Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Scientific Grammar of the English Language English Grammar is at present in the same condition in which Copernicus found Astronomy, when it was taught that the earth is the great centre of the Universe, and that the sun, moon, planets, and stars revolve about it once in twenty-four hours. The text books are filled with a mass of absurdity and contradiction totally unworthy of the name of science; and the time and labor of those who use them are worse than wasted. This state of things is a disgrace to the scholarship of the age, and calls loudly for a reformation. The absolute truth of these statements can easily be demonstrated; but there is no room in this volume for such matter. Lest, however, any one should think the author to be peculiar and extreme in his views, let a few others be heard. President Eliot, of Harvard University, says "I consider the present system of teaching English Grammar in our elementary schools irrational and fruitless." Prof. Child, of the same University, says "I do not know that I ever before saw an English Grammar which I would permit my children to look into, so great the chance has been that they would learn nothing or be taught something false." The New England Journal of Education agrees with Mr. Epes Sargent in calling our ordinary grammars "a blot on American scholarship." The New York Evening Post refers to the common system as "an ii rational system"; and the Maryland School Journal calls it "a nauseous mixture for unfortunate juveniles." Similar testimonies might be multiplied indefinitely; and they seem to harmonize perfectly with the author's views. They are undoubtedly sound testimonies; and there is in fact abundant reason for the almost universal dissatisfaction with English Grammar as taught in our schools. Book Scientific English

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This entertaining and highly readable book gives anyone writing in the sciences a clear and easy-to-follow guide to the English language. English is often regarded as one of the most difficult languages to master. Yet while the English language has a vocabulary of upwards of 500,000 words, it only uses nine parts of speech, and all of these words fall into one (or more) of those nine categories. Scientific English: A Guide for Scientists and Other Professionals, Third Edition contains many simple revelations like this that make effective scientific writing in English easy, even for those whose fluency is in another language. The book is organized around a basic guide to English grammar that is specifically tailored to the needs of scientists, science writers, science educators, and science students. The authors explain the goals of scientific writing, the role of style, and the various kinds of writing in the sciences, then provide a basic guide to the fundamentals of English and address problem areas such as redundancies, abbreviations and acronyms, jargon, and foreign terms. Email, online publishing, blogs, and writing for the Web are covered as well. This book is designed to be an enlightening and entertaining read that can then be retained as a practical scientific writing reference guide.

Book A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language

Download or read book A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language written by Simon Kerl and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language: For the Use of Schools It is generally admitted, at least by those persons who frequently have occa sion to write the English language, that the knowledge of this subject, obtained in our schools, is not sufficient for the various requirements of life. In the fol lowing pages we therefore ofi'er to the public an English Grammar that is de signed to be, for practical purposes, more thorough than any other we have seen, the very largest not excepted. In its matter, it does not difi'er much from other grammars, except that it has more, and that much of it is fresh from the original sources of the science. What ever others have written on the subject, I have endeavored to ascertain; though I trust I have treated them less piratically and censoriously than most of them have treated their predecessors. The incidental remarks on grammar, made by reviewers, philologists, and other writers, have been diligently sought and con eidstod. The best grammars of foreign languages have also been consulted, especially those of Becker, Vivier, Andrews, Crosby and Kiihner. Of the axer cises to be corrected, about one half are the best 011 those which form the com! Mon inheritsme of the science; and for the others I have red some work or works fi'om every State in the Union, in order that the book may show all the various kinds of errors which are now current, like undetected counterfeit money, in the various parts of our country. If children imbibed no errors at home, it were well to exclude such exercises from grammars: but when a person has already caught a disease, I suppose it is best to convince him of his condition, and show him how to t rid of it. Errors in spelling, and errors manufactured by grammarians, are course objectionable; but errors that are gathered from the usage of good writers are a very different thing. Besides, parsing and an alysis. When used alone, become too monotonous and wearisome, and hardly suffice to teach the correct use of the language. Book The Grammar of the English Tense System

Download or read book The Grammar of the English Tense System written by and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grammar of the English Tense System forms the first volume of a four-volume set, The Grammar of the English Verb Phrase. The other volumes, to appear over the next few years, will deal with mood and modality, aspect and voice. The book aims to provide a grammar of tense which can be used both as an advanced reference grammar (for example by MA-level or postgraduate students of English or linguistics) and as a scientific study which can act as a basis for and stimulus to further research. It provides not only a wealth of data but also a unique framework for the study of the English tense system, which achieves great predictive and explanatory power on the basis of a limited number of relatively simple rules. The framework provided allows for an analysis of the semantics of individual tenses which reflects the role of tenses not only in locating situations in time relative to speech time but also in relating situations in time relative to one another to form temporally coherent discourse. Attention is paid to the relations between tenses. On the one hand, we can identify sets of tenses linked to particular temporal areas such as the past or the future. These sets of tenses provide for the expression of a system of temporal relations in a stretch of discourse in which all the situations are located within the same temporal area. On the other hand, there are many contexts in which speakers might in theory choose between two or more tenses to locate a situation (e.g., when we choose between the past tense and the present perfect to locate a situation before speech time), and the book examines the difference that a choice of one or the other tense may make within a discourse context. The book moves from a detailed exploration of the meaning and use of individual tenses to a thorough analysis of the way in which tenses can be seen to function together as sets, and finally to a detailed examination of tenses in, and tenses interacting with, temporal adverbials. Original data is used frequently throughout the book to illustrate the theory discussed.

Preface Grammar is without a doubt one of the most daunting aspects of the English language, an area riddled with complexities, inconsistencies, and contradictions. It has also been in a state of flux for pretty much its entire existence. For native speakers of English, as well as forthose learning it as a new language, grammar presents a very serious challenge to speaking and writing both accurately and effectively.Having a single, reliable, go-to reference guide should therefore be indispensable to those trying to learn, improve, or perfect their speechor writing. This book is that guide: a clear, unambiguous, and comprehensive source of information that covers all the relevant topics ofEnglish grammar, while still being easy to understand and enjoyable to read. Every topic in the book has been broken down into basic units. Each unit can be read and understood in its own right, but throughout thebook you will find cross-references to other sections and chapters to help make it clear how all the pieces fit together. If you're havingtrouble understanding something, try going back (or forward) to other related topics in the book. Finally, it must be mentioned that, because English is such a flexible, inconsistent language, the "rules" that are often bandied about areusually not rules at all, but rather guides that reflect how the language is used. Accordingly, the guidelines contained within this book arejust that-guidelines. They are not intended to provide constrictive or proscriptive rules that confine everyone to a particular way ofspeaking or writing. Learning how the English language works will enhance your engagement with speech and writing every day, from the books you read, tothe e-mails you write, to the conversations you have with friends and strangers alike. As such, mastering grammar is not an exercise that is confined to the classroom. While it is certainly important to learn the structures, styles, and rules that shape the language, the key to truly learning English is to read and listen to the way people write and speak everyday, from the most well-known authors to the people you talk to on the bus. Take the information you find in this book and carry it withyou into the world. -P. Herring
