Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Doberman Pinschers have a reputation. They are alert watchdogs, fearless war-dogs and loyal protectors of their owners. Karl Lewis Dobermann envisioned a faithful and steadfast companion when he developed the breed in the 19th century. There is no historical record of the various breeds that helped comprise the Doberman's genetic mix, but many speculate that the Doberman is a product of breeds such as the Manchester Terrier, the greyhound, the Weimaraner, and the Rottweiler. The dogs were bred to optimize quick reaction time, speed, power, and ferocity. This has helped to influence the reputation that has followed the Doberman Pinscher over the years. The breed has been repeatedly, and often unfairly, saddled with a reputation for being vicious and untrustworthy. The reputation is largely a product of exaggeration in the media and fear-mongering. Any claims regarding the Doberman Pinscher viciousness have been mitigated by the fact that breeders have worked to eliminate extraordinary aggression from the breeding pool in recent years. The modern American Doberman Pinscher is considerably less ferocious than its ancestors. MEET THE AUTHOR Pauline T. is an experienced writer and a member of the Hyperink Team, which works hard to bring you high-quality, engaging, fun content. Happy reading! EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The Doberman Pinscher is often described as a "medium-sized" breed, but this description depends on an one's frame of reference. The standard height of the breed is roughly 28 inches. They typically weigh between 70 and a 100 pounds. The Dobermans long, lanky legs also tend to give an illusion of even greater size. Many consider Dobermans to be a rather large dog. The most unique aspects of the breeds appearance are their cropped ear and docked tail. The pointed, erect ears of the Doberman symbolise the its power and predatory skills. Pointed ears aid the canine in hunting and stalking its prey. Breeders have maintined the Dobermans natural predatory traits, while domesticating the breed and familiarizing the breed with humans. Cropping the ears involves cutting away the outer parts of the ear, and then using a technique called "posting" which causes them to stand erect. While not presently illegal in the united States, the process of cropping ears and docking tails is against the law in many countries around the world. The dog's reputation as an attack dog, combined with its look, provide a unique, distinctive appearance that seems to signal the breed's willingness and ability to protect its home and family. Book excerpt: As much a favorite in the United States as it is in its native Germany, the Doberman Pinscher remains one of the world's most recognizable guardian breeds. Prized for versatility, intelligence, and sleek good looks, the Doberman excels in various forums, including dog shows, working trials, military and police work, assistance dog roles for the blind and deaf, and therapy work. As the history chapter depicts, the Doberman Pinscher was the brain child of Herr Louis Dobermann, who needed a protection dog to accompany him on his rounds as a tax collector. That the breed's history only goes back to the mid-1830s makes the Doberman Pinscher a fairly new breed to come into the world of purebred dogs. A powerful and stanch protection breed, the Doberman is not a dog for everyone, as author Lou-Ann Cloidt explains in the chapter on characteristics. If a potential owner understands the demands and requirements of this breed, in terms of training, exercise, socialization, and so forth, and still believes that he or she will make a qualified, responsible owner, then this Comprehensive Owner's Guide provides all the information a he or she wants and needs to become the best possible owner of a Doberman Pinscher. New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, exercise, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doberman Pinscher Introduction to the Breed The Doberman Pinscher, often simply referred to as Doberman, is a medium to large-sized breed known for its elegance, strength, and intelligence. This breed is recognized for its sleek appearance, muscular build, and alert demeanor. Dobermans are highly versatile dogs, excelling in various roles such as family pets, guard dogs, and working dogs. They possess a unique combination of loyalty, protectiveness, and trainability, making them popular choices among dog enthusiasts worldwide. Origins Early History The Doberman Pinscher originated in Germany during the late 19th century. The breed was developed by a tax collector named Louis Dobermann, who aimed to create a loyal and protective dog to accompany him during his work. To achieve this, he selectively bred various dog breeds, including the Rottweiler, German Pinscher, Greyhound, and Weimaraner. Through careful breeding practices, Dobermann sought to create a breed that embodied both physical strength and intelligence. Development of the Breed After Louis Dobermann's death in 1894, other breeders took up the task of refining and standardizing the Doberman Pinscher. German breeders, notably Otto Goeller and Philip Gruening, played crucial roles in shaping the breed's appearance and temperament. The breed gained popularity for its exceptional working abilities, including serving in military and police roles. The Doberman Pinscher Club of America (DPCA) was founded in 1921, further establishing the breed's presence and promoting responsible breeding practices. Recognition and Modern Day The Doberman Pinscher gained recognition as a distinct breed, with official standards established by kennel clubs around the world. In 1908, the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Over the years, Dobermans have continued to excel in various fields, such as obedience trials, agility competitions, search and rescue operations, and as therapy dogs. Today, they are cherished companions, loyal protectors, and valued members of many households. In conclusion, the Doberman Pinscher is a remarkable breed with a rich history and versatile capabilities. Their striking appearance, combined with their intelligence and loyalty, has made them beloved companions and working dogs across the globe.
