The Expressive Vocabulary Test was used to assess expressive language abilities; the Preschool Social Behavior Scale- Teacher Form was used to assess levels of physical and relational aggression; and the Early Childhood Social Cognitions Interview and Relational Aggression Perspective Taking Questions were used to measure each participating child's level of perspective taking skills. Anticipated benefits of this project include (a) furthering knowledge of relational aggression correlates and possible predictors, (b) differentiating predictors and correlates of relational aggression from predictors and correlates of physical aggression, and (c) utilizing information regarding the correlates of relational aggression to make recommendations concerning the development of relational aggression intervention and prevention programs.

Over the past 25 years, there has been a growing body of literature on relational aggression and other non-physical forms of aggression that have focused predominantly on gender differences, development, and risk and protective factors. In this volume, the focus turns to the development of relational aggression during childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood. Book excerpt: Abstract: Relational aggression is a pivotal concept associated with the trend toward increasing attention toward aggression in girls. Specifically, acts of relationship manipulation are hypothesized to be especially salient for girls, who are expected to covet social acceptance and inclusion more than boys. Past studies have supported a distinction between relational and physical forms of aggression and identified unique correlates of relational aggression. However, characteristics of relational aggression have been largely examined in isolation, thereby providing only indirect information about the nomological network of relational aggression. The present study adopted a construct validation approach to replicating and expanding upon existing research. Two hundred twenty-four children, aged 11 to 14, completed measures of relational, reactive, and proactive aggression as well as various other behaviors. One parent and one teacher per child completed parallel measures. At the manifest variable level, hierarchical regression analyses, which were conducted separately for child, parent, and teacher reports, varied across informants. Overall, these analyses suggested that relational aggression is both uniquely reactive and uniquely proactive in nature. Consistent with previous research, relational aggression was associated with such harmful correlates as social and internalizing problems. In many cases, such associations were mediated by either reactive or proactive aggression. Moreover, although there were generally no gender differences in mean levels of relational aggression, there was some suggestion that the implications of relational aggression may differ for boys and girls. At the latent variable level, a multitrait-multimethod approach was used to model associations between relevant constructs. Overall, these analyses provided consistent support for the convergent validity of all relevant constructs. However, there was less evidence for the discriminant validity of relational, reactive, and proactive aggression, suggesting that the distinguishing features of these hypothesized aggression subtypes may become obscured when combining multiple informants' perspectives. Method effects were identified for parent and child reports. Differences between results at the manifest and latent variable levels highlighted potential limitations of combining multiple reports. As direct tests of fundamental assumptions of a multi-informant approach were unavailable, it is suggested that the unique manifest variable results may offer more promising directions for future research.

Book excerpt: Relational aggression is a known form of aggressive behavior in which the relationship is used as the tool to inflict harm. Previous research indicates that relational aggression is predictive of maladjustment in children, is present in early childhood, and is linked to parental attitudes and practice. Using questionnaires, this study examined the relationship among parent beliefs and reported intervention strategies for relational aggression and teacher and parent reported levels of relational aggression in children. Findings indicated that parents and teachers rated preschool-aged (2-5 years) boys as more physically aggressive than preschool-aged girls, and rated older preschool-age children as more relationally aggressive than younger children. Parents rated their children lower in relational and physical aggression than their teachers did. In addition, there was a significant correlation between parental beliefs about relational aggression and how they rated their child's level of aggression. Parents who viewed relational aggression as a typical/normal behavior also rated their child lower in prosocial skills and higher in relational and physical aggression than parents who viewed relational aggression as abnormal. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

To this end, there were four major goals: (a) to determine the most parsimonious system of conceptualising forms of aggression and victimization to examine; (b) sex differences in relational and physical aggression and victimization; (c) family and individual factors related to dominance and aggression/victimization; and (d) the association between aggression and victimization. Individual factors were within four domains: peer dominance status, self-discrepancy, self-efficacy, and social importance. Participants were 367 5 th and 6 th grade, English-speaking boys and girls in suburban Montreal, Quebec. Peer-ratings of aggression and victimization as well as dominance were obtained, and participants rated their parents on dimensions of involvement and supervision. Self-ratings were obtained for actual, ideal, and ought selves regarding dominance-related characteristics; self-efficacy for aggression, conflict, and non-conflict situations, as well as outcome expectancies for aggression; and social importance for male and female dominance-related characteristics. Results showed that, using Confirmatory Factor Analysis, two separate factors (physical and relational) emerged for aggression and victimization. Boys were rated as using more physical, and girls more relational aggression (after controlling for physical aggression). Boys received higher ratings on physical victimization (when they were also aggressive). The major findings related to the remaining goals were that the association between parenting and dominance differed for boys and girls; dominance was negatively predictive of physical, and positively predictive of relational aggression for girls; dominance was negatively predictive of victimization; actual-ideal discrepancy for male dominance-related characteristics was predictive of physical victimization for boys; self-efficacy for conflict situations was negatively related to relational and positively related to physical aggression for girls; social importance for female dominance-related characteristics was negatively predictive of physical and positively predictive of relational aggression, and; victimization was more strongly related to aggression for girls. The results of this study may help to clarify the confusion about how to conceptualise different forms of aggression. In addition, it adds to the literature on sex differences in types of aggression by attempting to empirically test the reasons for girls' and boys' use of different aggressive strategies and elucidating some of the factors that are differentially predictive of aggression and victimization for boys and girls.

Participants were 2,745 2-11-year olds nested in 1,982 families, which were themselves nested in 96 Canadian neighborhoods. Hierarchical linear modeling showed that the total variation explained by the three-level model was 28.03% for physical aggression and 17.57% for prosocial behavior. For both childhood behaviors, approximately 66% of this explained variance was between individuals and up to 30% was between families. The smallest amount of observed variation was between neighborhoods. Significant individual-level predictors common to both childhood behaviors were child's sex and maternal hostility toward the target child. Specifically, boys had more mother-reported physical aggression and less prosocial behavior. Children who experienced greater-than-average maternal hostility (compared to siblings) were more physically aggressive and less prosocial. At the family level, significant common predictors were mother's depressed mood and punitive parenting. Children had higher levels of physical aggression and lower levels of prosocial behavior in families where mothers had greater depressed mood and used more punitive parenting practices. At the neighborhood level, greater perceived problems and lower poverty level were associated with higher levels of physical aggression. Results are discussed with reference to past and future studies of multilevel effects on children's socialization.
