Book A COMPARISON OF INDUSTRIAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION AMONG U S AND MEXICAN MANUFACTURERS IN THE BORDER REGION PROJECT NUMBER

Download or read book A COMPARISON OF INDUSTRIAL ENERGY CONSUMPTION AMONG U S AND MEXICAN MANUFACTURERS IN THE BORDER REGION PROJECT NUMBER written by and published by . This book was released on with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The causal variables adopted for consideration were the number of establishments, the number of employees, the value of shipments, the cost of electricity, and the cost of natural gas. [...] The cost of electricity for industrial energy users in the Mexican border region has been steadily increasing to the point where the cost is now roughly the same on either side of the border. [...] For the three analyzed industrial sectors, which represent the three largest sectors among all maquiladoras, it was found that the cost of electricity is related to the size of the company, as measured in the dollar value of shipments-the larger the company is, the lower its energy cost per dollar value of shipments. [...] During the site visit it was observed that at present the hot flue gas from the generator is thrown out to the atmosphere and consequently the heat content of the gas is lost to the surrounding. [...] The resulting demand and energy savings depend on the power rating of the compressor, the load factor, the horsepower reduction factor, the current and proposed 13 discharge pressures, the inlet pressure, and the type of compressor.

Book Both Sides of the Border

Download or read book Both Sides of the Border written by Linda Fernandez and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-30 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mexican -- United States border represents much more than the meeting place of two nations. Our border communities are often a line of first defense -- absorbing the complex economic, environmental and social impacts of globalization that ripple through the region. In many ways, our success or failure in finding solutions for the environmental, social and economic issues that plague the region may well define our ability to meet similar challenges thousands of miles from the border zone. Border residents face the environmental security concerns posed by water scarcity and transboundary air pollution; the planning and infrastructure needs of an exploding population; the debilitating effects of inadequate sanitary and health facilities; and the crippling cycle of widespread poverty. Yet, with its manifold problems, the border area remains an area of great dynamism and hope -- a multicultural laboratory of experimentation and grass-roots problem-solving. Indeed, as North America moves towards a more integrated economy, citizen action at the local level is pushing governments to adapt to the driving forces in the border area by creating new institutional arrangements and improving old ones. If there is one defining feature of this ground-up push for more responsive transboundary policies and institutions, it is a departure from the closed, formalistic models of the past to a more open, transparent and participatory model of international interaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses the real effects of the energy reform in Mexico by looking at its impact on manufacturing output through changes in energy prices. Using sub-sector and state-level manufacturing output data, along with past variation in energy prices, we find electricity prices––relative to oil and gas––to be more important in the manufacturing process, with a one standard deviation reduction in electricity prices leading to a 2.8 percent increase in manufacturing output. Our estimated elasticities together with plausible reductions in electricity tariffs derived from the energy reform, could increase manufacturing output by up to 3.6 percent, and overall real GDP by 0.6 percent. Larger reductions are possible over the long run if increased efficiency in the sector leads electricity prices to converge to U.S. levels. Moreover, including the impact of lower electricity tariffs on the services sector, could lead to significantly larger effects on GDP. Accounting for endogeneity of unit labor costs in a panel VAR setting leads to an additional indirect channel which amplifies the impact of electricity prices on output.
