Book A Comparison of Student Achievement and Behavior in Single Sex and Mixed Sex Classroom in a Rural Georgia Middle School

Download or read book A Comparison of Student Achievement and Behavior in Single Sex and Mixed Sex Classroom in a Rural Georgia Middle School written by Hannah Walker Murray and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: In an attempt to improve its already excellent standardized test scores by addressing the needs of struggling students, Cardinal Forest Middle School implemented single-sex education on a limited scope and on a trial basis. Using the theoretical framework of Schwab’s four commonplaces, the academic and behavioral records of single-sex educated and co-educated students from the year prior to and year of single-sex team teaching were compared. An analysis of covariance was utilized to analyze the academic and behavioral data and to determine if there was a statistically significant difference in the single-sex classroom achievement scores versus the coeducational classroom achievement scores. These analyses showed no statistically significant differences between the groups on the achievement measures during the years of single sex education. In addition, behavioral records were analyzed to show the difference between the single-sex students and coeducational students in the sixth grade and seventh grade. The results showed the discipline referral percentage increased for the single-sex male, but the discipline referral percentage decreased for the coeducational males, single-sex females, and coeducational females. Qualitative data gathered from interviewing three of the four teachers involved in the teaching of the single-sex classes showed the teachers’ perspectives as being favorable to the single-sex classroom and to the belief that the students in the single-sex classrooms benefitted not only academically but socially as well.

Book Girls Single Sex Schools and Postfeminist Fantasies

Download or read book Girls Single Sex Schools and Postfeminist Fantasies written by Stephanie D. McCall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together feminist theory, girlhood studies, and curriculum theory, this book contributes an in-depth critical analysis of curriculum in single-gender schooling for girls in postfeminist landscapes of "unlimited choices" and resurgences of proper girlhood. The arguments challenge the mainstream assumptions and promotions about the guarantees of female success via small school supports, tailored curricula, protection, school choice and class advantage. Single-gender schools are not homogenous; they have different histories, student populations, finances and organization. Recognizing this diversity, Girls, Single-sex Schools, and Postfeminist Fantasies draws on rich data collected in two US secondary schools over a two-year period to identify and explore the ambiguities of success in single-sex schools for girls. Rich classroom observations and interviews with teachers and students reveal the resounding message delivered to girls - that they can "have it all" by going to college. By exploring students’ imaginings, hopes, and doubts around college, the text illustrates how this catalyzes girls’ critiques of their futures and of the schooled storylines of female success. While teachers might trumpet college, career, and limitless horizons, girls seek to understand their social positions and try to make sense of family, passions, and future happiness. This book will be of great interest to graduate and postgraduate students, academics, researchers, libraries in secondary education, girlhood studies, sociology of education, gender and sexuality in education, single-sex schooling, and feminist theory.

Book Debating Single sex Education

Download or read book Debating Single sex Education written by Frances R. Spielhagen and published by R & L Education. This book was released on 2008 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educators agree that boys and girls learn differently, but do they learn better in single-sex classes? Single-sex education has become a 'hot topic' among educators striving to address achievement declines, especially in the middle school years. Since the United States Department of Education confirmed the legality of single-sex classes in public schools in 2006, the number of single-sex classes and schools has increased dramatically and the options continue to grow in popularity. Debating Single-Sex Education offers a timely and detailed summary of the issues surrounding single-sex education. Eight veteran educators provide research-based findings on single-sex classes in the United States and Africa. This book presents a brief historical summary of single-sex classes in the United States. Other features include recent qualitative case studies, interviews with students, and statistical evidence of the effects of single-sex classes on student achievement. The final chapter synthesizes the common findings among these studies and the implications for practice in schools.

Book Handbook for Achieving Gender Equity Through Education

Download or read book Handbook for Achieving Gender Equity Through Education written by Susan S. Klein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, the Handbook for Achieving Gender Equity Through Education quickly established itself as the essential reference work concerning gender equity in education. This new, expanded edition provides a 20-year retrospective of the field, one that has the great advantage of documenting U.S. national data on the gains and losses in the efforts to advance gender equality through policies such as Title IX, the landmark federal law prohibiting sex discrimination in education, equity programs and research. Key features include: Expertise – Like its predecessor, over 200 expert authors and reviewers provide accurate, consensus, research-based information on the nature of gender equity challenges and what is needed to meet them at all levels of education. Content Area Focus – The analysis of gender equity within specific curriculum areas has been expanded from 6 to 10 chapters including mathematics, science, and engineering. Global/Diversity Focus – Global gender equity is addressed in a separate chapter as well as in numerous other chapters. The expanded section on gender equity strategies for diverse populations contains seven chapters on African Americans, Latina/os, Asian and Pacific Island Americans, American Indians, gifted students, students with disabilities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students. Action Oriented – All chapters contain practical recommendations for making education activities and outcomes more gender equitable. A final chapter consolidates individual chapter recommendations for educators, policymakers, and researchers to achieve gender equity in and through education. New Material – Expanded from 25 to 31 chapters, this new edition includes: *more emphasis on male gender equity and on sexuality issues; *special within population gender equity challenges (race, ability and disability, etc); *coeducation and single sex education; *increased use of rigorous research strategies such as meta-analysis showing more sex similarities and fewer sex differences and of evaluations of implementation programs; *technology and gender equity is now treated in three chapters; *women’s and gender studies; *communication skills relating to English, bilingual, and foreign language learning; and *history and implementation of Title IX and other federal and state policies. Since there is so much misleading information about gender equity and education, this Handbook will be essential for anyone who wants accurate, research-based information on controversial gender equity issues—journalists, policy makers, teachers, Title IX coordinators, equity trainers, women’s and gender study faculty, students, and parents.

Book Single Sex Schools

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cornelius Riordan
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2015-07-02
  • ISBN : 1475813651
  • Pages : 83 pages

Download or read book Single Sex Schools written by Cornelius Riordan and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single sex schooling might appear to be an obscure issue on the sidelines of the educational policy debates of our times. But it is far from this. In fact, a sizable number of people and political organizations would like to make these schools obscure, but somehow they are “scaling up” rather than down. In 1996, there were only two public single sex schools operating in America. By 2015 there are now at least 100 public single sex schools, despite opposition from the outset. These schools are primarily serving poor, urban, black and Latino, at risk children. This book takes up the challenge of studying the effectiveness of single sex schools. Riordan frees the discussion of its ideological and political baggage and brings a degree of theoretical and empirical balance to the debate. The book provides a sociological foundation for considering single sex schools. The basic argument is that the larger school context of all girls or all boys serves as the driving factor for producing favorable outcomes in single sex schools.

Book All Or Nothing

Download or read book All Or Nothing written by Soohyung Lee and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We estimate the causal impact of school and classroom gender composition on achievement. We take advantage of the random assignment of Korean middle school students to single-sex schools, co-educational (coed) schools with single-sex classes, and coed schools with mixed-gender classes. Male students attending single-sex classes within coed schools score 0.10 of a standard deviation below male students in mixed-gender classes, and this achievement gap is entirely accounted for by classroom gender composition. Conversely, male students attending single-sex schools outperform their counterparts in mixed-gender classes by 0.15 of a standard deviation. The significant impact of single-sex schools on male students' achievement are not driven by classroom gender composition, but largely accounted for by increases in student effort and study-time. We find little evidence that classroom or school gender composition affect the outcomes of female students.

Book The Gendering of Inequalities

Download or read book The Gendering of Inequalities written by Jane Jenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was first published in 2000: This work is founded on the premise that many analyses of economic restructuring and of gender relations fail to recognize two things. First, the situation facing women is different from that of the 1960s when the conceptual apparatuses for analyzing "women and work" were created. Labour markets are dominated by flexible, non-standard work, precarious contractual relations and income disparities. Therefore, it is difficult to structure political claims or analysis around the notion that there is a single labour market, that the primary problem is discrimination or inappropriate training, and that political strategies should focus on discrimination and non-traditional employment. Rather, new challenges require new solutions. The second point of departure is that is is impossible to understand either contemporary labour markets, or the roots of employment and other public policies without locating them vis a vis patterns of gender inequalities generated by and in these labour markets. The labour force has been feminized to such an extent that new, and often unequal gender relations are crucial to their very functioning.
