Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman and the Law: A Comparison of the Rights of Men and the Rights of Women Before the Law No one, except reviewers for newspapers, whose whole idea of a volume is drawn from this uncer tain source, ever reads a preface. It furnishes a cozy little nook into which the snugly ensconced author may hide and say just what he pleases, without danger of discovery. Anice little retreat it is, surely and the writer has slyly crept into this hiding-place just to talk it all over to him self. Shall the old and worn manuscript be ex changed for type? Will the volume bear the searching criticism of dear friends and respected acquaintances? Will the cause of human equal ity and the happiness of the race be advanced thereby? Will the distinguished leaders in the Woman's Suffrage Party shout in derision, or will they discover a co-working spirit? What will Mrs. Livermore, or Miss Dickinson, or Mrs. Stowe say about it, if a stray Copy should be placed in their laps by the newsboy, when there is nothing else to command their attention? What would those bright angels over there say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Of Men and Women written by Pearl S. Buck and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative and fascinating exploration of male–female relationships by the Nobel Prize–winning author of The Good Earth. Pearl S. Buck grew up in China, accustomed to its traditions, but when she moved to the United States as an adult in the 1930s she was struck by the cultural differences in gender roles and expectations. In nine short chapters, she applies this personal experience to an exploration of the power dynamics of the American household, drawing one universal conclusion: “Complete freedom is the atmosphere in which men and women can live together most happily. But it must be complete.” As she makes her case, Buck outlines two American female archetypes: the dissatisfied “gunpowder woman” and the placid “angel.” “Sensible and witty, merciless and often amusing,” this is a book that ultimately delivers a clarion call for men and women to find common ground and succeed hand in hand (The New York Times Book Review). The first American female Nobel laureate, Buck was a pioneer women’s rights activist and humanitarian who believed both sexes could find happiness together, even in challenging economic or political circumstances. Imbued with an unshakeable faith in equality and strident candor, Of Men and Women remains a daringly original and candid work in the canon of feminist literature. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Pearl S. Buck including rare images from the author’s estate.

  • Author : A. Nosikov
  • Publisher : IOS Press
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9781586033224
  • Pages : 242 pages

Download or read book EUROHIS written by A. Nosikov and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The EUROHIS project has focused on the comparability of health surveys and has uncovered some problems that arise when aiming to compare data from different countries. Similar problems of cross-cultural comparability also arise when comparing data from other sources, such as health registers, and are just as complex and difficult to tackle. One of the main advantages of health surveys, however, is the relatively low cost and time involved in adapting them according to the needs of health policy-makers. This work shows that the output from the EUROHIS project provides common instruments for the measurement of eight health indicators. The development of these instruments has required careful consideration of relevant common concepts and how these should be defined and operationalized. The instruments are freely available for use by all countries, with the aim of enhancing national health information systems and facilitating cross-national comparisons of health data.
