Book excerpt: The single most important factor for the success of a student in school is the teacher, yet many factors impact the teacher’s ability to do the job as effectively as possible. Data exists regarding the multiple influences that affect the teacher’s sense of self-efficacy, however, specific data regarding leadership behaviors is limited. Research shows that student achievement is affected by the teacher, therefore it is imperative to determine what leadership behaviors impact teacher efficacy the most. The purpose of this quantitative study was to explore the impact of principal behaviors on teacher efficacy. Also, the study sought to compare the derived results from elementary school data with that of middle school data to determine if a difference exists between principal behaviors and teacher efficacy at both levels. A multivariate multiple regression was used to analyze the findings. This method was used due to the multiple independent, as well as multiple dependent variables that exist within both measures; the Teacher Sense of Self Efficacy Scale Long Form and the Leadership Practices Inventory. The study found that there was no significant impact of principal behaviors on teacher efficacy for the participating school district. There was, however, a significant difference in the self-efficacy of elementary school and middle school teachers with regard to student engagement. While elementary teachers rated themselves relatively high in student engagement, middle school teachers rated themselves lower in their ability to engage students in learning. District leaders should consider professional development in building middle school efficacy in student engagement.

The purpose of this study was to better understand how principal leadership behaviors affect teacher collective efficacy beliefs. The study was designed around Goddard, Hoy, and Hoy's construct of teacher collective efficacy, which is grounded on Bandura's efficacy constructs. The sequential mixed-methods study was designed to examine the perceptions of teacher participants from one Texas Title I middle school regarding principal leadership behaviors. A case study approach was used to construct meaning from teachers' perceptions about the effects of principal behaviors on teachers' beliefs regarding the components of collective efficacy. The quantitative portion of the study (a survey) examined teacher perceptions of their collective efficacy beliefs regarding various facets of the school organization. The qualitative portion (focus group and individual interviews) centered on what teachers perceive to be the impact of principal leadership behaviors on their teacher collective efficacy. Findings from the quantitative portion of the study suggest that teachers perceive their levels of collective efficacy to be higher when reflecting on factors that are primarily connected to school, like learning, motivating students, and handling student discipline issues. Findings from the qualitative portion of the study suggest that when principals exhibit collaboration, empowerment, relationship building, and trust, teachers perceive the leader to be effective. The study was limited to one Title I middle school so an extension to the study which would include other middle or additional high schools is recommended.

Based on social learning and motivational theories concerning leadership and efficacy, the theories were significant in identifying characteristics of leadership styles, level of readiness, and the sense of efficacy for principals and teachers. The study utilizes a non-experimental quantitative design employing both a descriptive and inferential analysis. Data were acquired from principals and teachers in two urban school systems in Georgia through the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale, Principal Sense of Efficacy Scale, Leadership Styles Questionnaire and the Teacher's Perception of Principal Support Questionnaire. Of the four research questions posed in this body of research, research question one indicated no significant difference in principal self-efficacy by leadership style. The remaining research questions noted a significant correlation between teachers' self-efficacy and perceptions of principal support. A statistical significance suggested a difference between the sense of efficacy of principals and teachers as well as a difference in the sense of efficacy of teachers based upon years of experience.

Building principals are a key player in generating, fostering, and growing CTE in their team of teachers. However, principals do not know what leadership behaviors have the most impact on CTE. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative study was to determine what relationship exists between principals' empowering leadership behaviors and collective teacher efficacy. This study sought to answer three questions: To what extent do first-year teachers perceive that their building principals exhibit empowering leadership behaviors? To what extent do first-year teachers perceive that they and their colleagues exhibit collective teacher efficacy? What is the relationship between first-year teachers' perceptions of their principals' empowering leadership behaviors and their perceptions of they and their colleagues' collective teacher efficacy? Study participants completed two surveys: the Empowering Leadership Questionnaire (Arnold et al., 2000) and the Collective Teacher Beliefs Survey (Tschannen-Moran & Barr, 2004). Data collected from the Empowering Leadership Questionnaire indicates that the participants in this study perceive that their building principals exhibit empowering leadership behaviors "most of the time" and sometimes "always." Data collected from the Collective Teacher Beliefs Survey indicates that the participants in this study perceive that they and their colleagues can impact student instructional and behavioral outcomes "quite a bit." To explore the relationship between first-year teachers' perceptions of their principals' empowering leadership behaviors and they and their colleagues' collective teacher efficacy, a series of Spearman's rank-order correlations were conducted. All correlations calculated were positive and range from 0.176 (weak) to 0.506 (strong). Findings show that there is a strong relationship between the overall scores on the ELQ and CTBS with a Spearman's r value of 0.506. Consequently, the findings of this study have implications for school districts and universities, but especially for current and aspiring school leaders. This study's findings can help principals prioritize the many tasks and responsibilities they are charged with so that they can do what matters most when it comes to generating, fostering, and growing collective teacher efficacy in the team of teachers they lead

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to discover the principal instructional leadership behaviors differed in successful and nonsuccessful urban elementary schools. Six schools were selected and paired according to size, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and attendance to discover the salient leadership behavior differences between and among them. A descriptive survey research design was utilized to collect data through the Hallinger-Murphy Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS) which assessed frequency of leadership behaviors. Six (100%) of the principals and 95 (49%) teachers responded. The research questions were tested statistically using Analysis of Variance to decipher leadership differences between the pairs of schools and differences of perceived principal behaviors based on teachers' grade levels and teaching experience. The instructional leadership behaviors manifested by the principals in the selected schools were identified through the PIMRS and tested using the .05 confidence level as the measure of significance. The current literature reported that higher frequency of leadership behaviors, such as those identified in the PIMRS, could lead to academically successful schools. The results of this study went against the grain of the current literature since high scores on the PIMRS did not ensure successful schools and provided confoundment rather than clarification. The principals in the paired schools showed few differences in job behavior patterns, yet one school in each pair was academically successful; the other was not. The research questions stated: 1) There are significant differences between the instructional leadership behaviors demonstrated by the principals of schools with high student achievement when compared with the principals of schools with low student achievement; 2) student demographic characteristics (ethnicity, attendance of students, socioeconomic status) influence student success; and 3) there is a difference in teachers' perceptions of principals' instructional leadership behaviors based on their years of teaching experience and grade level taught. The first and third questions were rejected since the data in this study did not support the questions. The second question was not statistically tested due to a lack of difference in the student populations in the schools. Further study and testing of the Ballinger-Murphy Model is required in order to draw final conclusions on the relationship between principal instructional leadership behaviors and student achievement

Individual school data as well as aggregated data from 25 studied schools were analyzed in order to form overall conclusion of perceptions of leadership for the elementary schools within the system. -- The purpose of this quantitative survey study was to examine principal perceptions of their leadership behaviors and determine if they aligned with teacher perceptions of these same behaviors using the five practices of exemplary leadership of The Leadership Challenge. The researcher disaggregated the data to identify areas of strength and weakness and compared the perceptions to the teachers they lead. The researcher also disaggregated data to determine the relationship of perceptions based on gender and teacher experience level to determine if either of leadership behaviors affect teacher perceptions of principal leadership. -- Through collecting research surveys of principals and teachers, the quantitative data were analyzed to determine if there was an alignment between teacher perceptions of leadership behaviors and leaders’ self-perceived behaviors. -- Three main findings resulted from the study. First, there was not a significant statistical difference in teacher perceptions of principal practices using the five exemplary leadership behaviors based on years of experience. Second, a gender difference emerged such that female principals were more likely to “challenge the process” than male principals. In other words, female principals showed a greater willingness to take risks and search for new opportunities (at least according to their own self-report). Third, teacher ratings of principal leadership behaviors aligned well with the principals’ own ratings.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the relationship between high school principals' leadership style and teacher efficacy. A mixed method study was conducted using an online survey of current public high school teachers in southeastern Michigan. The quantitative portions of the survey consisted of the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale TES, short form (Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk-Hoy, 2001) and the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Avolio & Bass, 2004). Investigation of correlations, if any, were calculated by using Pearson's "r" to understand the aspects of a transformational leadership style that were correlated to high teacher self-efficacy. A factor analysis and reliability investigation indicated that the data generated with the chosen instruments was highly reliable for measuring principals' leadership style and teacher efficacy. Finally, in the qualitative part of the survey, study participants provided answers to an open-ended question about the single most negative factor impacting teacher self-efficacy in today's schools. All teachers' self-efficacy mean scores on a Likert-type scale of 1 to 5 on the Teachers' Sense of Efficacy Scale (TES), short form, ranged from 3.25 to 5, indicating relatively high to high sense of self-efficacy. There were no participants whose self-efficacy mean scores ranged from 1 and>3.25, indicating a relatively low to low self-efficacy rating. Weak to moderate positive correlations were found between teachers with relatively high to high self-efficacy ratings and principals who have transformational leadership styles, especially the characteristic of Intellectual Stimulation. Because all teachers rated their sense of self-efficacy to be relatively high to high, and with no data available to compare relatively low to low scores and principals' leadership style, the data regarding the existence of a relationship between the variables was inconclusive, and the null hypothesis was accepted. No significant relationship exists between high school principals' leadership styles and teacher self-efficacy. In the qualitative portion of the survey instrument, teachers responded to an open-ended question about negative impacts on their sense of efficacy in schools. Comments were analyzed and grouped into themes that included governmental mandates, regulations, and budget cuts; quality of school administration; and parent and community perceptions of education. In general, teachers want to feel valued by parents, the community and the public; they look to their principals for support, guidance, consistency, and acknowledgement. Finally, the mandates and legislative changes that have taken place in Michigan have had a negative impact on teachers' self-efficacy. These responses provided greater understanding of the opinions of the teacher participants in this study. The results of this study have implications for leadership at the district and building level. Building principals who have a transformational leadership style are more likely to foster teachers with high self-efficacy ratings; this, in turn, creates an environment for higher levels of student achievement. It is important that district-level leaders hire transformational leaders and encourage such approaches in existing principals through focused professional development. This study's results have implications for principal preparation programs, encouraging courses that support the development of transformational leadership skills and recognizing the research-based connection to leadership style and high teacher self-efficacy.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study addressed the idea that a middle school principal could possibly impact teacher effectiveness in the classroom through the relationship of the teacher- perceived leadership style of the principal to teacher job satisfaction and efficacy. The sample consisted of 142 certified teachers from 8 public middle schools in an East Tennessee school district. Teachers completed the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, (Bass & Avolio, 2004) and the Job Satisfaction Survey, (Spector, 1994). Findings from this study suggest that the middle school teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership did not have a statistically significant relationship to teacher job satisfaction. A new insight from this study suggests that principals should find ways to lead beyond teacher perceptions to address the needs of teachers in order to promote and encourage higher levels of teacher job satisfaction. Furthermore, findings from this study suggest that the middle school teachers' perceptions of their principal's leadership style had a statistically significant relationship to teacher efficacy. Findings from the exploratory question at the end of the surveys further validated this study by indicating teachers perceived their need for principal leadership to help them become more effective in the classroom by incorporating elements of both transformational and transactional leadership. This research may assist in developing leadership style training for principals desiring to indirectly influence academic achievement by influencing teacher job satisfaction and efficacy within their schools.

Book excerpt: Since a building principal is the most important employee in a school building with regards to setting educational standards and creating culture, it is important for this leader to consider leadership style and to recognize the importance of teachers' perceptions on effectiveness. The purpose of this ex post facto study was to explore the relationship between the leadership style of building principals and perceived effectiveness of those leaders. Subtopics of this study considered the relationship that gender, leadership style, and educational level of the school building (elementary vs. secondary) have on perceived effectiveness of leaders. Data were collected via Bass & Avolio's web-based survey entitled the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) from a sampling of elementary and secondary building principals in Nassau and Suffolk County districts and at least five faculty members from each principal's school. In total, 38 building principals and 236 teachers participated in the study. Descriptive statistics were compiled on the demographic data obtained, and two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) tests and an Independent Samples t-test were run using SPSS to understand if there was any significant relationship between gender, type of school and leadership styles or between leadership style, gender, type of school and the perceived effectiveness of the building principal. Further, this study explored if there was a statistically significant difference between the perceptions about leadership style and effectiveness between principal participants and teacher raters. Results of the study revealed non-significant associations for all research questions; however, statistically significant simple main effects found that at the elementary level, female principals were considered significantly more transformational than male principals. Findings also indicated that teachers on both educational levels perceived their male principals to exhibit more laissez-faire leadership behaviors than female principals, and there was a statistically significant difference in effectiveness scores between elementary and secondary school levels for male principals with elementary school teachers rating their male principals as more effective. Through these findings, certain strategies can be ascertained to help current leaders reflect on practice, to better prepare future leaders, and to contribute to the discourse about gender, school type, and leadership in education.

Book excerpt: This study examined the impact of principal leadership characteristics and behaviors on teacher's perceptions of self and collective efficacy at three career stages. Forty-six teachers from six school buildings within a single southeastern Pennsylvania school district participated in the study. Multiple data collection instruments were utilized to provide qualitative data on teacher perceptions of personal and collective efficacy relative to their perceptions of their principal's leadership and their career stage. The researcher found that schools in which teachers had positive perceptions of their principal also exhibited stronger collective efficacy perceptions. The research also revealed that teachers' personal efficacy perceptions were sometimes situational and impacted directly through feedback from their principals and indirectly through their principals' leadership behaviors.

Book excerpt: This mixed methods study analyzed the perceptions of teachers and principals regarding the leadership behaviors displayed by the principal that contributed to exemplary school status. Qualitatively, subjects provided perceptions of leadership behaviors through interview responses and site visits. Teachers' (N=74) and principals' (N=5) perceptions indicated agreement between the behaviors that impacted exemplary school status. Quantitatively, subjects provided perception data regarding the leadership behaviors displayed by the principal that contributed to exemplary school status through survey data. Teachers and principals attributed the leadership behaviors identified in the Factors: Organizational Direction, Interactive Processes, Student Relations, Instructional Improvement and Curriculum Improvement as strengths that were critically important in achieving exemplary middle school academic status. Overall, perception data indicated that middle schools that are achieving exemplary academic performance are led by administrators who hold the self-perception that they are highly effective and are also perceived as highly effective by their faculty and staff members.

The researcher used the "Audit of Principal Effectiveness" survey to collect data. The researcher also used Hierarchical Linear Modeling as the quantitative analysis. Significant teacher-level variables were teacher age, years the teacher worked for current principal, and teacher gender. Significant school-level variables were principal gender, principal teaching experience, and percentage of low-income students scoring proficient in mathematics. Principals should understand how teacher- and school-level variables affect the principals' perceived leadership behaviors. This study has implications for university personnel, school district personnel, school principals, and hiring committees.
