practice" courses"--

This book was released on 2017 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. When untreated, depression affects lawyers and their clients, families, friends, and colleagues. In addition to the effects of mental health conditions on lawyers' lives, the same disorders can lead to substantial disciplinary issues that threaten attorneys' ability to practice law. Unfortunately, for many struggling with burdens like depression, it is only when they reach their breaking point, or encounter unavoidable professional consequences, that they feel ready to reach out for assistance. So many benefits could be derived if the problems that can grow to consume a lawyer's life and career are solved early. Authors Shawn Healy, Ph.D. and Jeffrey Fortgang, Ph.D. work directly with lawyers, law students, and judges who are suffering because of depression. In this book they offer hope through practical, realistic recommendations to help lawyers and the people who care about them understand the causes and symptoms of depression, various forms of treatment, and how to help a lawyer who may suffer from the condition." -- Publisher's website.
