Book Morris Informal Reading Inventory

Download or read book Morris Informal Reading Inventory written by Darrell Morris and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2014-10-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one concise volume, Darrell Morris provides a complete tool for assessing students' reading ability. Unlike most informal reading inventories (IRIs), Morris's approach incorporates measures of automaticity (word recognition and fluency) together with oral reading accuracy and comprehension. This results in more efficient, accurate, and thorough assessments. Included are an examiner's manual and all test materials for the basic IRI (grades 2-8) plus a separate beginning reading inventory (grades K-1). In a large-size spiral-bound format for ease of use, the book features more than 90 pages of word/letter lists, illustrated reading passages, and other test materials, all with permission to photocopy. See also Morris's Diagnosis and Correction of Reading Problems, Second Edition, which guides teachers through a comprehensive diagnostic battery for planning instruction and intervention.

Book Comparing Silent Reading Comprehension and Oral Reading Comprehension in Academic Achievement

Download or read book Comparing Silent Reading Comprehension and Oral Reading Comprehension in Academic Achievement written by Dustin Michael Geiser and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to compare the differences between silent reading comprehension and oral reading comprehension. Throughout this study 22 fourth grade students were assessed through multiple comprehension assessments to find the differences in results of silent vs. oral reading comprehension. This study showed that students with lower level reading abilities performed better on reading assessments that they silently read. Students with middle to upper reading levels performed better on assessments that were orally read to them.

Book Curriculum based Measurement

Book excerpt: Students referred for school psychology services often have reading skills deficits and experience difficulty in other academic areas. There are no procedures, detect small changes in reading growth as student grade level increases (Skinner et al., 2002). The current study was designed to extend research on CBM reading assessment procedures. Specifically, researchers compared the effects of oral and silent reading on the number of questions participants answered correctly across elementary and secondary students. Additionally, researchers compared the effect reading mode (oral versus silent) had on comprehension rates across elementary and secondary students. Finally, the relationships among oral and silent reading comprehension rate and WCPM and oral and silent reading comprehension level and WCPM were analyzed. Participants were assessed in two sessions. In one session, each student read three passages silently and answered comprehension questions. In the other session, each student read three passages orally and answered comprehension questions. The passages and questions used were selected from the Timed Readings Series (Spargo, 1989). For both reading conditions, the investigator recorded the number of seconds required for the student to read each passage, the number of questions the student answered correctly, and the student's rate of comprehension. For the oral reading condition, the experimenter recorded errors and the number of words read correctly in 1 minute. The results of this study support the validity of WCPM as a measure of comprehension rate, but not comprehension level. The results also indicate that oral reading does not hinder reading comprehension, but may actually enhance comprehension relative to silent reading. Thus, the current results suggest that during CBM, asking students to answer questions after reading aloud is appropriate, but measures obtained from the comprehension questions are only useful if converted to rates. The current results support the use of WCPM as a measure of reading comprehension rates. Although the current results support oral reading comprehension rate as a possible measure of general reading skills, future research is needed to establish the reliability, validity, and sensitivity of that measure.

Book An Examination of the Relationship of Oral Reading Fluency Silent Reading Fluency Reading Comprehension and the Colorado State Reading Assessment

Download or read book An Examination of the Relationship of Oral Reading Fluency Silent Reading Fluency Reading Comprehension and the Colorado State Reading Assessment written by Christy L. Bloomquist and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study evaluated how measures of oral reading fluency (ORF) and silent reading fluency (SRF) compare as predictors of reading comprehension and how these predictors vary as a function of proficiency level for fourth- and fifth-grade students. Additionally, the study sought to examine the relationship between measures of oral reading fluency, silent reading fluency, reading comprehension, and the Transitional Colorado Assessment Program (TCAP) with these students. Participants were 175 fourth- and fifth-grade students from two randomly selected schools in Colorado. A correlational predictive design was used. Results indicated that measures of ORF and SRF were predictors of reading comprehension and that the relationship of measures of ORF and SRF with comprehension changes over time. Regression analysis results indicated that 45.0% of the variance in reading comprehension was accounted for by the ORF measure for the sample population, as compared to 53.0% of the variance accounted for by SRF measures. Thus, measures of SRF might be a better predictor for maturing readers to determine reading proficiency, monitor student progress, and guide instructional practices. A structural equation model (SEM) analyzed the relationship of the measure of SRF with reading comprehension as moderated by proficiency level. Analysis for the SRF measure by reading proficiency was conducted at the whole group level. The model accounted for 59.0% of the moderation. Results indicated that reading proficiency level and the SRF measure were both associated with reading comprehension. Reading proficiency level is a significant moderator of the relationship between measures of reading comprehension and SRF. A SEM mediation model was used to analyze the relationship of measures of ORF, SRF, reading comprehension, and TCAP. The direct effects of the ORF and SRF measures on TCAP were both predictive with 66.0% of the variance accounted for with SRF measure and 66.5% of the variance accounted for with ORF measure. Results indicated that as grade level increases, the relationship between measures of ORF, SRF, and reading comprehension changes. Additionally, SRF measures can be a viable alternative to ORF measures for upper elementary students as a predictor of reading comprehension and on the TCAP high-stake assessment.
