Book excerpt: This paper examined Response to Intervention (RTI) Tier II and Tier III strategies and their effect on student's grades, while comparing 2010-2011 5th grade students second quarter and fourth quarter grades in Language Arts, Reading and Math. The purpose of this research was to determine if using RTI Tier II and Tier III strategies in Language Arts, Reading and Math, increase students grades from Second quarter to Fourth quarter. I compared the second quarter grades to the fourth quarter grades of those students who were involved in Tier II and Tier III Response to Intervention Strategies in Language Arts, Reading and Math. At the end of the school year, I collected these students grades by printing out grade cards that included the class subjects, letter grades and percentage grades of all four quarters of the school year. I only looked at percentage grades for second quarter and fourth quarter in the 5th grade students who were involved in Response to Intervention Tier II and Tier III strategies. The data showed that the 5th grade students involved in Language Arts, Reading and Math Response to Intervention Tier II and Tier III strategies throughout the 2010-2011 academic school year had grades in Language Arts, Reading and Math that improved from second quarter to fourth quarter.

Book excerpt: This qualitative, collective case study researched how the Response to Intervention (RTI) service delivery model was used within the secondary educational environment in two Ohio schools. Areas researched included the type of professional development used to introduce and sustain RTI, the amount of administrative support, the use of universal screenings, the type of data collected, and the instructional strategies used at each tier. Three teachers and one school counselor were interviewed using open-ended questions, classroom observations were conducted, and state and student report cards were evaluated for this study. The population included a rural school with approximately 750 students in Grades 7-12 and a suburban school with 1,450 students in Grades 9-12. Both schools scored excellent on their state report card for the 2009-2010 school year, and each school used a four-tiered model of RTI. The findings concluded that at both schools, Tier I interventions were conducted within the regular classroom by the general education teacher, and Tier IV interventions were used for special education services. For Tier II, in one school, the general education teachers attempted different interventions, while at the other school, content area teachers provided tutoring through a special study hall. For Tier III, at one school, the students were sent to a reading specialist, while at the other school, students received tutoring assistance in the content areas and with study skills. For the two schools researched, the RtI service delivery model was successful. This research implies that RTI can be used within the secondary educational learning environment but that each school is going to have to look at its resources and devise a plan that best fits the school or school district. This research also implies that more studies need to be done on this topic to determine whether RTI can make a difference in closing the achievement gap.

In addition, the authors recommend a third term, Multi-Tiered Instruction, to differentiate the practices related to the purpose of the specific intervention.

Book excerpt: Implementing a Response to Intervention (RTI) system within a public school district includes several variables, one of which is identifying the contributing factors that are utilized to determine if a student may require more intense instructional interventions to achieve academic success. In districts with a majority Hispanic student population, RTI may take on an added dimension as it prompts educators to be culturally responsive in their determinations. Student performance is the treasure, which districts measure by way of state mandated assessments; in turn, assessing RTI's effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors considered by educators within one school district in the referral and placement of Hispanic students into Tier II and Tier III of Response to Intervention (RTI), and the academic achievement of Hispanic students enrolled in Tier II and Tier III RTI in comparison to peers not enrolled in Tier II or Tier III RTI. This study utilized a concurrent mixed method research design, which involved a survey with both close- and open-ended items distributed to the district's 4th and 5th grade teachers; additionally, a comparative analysis was performed between student scores on two state mandated assessment editions for students enrolled in Tier II RTI compared to those in Tier I. Analysis of the data yielded three emergent themes: The need for ongoing Professional Development; Time; and, Duration of Interventions.

Book excerpt: Response to Intervention (RtI) is a multi-tiered system of support that provides varying levels of intervention to address academic achievement. This data-driven framework allows educators to categorize students into tiers and identify specific areas of strength and weakness. Yet, the problem the study seeks to address is that educators have a limited understanding of the self-reported academic self-efficacy of students in the varying levels of an RtI model. This mixed methods study investigated the perceptions of elementary-aged students and general education teachers. Through the administration of itemized rating scale survey, student academic self-efficacy perceptions were reported. The researcher also conducted five one-on-one interviews with general education teachers to garner their viewpoints regarding differences, if any, between academics, behaviors, and motivations between students in different RtI tiers. Archival records of RtI student movement data and change scores were also reviewed. An analysis of the survey data revealed that students in Tier III of an RtI framework, have statistically lower levels of academic self-efficacy than their Tier I or Tier II peers. The reports of general education teachers revealed that on average, teachers had lower academic expectations for Tier III students than their Tier I or Tier II peers. A final analysis of the archival records review indicated that mean test change scores for Tier III students were statistically lower than the mean test change scores for Tier I or Tier II students. This research allows elementary educators to gain stronger understanding of the academic self-efficacy perceptions of Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III students within a RtI system. The results of this study suggest that educational leaders must continue to reflect upon current practices and seek innovative ways to target and improve the academic self-efficacy levels of elementary students.
