At poor levels, it is associated with such health outcomes as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Physical fitness testing in American youth was established on a large scale in the 1950s with an early focus on performance-related fitness that gradually gave way to an emphasis on health-related fitness. Using appropriately selected measures to collected fitness data in youth will advance our understanding of how fitness among youth translates into better health. In Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth, the IOM assesses the relationship between youth fitness test items and health outcomes, recommends the best fitness test items, provides guidance for interpreting fitness scores, and provides an agenda for needed research. The report concludes that selected cardiorespiratory endurance, musculoskeletal fitness, and body composition measures should be in fitness surveys and in schools. Collecting fitness data nationally and in schools helps with setting and achieving fitness goals and priorities for public health at an individual and national level.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the Bronco Fitness Circuit (BFC) on the following fitness components in collegiate soccer players: muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, and body composition. The subjects were 22 members of the SUNY- Delhi varsity soccer team between the ages of 17 and 22, divided equally into experimental and control groups. The BFC was an aerobic circuit weight training (ACWT) program consisting of 12 strength stations alternating with 12 aerobic stations (bicycle ergometers). The experimental group completed two laps through the circuit with a total training time of 37 minutes, a minimum of three times per week for 11 weeks. Subjects trained for 30 seconds at each work station, and 10 seconds were allowed to change stations. Training weights were set at 50% 1RM for the strength stations for the first half of the study, and were increased to 60% 1RM at the midpoint. Analysis of variance was utilized to determine significant differences between groups before and after the training period. The BFC was most specific in causing significant improvements in muscular endurance (14%) and muscular strength (9%) when compared to pre-training values. A significant improvement (7%) for V02 max was elicited, but was probably caused by a combination of training for soccer and the BFC program. There were no significant changes in the lean-to-fat-ratio for either group. Reported values were similar to previous circuit training studies. It was concluded that to more clearly recognize the effects of the BFC on the fitness components of soccer players, it would be necessary to implement an investigation in the off-season to eliminate the effects of soccer practice and games on the fitness components of the athletes"--Document.
