Book A Comparison of Performance in Operating the Crl 8 Master Slave Manipulator Under Monocular and Binocular Viewing Conditions

Download or read book A Comparison of Performance in Operating the Crl 8 Master Slave Manipulator Under Monocular and Binocular Viewing Conditions written by Gerald Patrick Chubb and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four pieces of equipment were employed in this study: (1) a Central Research Laboratory, Model 8, masterslave manipulator, (2) a 12-hole formboard and 15 pegs, (3) two stopwatches, and (4) an eyepatch. The CRL-8 is a mechanical, remote manipulator that translates the operator's movements with a 1 to 1 correspondence and provides direct kinesthetic and proprioceptive feedback. The task consisted of placing pegs in the appropriate holes of a formboard. The pegs were circular, 3.8 cm in diameter and 1.9 cm thick. Performance times were recorded for six subjects on a simple remote handling task under two direct viewing conditions: binocular and monocular. All subjects performed under both conditions with counterbalancing between subjects and within subjects between sessions (I and II). The subjects used the masterslave manipulator to perform a shortened and revised version of the Placing Subtest of the Minnesota Rate of Manipulation Test. Performance times for the monocular viewing condition were 20% greater, exhibited greater variability, and reached an asymptotic level later. (Author).

Book Telerobotics Automation and Human Supervisory Control

Download or read book Telerobotics Automation and Human Supervisory Control written by Thomas B. Sheridan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, the author and his colleagues in the MIT Man-Machine Systems Laboratory have been carrying out experimental research in the area of teleoperation, telerobotics, and supervisory control - a new form of technology that allows humans to work through machines in hazardous environments and control complex systems such as aircraft and nuclear power plants. This timely reference brings together a variety of theories and technologies that have emerged in a number of fields of application, describing common themes, presenting experiments and hardware embodiments as examples, and discussing the advantages and the drawbacks of this new form of human-machine interaction. There are many places - such as outer space, the oceans, and nuclear, biologically, and chemically toxic environments - that are; inaccessible or hazardous to humans but in which work needs to be done. Telerobotics - remote supervision by human operators of robotic or semi-automatic devices - is a way to enter these difficult environments. Yet it raises a host of problems, such as the retrieval of sensory information for the human operator and how to control the remote devices with sufficient dexterity. In its complete coverage of the theoretical and technological aspects of telerobotics and human-computer cooperation in the control of complex systems, this book moves beyond the simplistic notion of humans versus automation to provide the necessary background for exploring a new and informed cooperative relationship, between humans and machines.

Book Task Performance with the CRL Model 8 Master slave Manipulator as a Function of Color coding Distance and Practice

Download or read book Task Performance with the CRL Model 8 Master slave Manipulator as a Function of Color coding Distance and Practice written by D. Frederick Baker and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This experiment was undertaken to investigate the ability of Master-Slave Manipulator (CRL Model 8) operators to identify the slave hands and their movements with corresponding components and functions of the human body (specifically forearm, wrist and finger movement). A handling task involving rearrangement of blocks was devised to be performed under two different conditions: (1) with standard slave jaws (red jaws) and (2) with slave jaws modified so that the jaw corresponding to the thumb of the operator was green. The task was performed at distances of 9 inches, 36 inches, and 63 inches from the radiation shield. Work time as a function of task distance was investigated and work ratios, based on mean time scores for direct handling vs. remote handling, were determined."--Abstract
