Book Ancient Synagogues of Southern Palestine 300 800 C E

Download or read book Ancient Synagogues of Southern Palestine 300 800 C E written by Steven H. Werlin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the failure of the Bar-Kokhba revolt in the second century, the majority of the Jewish population of Palestine migrated northward away from Jerusalem to join the communities of Jews in Galilee and the Golan Heights. Although rabbinic sources indicate that from the second century onward the demographic center of Jewish Palestine was in Galilee, archaeological evidence of Jewish communities is found in the southern part of the country as well. In The Ancient Synagogues of Southern Palestine, 300-800 C.E., Steve Werlin considers ten synagogues uncovered in southern Palestine. Through an in-depth analysis of the art, architecture, epigraphy, and stratigraphy, the author demonstrates how monumental, religious structures provide critical insight into the lives of those who were strangers among Christians and Muslims in their ancestral homeland.

Book Muthanna Mirror Writing in Islamic Calligraphy

Download or read book Muthanna Mirror Writing in Islamic Calligraphy written by Esra Akin-Kivanç and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muthanna, also known as mirror writing, is a compelling style of Islamic calligraphy composed of a source text and its mirror image placed symmetrically on a horizontal or vertical axis. This style elaborates on various scripts such as Kufic, naskh, and muhaqqaq through compositional arrangements, including doubling, superimposing, and stacking. Muthanna is found in diverse media, ranging from architecture, textiles, and tiles to paper, metalwork, and woodwork. Yet despite its centuries-old history and popularity in countries from Iran to Spain, scholarship on the form has remained limited and flawed. Muthanna / Mirror Writing in Islamic Calligraphy provides a comprehensive study of the text and its forms, beginning with an explanation of the visual principles and techniques used in its creation. Author Esra Akin-Kivanc explores muthanna's relationship to similar forms of writing in Judaic and Christian contexts, as well as the specifically Islamic contexts within which symmetrically mirrored compositions reached full fruition, were assigned new meanings, and transformed into more complex visual forms. Throughout, Akin-Kivanc imaginatively plays on the implicit relationship between subject and object in muthanna by examining the point of view of the artist, the viewer, and the work of art. In doing so, this study elaborates on the vital links between outward form and inner meaning in Islamic calligraphy.

Book Betsaida Bethsaida Julias et Tell

Download or read book Betsaida Bethsaida Julias et Tell written by Heinz-Wolfgang Kuhn and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2015-02-18 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Oil lamps existed in ancient times for both ritual and everyday use and were, for thousands of years, the only means of light when darkness fell. Accompanying an exhibition at the Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem in 2004-2005, this book begins with a short discussion by Amit Assis of more than 3,00 years of their use, significance, context and features. He examines their practical ise in providing light, technological and structural features and their symbolism in mediating between light and dark, life and death. The catalogue entries include a photograph of each example and information on date, size and a description of the lamp itself and its decoration. Although a few lamps from the Bronze and Iron Ages are included, most examples are from the 1st century AD to the beginning of Islam.
