Book A Profile of UC Davis Student Organization Leaders and Their Academic Achievement

Download or read book A Profile of UC Davis Student Organization Leaders and Their Academic Achievement written by Paul Vincent Cody and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, I examine the experience of student organization leaders at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), exploring 1) who becomes a campus leader; 2) when and for how long; and 3) the persistence and performance trajectories of these student leaders. My findings reveal significant differences in the background characteristics of officers and nonofficers. On average, student organization officers enter college with higher levels of academic performance, as measured by high school grades and test scores. First-generation students are less represented among student organization officers and women are overrepresented when compared to the campus population. Statistically significant differences of varying levels were found for African American, Asian, Chicano Latino and International students. In examining service type, no distinct pattern for involvement was discovered. Students found opportunities as officers throughout their four years at UC Davis, with most activity in the third and fourth year. Slightly more than 80 percent of student organization officers served between one and two years. The investigation of performance patterns and persistence rates indicate that student organization officers outperform non-officers. Controlling for academic performance indicators and other background characteristics, student organizations officers, on average, earn grade point averages that are higher than non-officers. Results also reveal that longer service as an officer is associated with lower fourth-year grade point average, a statistically significant difference, but substantively trivial in magnitude. Students that served as an officer had higher retention rates, with officers at 85.23 percent versus non-officers at 69.18 percent. On all subgroups examined (race/ethnicity, gender and background characteristics) officers had higher retention rates when compared to non-officers. This study corroborates with, and builds on, prior research to provide empirical evidence on the positive relationship between student leadership and academic success.

It's the concept that will set student leaders free. Stop focusing on those who check out or cause problems, and start focusing on those "middle third members" who hate drama, care for your organization, and prefer to play a supporting role. Book Relationship Between College Student Organization Leadership Experience and Post college Leadership Activity

Download or read book Relationship Between College Student Organization Leadership Experience and Post college Leadership Activity written by Walter B. Sommers and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between college student organization leadership experience and postcollege leadership activity. A questionnaire was employed to gather data to determine Ii there were differences by gender, academic major, and last year of attendance at OSU among former student leaders In: postcollegiate leadership activity, motivation for participation, perception of leadership skills learned, leadership skills to be emphasized, and perception of the value of the collegiate leadership experience. The content and structure of the questionnaire were developed through a study of related literature and research which provided data and formats from similar surveys. One-way analysis of variance and chi-square tests were used to determine whether there were differences among the respondents based on enrollment In a particular academic college. Questions about membership and leadership In college student organizations, membership and leadership roles In post-college organizations, and contribution to and emphasis on skill development were analyzed using the ANOVA. Questions about motivation for participating in college student and post-college organizations were tested using repeated measures ANOVAs with the Newinan-Keuls Multiple range test, with simultaneous adjustment for gender, academic college and last year of attendance. Post-college leadership scores were compared with the last year of attendance using a Pearson product-moment correlation. A multiple regression was performed to test post-college leadership activity against selected collegiate variables. Questions regarding involvement in college student organizations, leadership skill development, and political activity were analyzed using chi-square. The last year of attendance for each respondent was measured in frequency distributions and plotted for each question. Correlation analysis was conducted with last year of attendance and post-college leadership activity. Based on the results of the study, the factors that have the greatest influence on post-college leadership activities were the number of college leadership activities, the involvement level, and the level of degree attained. No significant differences existed between men and women or among academic colleges with regard to the frequency of postcollege activities. This study provided evidence that there is a relationship between college student organization leadership experience and post-college leadership activity.

Book Student Organization Leadership Aspirations of First Generation Students Enrolled in a College Based First Semester University Academic Success Program

Download or read book Student Organization Leadership Aspirations of First Generation Students Enrolled in a College Based First Semester University Academic Success Program written by David J. Wentling and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate student organization leadership aspirations of college students currently enrolled in a college-based first semester academic success program and the relationship with the student's self-awareness leadership behavior. The study was structured with two research designs; phenomenological and quantitative. Five purposively selected students were interviewed using the semi-structured format. The methodology used for the quantitative study data was collected from two groups, academic success program participant (n=29) and academic success program non-participant (n=52) using an instrument comprised of a two part questionnaire investigating the students' selection and enrollment with the academic success program and awareness of personal leadership behaviors with the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire-Ideal Self (LBDQ). A correlation analysis between participation, student organization leadership aspirations, knowledge and interest and students' personal leadership behavior was done. The phenomenological study findings found that students did not develop student organization leadership aspirations through their participation in the academic success program. Each student's priority was their academic achievement over organization participation. The quantitative study found that students who participated in the academic success program had higher aspirations than non-participants. There was not a statistically significant difference for participants versus non participants and their scores for each scale of the LBDQ. A leadership component should be implemented in the academic success program curriculum. This would allow students to maintain the priority of their academic performance while also developing leadership awareness and skills.
