Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of the History of Ireland: From the Earliest Period, to the Reign of George I The early period of Irish history may perhaps be con sidered more interesting to the curious antiquarian than to the practical politician. The records of Keating, however flattering to the pride of an Irishman, will be found but little calculated to add to that stock of useful information, which our modern history so abundantly afl'ords. The memory of his reader is oppressed by the labour of recol lection; and the efforts of the historian to establish the authenticity of Irish fame, and the superior claim of Irish genealogy, too frequently entangle the understanding of the reader in unprofitable researches, visionary inquiries. And idle conjectures. The present compendium takes a rapid view of those days of greatness, of which the Irish bards have sung with rapturous enthusiasm: it then passes to the second Henry of England, and carries the records of the principal and most leading events, down to the reign of George the First. This task, it is hoped, will be found to be performed with proper anxiety for the interest of truth, as well as the honour and welfare of our country. Download or read book The History of Ireland Vol 1 written by Thomas Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ireland, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Period of the Irish Annals, to the Present Time Most of the distinguished speakers in the house of commons delivered their sentiments at more or less length on this important subject, and all the arguments in favour of the petition or against it were fairly put forward; yet, after a very long debate, and an able summary of the question in conclu sion by Fox, the advocates of the catholics were defeated by nearly the same majority as in the house of lords. Only a hundred and twenty-four members voted with Mr. Fox, while three hundred and thirty-six votes were given against his motion. Thus was the question of catholic emancipation set at rest for the present, as far as the legislature was concerned with it. Download or read book History of Ireland Vol 1 written by Standish O'Grady and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Ireland, Vol. 1: The Heroic Period I had intended at first to let my book explain itself, but as I reflect on the unusualness of its form and character, I feel the advantages which would be derived from some introductory matter. If I appear sometimes to travel over ground covered by the text itself, this must be my excuse. It is a common-place that the true function of the historian is to give a clear and vivid picture of the past; but, although the principle is recognised in theory, it is practically set aside, and pure historical composition relegated to the novelist and romancer, whose audience, as they desire merely amusement, make no very stern demands on the veracity and historical faithfulness of the writer. In fact, the province of archaeology has so extended its frontiers, as to have swallowed up the dominion of pure history altogether. Nearly every work which one takes up affecting to treat of the past in a rigid and conscientious spirit, is merely archaeological. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ireland, Vol. 1 Dr. Joyce says To publish text, translation, and annotations of old Keating - whom I revere and love - would be a great work, enough to place all Irishmen, present and future, under deep obligations to you. A grand ambition, enough to make a man's whole life pleasant and healthy. I too can claim that I have always had a like deep veneration and affection for our good old author, and to do this work has been with me the desire and dream of half a lifetime: in fact, since I was first able to read the Irish language, and took part, now more than a quarter of a century ago, in the movement for its preservation. I even then hoped to have commenced this undertaking, but other matters, in themselves of minor interest, were more pressing needs for the time: now, however, the Irish Texts Society gives me the opportunity so long wished for; and from Dr. Hyde, the President, Miss Eleanor Hull, the Hon. Sec., my colleagues on the Committee, and other members and friends, I have received such encouragement and assistance, as give me hope that I may be able, under their auspices, to complete so great and useful a work.
