Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports and Resolutions of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, Vol. 3: Regular Session Commencing January 11, 1910 State of South Carolina, Executive Department, Office of Secretary of State, Columbia, S. C., January 1, 1910. To the Honorable the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina. Gentlemen: I have the honor to submit, in compliance with Statute law, my annual report as Secretary of State, showing the various transactions of this office for the fiscal year commencing January 1, 1909, and ending January 1, 1910. Numerous requests being received from various sources in and out of the State for lists of county and other officers and for charters issued, following the custom of my administration, I have divided this report into two parts for the convenience of mailing. Part I contains a list of charters issued, renewed and amended; increases and decreases of capital stock allowed; a full record of dissolution of chapters; papers filed by foreign corporations; a synopsis of rail road papers filed for record, and a list of all commissions issued to municipal, railroad and private companies. Part II contains a list of commissions issued to State, district, county and other officers; Notaries Public, Commissioners of Deeds; a list of bonds filed, which have been turned over to the State Treasurer as provided by law, and miscellaneous matter in general. I have attested, sealed and recorded all pardons, paroles, respite of sentences and commutations granted by the Governor, and a full register of all bonds and certificates of stock, showing the numbers and amounts thereof, and the names of parties by whom surrendered and to whom issued, have been kept, but they have been omitted from this report for the reason that they will appear in the report of the State Treasurer. All bonds of State and other officers, declarations, commissions, return of corporators, charters and other papers, required by law to be recorded in this office, have been duly recorded, the proper endorsement made on each original paper and every record has been fully and properly indexed. Book State Banking in Early America

Download or read book State Banking in Early America written by Howard Bodenhorn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-11-28 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Bodenhorn's State Banking in Early America studies the financial experimentation that took place in the United States between 1790 and 1860. Dr. Bodenhorn's book explores regional differences in banking structures, which bear indirectly in the conection between financial and economic development. If a single theme emerges, it is that the United States benefitted from its free banking philosophy in which state governments, rather than a centralized authority, created financial structures designed to serve specific, local needs. Thus decentralized federalism provided state legislatures with a great deal of flexibility in their individual approaches to economic and financial issues. The important lessons to be learned from Dr. Bodenhorn's historical account are that successful banking systems are flexible, predictable, and incentive-compatible; they meet the needs of the borrowers, depositors and shareholders, and they reduce downside risks to generally agreed upon levels. These lessons imply that we cannot, a priori, define an optimal, one-size-fits-all banking system. We need to know something about the formal and informal institutions underlying an economy and about the risk preferences of its citizenry. Historically, outsiders view Americans as experimenters and risk takers. Nowhere is this experimentation and risk taking more apparent than in early American banking policies.

Download or read book States at War Volume 6 written by Richard F. Miller and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many Civil War reference books exist, Civil War researchers have until now had no single compendium to consult on important details about the combatant states (and territories). This crucial reference work, the sixth in the States at War series, provides vital information on the organization, activities, economies, demographics, and laws of Civil War South Carolina. This volume also includes the Confederate States Chronology. Miller enlists multiple sources, including the statutes, Journals of Congress, departmental reports, general orders from Richmond and state legislatures, and others, to illustrate the rise and fall of the Confederacy. In chronological order, he presents the national laws intended to harness its manpower and resources for war, the harsh realities of foreign diplomacy, the blockade, and the costs of states’ rights governance, along with mounting dissent; the effects of massive debt financing, inflation, and loss of credit; and a growing raggedness within the ranks of its army. The chronology provides a factual framework for one of history’s greatest ironies: in the end, the war to preserve slavery could not be won while 35 percent of the population was enslaved.

Book Strategic Factors in Nineteenth Century American Economic History

Download or read book Strategic Factors in Nineteenth Century American Economic History written by Claudia Goldin and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering new research on strategic factors in the development of the nineteenth century American economy—labor, capital, and political structure—the contributors to this volume employ a methodology innovated by Robert W. Fogel, one of the leading pioneers of the "new economic history." Fogel's work is distinguished by the application of economic theory and large-scale quantitative evidence to long-standing historical questions. These sixteen essays reveal, by example, the continuing vitality of Fogel's approach. The authors use an astonishing variety of data, including genealogies, the U.S. federal population census manuscripts, manumission and probate records, firm accounts, farmers' account books, and slave narratives, to address collectively market integration and its impact on the lives of Americans. The evolution of markets in agricultural and manufacturing labor is considered first; that concerning capital and credit follows. The demography of free and slave populations is the subject of the third section, and the final group of papers examines the extra-market institutions of governments and unions.
