This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Comparison of Egyptian Symbols With Those of the Hebrews The origin of the science of symbols is lost in the distance of time, and seems to be connected with the cradle of humanity - the oldest religions were governed by it; the arts of design, architecture, statuary, and painting were born under its influence, and primitive writing was one of its applications. Did symbols exist in spoken, before being translated into written, language? Were primitive words the source of symbols? Are the questions on which these researches are based. The first men, in order to express abstract ideas, bor rowed images from surrounding nature; by a surprising intuition, they attached to each race and species of animals, to plants, and the elements, ideas of beauty or ugliness, of good or evil, of affection or hatred, of purity or uncleanness, of truth or error. Those fathers of the human race did not compare, but they named their ideas from corresponding objects in the material world; thus, if they wished to say, the king of an obedient people, they did not compare him to a bee governing a submissive hive, but they called him bee; if they desired to say filial piety, they did not compare it to the stork feeding its family, but they called it stork; to express power, they called it bull; the power of man, the arm; strength of soul, lion; the soul aspiring to heaven, the hawk that sails in the clouds and looks stead-fastly at the sun. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hebrews in Egypt: And Their Exodus It is obvious, when no fresh sources of informa tion have been discovered, that no new historic sketch of the Hebrews in Egypt and their Exodus, differing throughout from its innumerable predecessors, can be written, unless its author's interpretation of the old authorities be largely novel and individual; and that such an interpretation depends mainly upon his views of their character. Book A Glossary of Important Symbols

Download or read book A Glossary of Important Symbols written by Adelaide Susan Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Glossary of Important Symbols: In Their Hebrew, Pagan and Christian Forms Each year, the stream of travel increases and many people are brought in contact with ancient terms and devices with which they are totally unfamiliar. Each year, new classes are formed in the History of Art and thousands of students enter art schools where they copy classic designs which represented in the past the customs and beliefs of powerful and intelligent people. In order to thoroughly enjoy historical and religious works or to interpret the exact language of form and color in ancient buildings, it is necessary to be acquainted with the most important emblems, from their origin in the past to the present application of these terms. The Bible contains the largest number of symbols of any history in the world. Readers and teachers need to be familiar with the popular forms of expression employed by Hebrew, Pagan and Christian, in order to interpret correctly the Scriptures as well as classic and romantic literature. Architects, sculptors, decorators and illustrators of fact and fiction, designers of book covers and plates, smiths and jewelers are often at a loss to find an object which will lend itself to their design and at the same time typify something or someone that they desire to suggest or memorialize in its plan. The reasons governing the connection between the larger number of symbols and their meanings are so wrapped in myth and legend that an entire volume is often necessary to explain a few emblems. Book Legends of Babylon and Egypt in Relation to Hebrew Tradition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Legends of Babylon and Egypt in Relation to Hebrew Tradition Classic Reprint written by Leonard W. King and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends of Babylon and Egypt, in Relation to Hebrew Tradition In these lectures an attempt is made, not so much to restate familiar facts, as to accommodate them to new and supplementary evidence which has been published in America since the outbreak of the war. But even without the excuse of recent discovery, no apology would be needed for any comparison or contrast of Hebrew tradition with the mythological and legendary beliefs of Babylon and Egypt. Hebrew achievements in the sphere of religion and ethics are only thrown into stronger relief when studied against their contemporary background. The bulk of our new material is furnished by some early texts, written towards the close of the third millennium B.c. They incorporate traditions which extend in unbroken outline from their own period into the remote ages of the past, and claim to trace the history of man back to his creation. They represent the early national traditions of the Sumerian people, who preceded the Semites as the ruling race in Babylonia; and incidentally they necessitate a revision of current views with regard to the cradle of Babylonian civilization. The most remarkable of the new documents is one which relates in poetical narrative an account of the Creation, of Antediluvian history, and of the Deluge. It thus exhibits a close resemblance in structure to the corresponding Hebrew traditions, a resemblance that is not shared by the Semitic-Babylonian Versions at present known. But in matter the Sumerian tradition is more primitive than any of the Semitic versions. In spite of the fact that the text appears to have reached us in a magical setting, and to some extent in epitomized form, this early document enables us to tap the stream of tradition at a point far above any at which approach has hitherto been possible.
