These invasive species can create substantial problems for raw water users such as water treatment facilities and power plants, and they can have other negative impacts by altering aquatic environments. Book excerpt: The zebra mussel is an invasive bivalve that was first confirmed in Kansas in 2003, and has decreased zooplankton abundance and altered the aquatic community in other areas where it has invaded. However, little is known about its effects on the aquatic communities of warm-water Great Plains reservoirs. We analyzed zooplankton, benthic macroinvertebrate, and juvenile and small-bodied fish abundance in the littoral zone of an Eastern Kansas reservoir with an established zebra mussel population (El Dorado Reservoir) and a control reservoir without zebra mussels (Melvern Reservoir) for two years pre-zebra mussel invasion (2001-2002) and two years post-invasion (2008-2009). We found no difference in littoral zooplankton abundance between reservoirs across time, but abundance of some macroinvertebrate taxa increased, and abundance of juvenile Lepomis spp. and red shiners decreased in the littoral zone of El Dorado Reservoir in August of the post-zebra mussel invasion period in comparison to the control reservoir. We also analyzed abundance and condition of six adult reservoir fishes in El Dorado Reservoir and three control reservoirs in Eastern Kansas for ten years pre-zebra mussel invasion (1993-2002) and five years post-invasion (2004-2008). Adult white crappie abundance remained constant in El Dorado Reservoir but decreased in the control reservoirs during the post-zebra mussel invasion period, and condition of adult bluegill, white bass, and white crappie decreased in El Dorado Reservoir in the post-zebra mussel invasion period compared to the control reservoirs. Our findings suggest that zebra mussel invasion in El Dorado Reservoir may have affected some benthic macroinvertebrates, juvenile and small-bodied fishes, and adult fishes. We did not find evidence that zebra mussels have had substantial effects on the zooplankton community of El Dorado Reservoir. However, July-August zebra mussel veliger densities in El Dorado Reservoir averaged less than 12 veligers/L in four of the six post-zebra mussel invasion years. Additional research and long-term monitoring of zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and fishes will be necessary to determine the full effects of zebra mussels on the aquatic communities of warm-water reservoirs throughout North America.

Book excerpt: Zebra mussel feeding was restricted by reduced delivery of algae into the less-turbulent "concentration boundary layer" and by competition within the mussel colony for algae. I measured the relative magnitude of algal consumption by zooplankton in situ and by mussels in the lab relative to lake algal abundance and photosynthesis. Although seasonal phytoplankton successional patterns typical of north temperate lakes without zebra mussels have persisted after mussels became established in western Lake Erie, total phytoplankton biomasses were lower and Cyanobacteria rarer. However, changes in nutrient concentrations can account for shifts in algal species composition. Based on a comparison of primary productivity and algal standing crop phytoplankton were capable of reproducting once or twice a day. Grazing by free swimming, large-bodied crustacean zooplankton was sufficient to explain seasonal changes in algal abundance without considering zebra mussel impact at all. Even when seasonally abundant (maximum of 750 L-1 during August 1993), zebra mussel veligers grazed pelagic algae at an insignificant rate (generally 1- 3% with a maximum of 7.1%) relative to other zooplankton. Thus, potentially only the benthic adult zebra mussel stage with its larger biomass could be significantly impacting phytoplankton. Grazing by sedentary adult zebra mussels present in high densities was insufficient to overwhelm phytoplankton production.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The depth of the wind-mixed layer and diel thermoclines often determine the light climate of individual plankters, which, due to the random nature of turbulence can be different for plankters at the same depth. Time scales associated with photoresponse are often similar to various mixing time scales, on time scales of minutes to hours. I develop a method to estimate primary productivity, considering the effects of vertical turbulent mixing. The indirect temperature gradient microstructure method was used for calculating energy dissipation, from which I obtain Lagrangian diffusivity estimates. I then apply literature values of photosynthetic parameters (the slope and shape of the photosynthesis-irradiance curve) and a random walk simulation, using the diffusivity estimates, to predict the light climate of the phytoplankton and thus the primary productivity. I find that at some points in time and space, notably in early morning convective mixing, that photosynthesis may be underestimated by as much as 45%. However, diel thermocline formation reduces this effect, trapping algae near the surface and causing near surface declines in production. Separated from the source of mixing, the surface wind-shear, the lower water column primary production is still increased by more than 15% relative to the static model.

I hypothesized that vegetated waterways, i.e. wetland streams, would hinder downstream dispersal of zebra mussels in connected inland lake systems. To test this hypothesis, veliger (larva) abundance, recruitment, and adult mussels were surveyed in four lake-wetland systems in southeastern Michigan, USA from May through August 2006. Sampling was conducted downstream of the zebra mussel invaded lakes, beginning at the upstream edge of aquatic vegetation and continuing downstream through the wetland streams. Results showed that veliger abundance decreased rapidly in vegetated waterways compared to their previously reported rates of decrease in non-vegetated streams. Veligers were rarely found more than 1 km downstream from where vegetation began. Newly recruited individuals and adults were extremely rare beyond open water in the study systems. These results suggest that densely vegetated aquatic ecosystems limit the dispersal of zebra mussels downstream from invaded sources. Natural, remediated and constructed wetlands may therefore serve as a protective barrier to help prevent the spread of zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species to other lakes and ecosystems.

Book excerpt: Zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) are an invasive species known to detrimentally affect native unionid mussels, a highly imperiled group of organisms. Zebra mussels infest (directly attach to) the shells of unionid mussels and compete with them for food as both unionid and zebra mussels are filter feeders. Previous studies, mostly from the northeastern US, have shown that both competition for food (indirect interaction) and zebra mussel infestation (direct interaction) can affect the body condition of unionid mussels. However, no study has examined this in Central Texas, the southern edge of zebra mussel distribution nor compared the impact of zebra mussel presence (in the same system as unionid mussels) and infestation (direct attachment to unionid mussel shells) on glycogen storage under controlled conditions. Hence, the objectives of this study were to 1) examine the impact of infestation versus presence of zebra mussels with experiments in the laboratory and 2) collect data on glycogen concentrations of unionid mussels at different field sites with and without zebra mussels. In the experiment, tissue samples were collected after 30 days from treatment tanks where 1) Threeridge (Amblema plicata) were artificially infested with zebra mussels, 2) zebra mussels were present with their biomass being comparable with the first treatment (44 ± 14 g wet biomass), but shells of A. plicata were not infested, and 3) control tanks where zebra mussels were absent. Tissue samples from A. plicata were collected from 20 individuals at each of the 10 field sites. Results from the experiments showed zebra mussel presence and infestation reduced glycogen 38% and 66% respectively. Results from the field supported these findings. Variation in glycogen concentrations of mussels collected in the field was best explained by chlorophyll-a concentrations (coarse measure of food resource) and total number zebra mussels. A larger percentage of infested mussels were burrowed in the lab experiment compared to control mussels, potentially to avoid unfavorable conditions created by both the presence and infestation of zebra mussels. Reduction of glycogen stores by zebra mussels can reduce short- and long-term fitness of unionid mussels which needs to be considered when creating and implementing management practices.
