The gold standard in measuring vertical jump height is the measurement of the vertical centre of mass (COM) displacement from three-dimensional (3D) video analysis. Vertical jump height is ultimately affected by takeoff COM velocity, as greater takeoff velocity results in greater jump height. The current study explored the use of takeoff versus maximum COM velocity by examining the relationships and differences between 3D video analysis and 3D force platform analysis when predicting vertical COM displacement. Use of the Vertec, and correction of takeoff COM velocity using takeoff posiion, was explored through methods proposed by Aragon-Vargas (2000) and Moir (2008)."--from abstract.

Book excerpt: The vertical jump is an essential skill contributing to the enhancement of athletic performance in sports that require concise, ballistic motions including basketball, volleyball, football, diving, and track-and-field. The objective of the present study was to estimate the concurrent validity of a new vertical jump height device, the Vertical Jump Mat (VJM), using the Vertec as a criterion measure. Twenty regularly active undergraduate students from the St. Mary's University campus volunteered for the study. Measurements of vertical jump height using VJM were compared with measurements of vertical jump height using the Vertec as a reference standard. There was a significant correlation between vertical jump height scores measured with the VJM and the Vertec, indicating that the VJM is a valid measure of vertical jump height. This simple, portable field instrument is particularly suited to assess athletic improvement in response to a specific training program.

The subjects consisted of the 14 non-injured players age (x age= 19.9 ± 1.4yr, x height = 185.4 ± 4.9cm, x mass = 78.5 + 5.4kg) on the Springfield College Men's Volleyball Team. All subjects took part in their regular two-hour in season volleyball training session 5-6 times per week for 8 weeks. The subjects were randomly assigned into control and experimental groups. The control group participated only in volleyball practice while the experimental group participated in a plyometric training program twice per week following the regular volleyball training sessions. The plyometric program consisted of depth jumps, box drills, high knee bounding drills and repetitive vertical jumps. Vertical jump height was measured, using the Vertec, pre- and post-training. It is often compared with the hand is tactile grasping organ, whereas the functions of the foot are support and locomotion. The arches of the foot are the longitudinal and the transverse, on the medial side of the foot, a longitudinal arch is formed by the calcareous, talus, navicular, cuneiforms, and the first three metatarsal. On the lateral side of the foot, a longitudinal arch is formed by the calcaneus, cuboid and the lateral two metatarsals. The transverse or metatarsal arch is formed by the navicular, cuneiforms, and cuboids together with five metatarsals. These bony arches, which are the result of the intrinsic mechanical arrangement of the bones, are supported by ligaments. During movement, they receive additional support from muscles, chiefly from those that invert and Evert the foot. The 26 bones composing the skeleton of the foot are primarily structured for strong, flexible, co-ordinate movement. Architecturally the foot forms an anterior metatarsal arch, an outer longitudinal arch and the high inner longitudinal arch on its medial aspect. The main function of the arch is to absorb the shock of eight. Bearing and to allow space for planter muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Body weight is conducted to the foot via the leg bone of the through the supporting bone the talus. A mortise is formed by the mall oil of the fibula and the talus below the talus is the calcimines. The foot makes surface contact with the calcaneus and the metatarsal heads, an intricate system of planter muscles and elastic and arched of the foot. Additional support is afforded by a suspension of muscles stemming from the leg and ending with in the longitudinal arch, Dorsiflexion together with planter ankle flexion, is permitted at the talotibial, together, with planter ankle flexion, is permitted at the taloctibial articulation, whereas inversion and version of the foot take place at the talocalcaneal and intertarsal joints.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the value of vertical jump testing as a surrogate power performance measure in American football, as well as to investigate the use of vertical jump as a method to evaluate the training status of football athletes during their competitive season. In this study, 20 male football athletes participated in three trials in which their vertical jump and body mass were recorded. The independent variables were the body mass of the athletes and the time during the competitive training period. The dependent variable was the vertical jump height of the participants. Vertical jump was collected using a vertical jump contact mat and body mass was collected using a digital scale. It was hypothesized that athletes would maintain or improve their vertical jump height over the course of the competitive season, that athletes in the skill group (wide receivers and defensive backs) will jump the highest, followed by athletes in the mid-skill group (linebackers, tight ends, quarterbacks, and tailbacks), with athletes in the big skill group (offensive and defensive linemen) jumping the shortest distance, and that Division 3 participants will perform comparably in the relative vertical jump (within 5%) to Division 1 athletes who participated in the vertical jump test at the 2018 NFL Draft Combine and were subsequently drafted by NFL teams. Data concluded that (1) overtraining may have been present in two of the three position groups, (2) skill athletes perform better on average in the vertical jump test than mid-skill and big skill athletes, (3) mid-skill athletes jump higher on average than big skill athletes, and (4) there is a substantial difference between Division 1 and Division 3 football athletes.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the differences between 2 sets of ballistic stretching and 2 sets of a dynamic stretching routine on vertical jump performance. The intraclass reliability coefficients for maximum jump height, force, and power were also assessed using the Kistler Quattro Jump ® force plate. Methods. Ten healthy male college students, ages 22 to 34 years, volunteered to participate in this study. All subjects completed three individual testing sessions on three non-consecutive days. On each day the subjects completed one of three treatments (no stretch, ballistic stretch, and dynamic stretch). A paired samples t-test was used to test the effects of ballistic and dynamic stretching, respectively, on jumping height, force, and power performance scores. Hoyt's analysis of variance model, (MSs-MSi)/MSs, was used to estimate the reliability coefficients on jumping performance scores across three different trials. Results. A paired samples t-test documented that there were no statistical differences in jumping height, force, or power between no stretch and ballistic stretch, and between no stretch and dynamic stretch. The intraclass reliability coefficients were >.99 for jumping height, >0.94 for jumping force, and >.99 for jumping power. Conclusion. Both ballistic and dynamic stretching showed nonsignificant effects on vertical jumping performance in college male students, but the reliability coefficients were very high to measure jumping height, force, and power using the Kistler Quattro Jump ® force plate.

Book excerpt: Horizontal Jumping is a well studied fundamental motor skill with established developmental sequences. Surprisingly, comparatively little work has been completed concerning vertical jumping despite its use in many sport and recreational activities. The purpose of this study was to determine age related differences in vertical jump coordination and performance through the examination of kinematic variables. Twenty-eight participants in three different age groups (9 children age 4-6 yrs, 9 adolescents age 12-14 yrs, and 10 adults age 18-25 yrs) performed 5 maximum vertical jumps with countermovement. Three-dimensional data were collected with a Peak Motus Motion Analysis System. Dependent measures were angular displacement of hip, knee, and ankle joint at low point of crouch, time to peak velocity of joints and segments relative to take-off, peak displacement and time to peak displacement of joints and segments relative to take-off, timing between segments and joint angles from crouch to take-off, time from standing to crouch position of counter movement, time from crouch position to take-off, and height jumped. Segmental and joint data were analyzed across age with oneway MANOVA. Time to crouch, time to take off, and height jumped were analyzed with separate oneway ANOVA. Analyses indicated both qualitative and quantitative differences in dependent measures across age groups. Specifically, the knee and ankle joints of adults and adolescents reached peak velocity after take-off, whereas, only the ankle joint of children reached peak velocity after take-off. Also, there was greater height jumped, greater displacement of the hip joint, and greater time to take off with an increase in age. Results are discussed relative to implications for the development of control and coordination for the vertical jump.
