Book The Effects of Mental Practice on Physical Performance

Download or read book The Effects of Mental Practice on Physical Performance written by Elisabeth Mary Robertson and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Competing at one's best requires not only physical training, but mental training as well. Several theories have been developed to explain the effects of mental practice on physical performance. Many studies have been conducted, revealing types of imagery, factors in imagery, what imagery is used for and how to use it. This study was conducted using four groups of college students in shooting free throws with a basketball: one group practiced physically, one mentally, one mentally and physically, and one group did nothing (control group). The results showed that physical practice helped, as expected, but also that mental practice did not help. It is concluded that those who practiced mentally did not have their imagery ability assessed, nor were they instructed on how to practice mentally. Therefore, the mental practice did not improve their skills.
