Within the fort area was a log house, that stood well down the south side, which was of ample dimensions. There were some smaller buildings in the enclosure, while the water-supply, drawn from a well, was under the shadows of the eastern wall. At this time there were but twenty-two men in the fort, fully one hah of whom were suffering from illness.1 Sergeant John Hawks, of Deerfield, was in command. A few days before, Surgeon Thomas Williams had been despatched to Deerfield for a supply of ammunition, and Rigaud's little "army" had invested Fort Massachusetts before they could return. Over the rough clearing bristling with the blackened stumps of the huge trees whose trunks had been hewn into the timbers for the fort walls the 1"Lord's day and Monday... the sickness was very distressing....
