Book excerpt: Christian Gnaegi and his wife, Elizabeth, emigrated from Switzerland and settled in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, between 1750 and 1760. They were the parents of ten children. Christian and Elizabeth moved to land near Scio, Harrison County, Ohio, in 1807. He died there in 1812. Descendants listed, chiefly descendants of his son, Johannes Gnaegi (d. 1845) of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Iowa, Maryland, Illinois, and elsewhere. Most descendants spelled their surname "Gnagey.".

His second wife was Magdalena Yoder or Swatka (b. 1744), with whom he had eight children. This family was Swiss Amish or Mennonites. Descendants live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and elsewhere. John Kenege Sr., born Johanes Gnäge, Jr. in 1742, was the second son of Johanes Gnäge and Mary Holden.
