Book The Productivity Differential Between the Canadian and U S Manufacturing Sectors

Download or read book The Productivity Differential Between the Canadian and U S Manufacturing Sectors written by John Russel Baldwin and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This paper examines differences in output per worker in the manufacturing sectors of Canada and the United States in 1929 and the extent to which it arises from efficiency differences. It makes corrections for differences in capital and materials intensity per worker in order to derive a measure of total factor efficiency of Canada relative to the United States, using detailed industry data. It finds that while output per worker in Canada was only about 75% of the United States productivity level, the total factor productivity measure of Canada was about the same as the United States level--that is, there was very little difference in technical efficiency in the two countries. Canada's lower output per worker was the result of the use of less capital and materials per worker than the United States."--Document.

Book Canada s Productivity Performance

Download or read book Canada s Productivity Performance written by Ponugoti Someshwar Rao and published by Canada Communications Group. This book was released on 1992 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study discuses issues and problems associated with international productivity and real income comparisons. It reviews the trends in Canada's productivity and the trends in Canada's labour productivity and real income performance, relative to other G-7 countries with special reference to the United States. It also outlines the theoretical underpinnings of an econometric model to explain productivity growth and gives a brief summary of regression results for Canada, the United States, Japan, and West Germany. It analyzes the causes of the slowdown in Canadian productivity since 1973 using the estimated equations. In addition, it examines the reasons for Canada's poor manufacturing productivity performance relative to that of the major economies and summarizes the findings of the study.

Book Theory and Policy of International Competitiveness

Download or read book Theory and Policy of International Competitiveness written by Fidelis Ezeala-Harrison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-04-30 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a country competes in the world is the crucial factor in determining that country's ability to benefit from international trade in today's global economy. This book offers a complete and proper understanding of the meaning of international competitiveness, analyzes the implications it holds for an economy's progress, examines how it may be pursued and sustained at both the sectoral level (firms and industries) and the national level (strategic objectives). The author offers pertinent policy guidelines and prescriptions for how a nation can achieve and maintain international competitiveness in order to sustain the long-term prosperity of its industries, and hence the overall pace of economic growth. The book is arranged into three parts. Part I discusses and defines the theories of international competitiveness. Part II deals with policy issues, specifically the policy analysis of structural reforms for promoting a country's ability to compete, the impact of globalization and the role of Communication and Information Technology (CIT), strategic trade policies, and environmental issues. Part III analyzes the strategies used to pursue competitiveness. The book will be useful for researchers, students, and teachers of business and economics as well as policy makers, business practitioners, and international and governmental agencies.

Book New Developments in Productivity Analysis

Download or read book New Developments in Productivity Analysis written by Charles R. Hulten and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-11-01 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The productivity slowdown of the 1970s and 1980s and the resumption of productivity growth in the 1990s have provoked controversy among policymakers and researchers. Economists have been forced to reexamine fundamental questions of measurement technique. Some researchers argue that econometric approaches to productivity measurement usefully address shortcomings of the dominant index number techniques while others maintain that current productivity statistics underreport damage to the environment. In this book, the contributors propose innovative approaches to these issues. The result is a state-of-the-art exposition of contemporary productivity analysis. Charles R. Hulten is professor of economics at the University of Maryland. He has been a senior research associate at the Urban Institute and is chair of the Conference on Research in Income and Wealth of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Michael Harper is chief of the Division of Productivity Research at the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Edwin R. Dean, formerly associate commissioner for Productivity and Technology at the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is adjunct professor of economics at The George Washington University.

Book Applied Production Analysis

Download or read book Applied Production Analysis written by Robert G. Chambers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-07-29 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a modern treatment of production economics from a dual perspective, with special emphasis on recent developments. Results that were scattered throughout professional journals and monographs are now gathered into an integrated approach using a common notation. The book prepares the reader to apply the tools of the dual approach to real world problems and data sets. Particular care has been devoted to choosing topics for discussion that achieve this goal. Throughout the book there are worked examples and exercises, which are geared toward developing the reader's facility in using modern developments in production economics. Separate chapters are devoted to production, cost, and profit functions. Other topics include flexible functional forms, aggregation across inputs and outputs using the theory of separable structures, aggregation over economic optimizing firms, the representation of multioutput technologies, and the analysis and measurement of technical change from both a primal and a dual perspective.
