Book Cantonese as Written Language

Download or read book Cantonese as Written Language written by Don Snow and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cantonese is the only dialect of Chinese which has developed a widely known and used written form. It has played a role in publishing in the Guangdong region since the late Ming dynasty when various types of verses using Cantonese were published as mu yu shu (‘wooden fish books’). In the early twentieth century these dialect texts were joined by Cantonese opera scripts, published as popular reading material. However, it was only after the end of the Second World War that written Cantonese came to be widely used in popular newspapers and magazines, advertising, and in the private communications. Cantonese as Written Language examines this development in the broader context of diglossia, and also of the patterns by which spoken vernaculars have developed written forms in other societies. Based on primary source research, including interviews with publishers and writers who played an important role in the growth of written Cantonese, the author argues that this move of Cantonese into the realm of written language is closely associated with Hong Kong's distinct local culture and identity. The growth of the written vernacular also reflects the territory's evolving cultural distinctiveness from mainland China, first as a British colony, and now as a Special Administrative Region of China.

Submitted by Mau Wing Yan, Annie for the Degree of Master of Arts at The University of Hong Kong in June 2005 What are the differences between languages and dialects? How can we classify varieties as dialects of a language or as languages? Although these are straightforward questions, we do not have generally accepted answers for them either theoretically or practically. This research aims to find out if Cantonese is a language or a dialect. The literature on the definitions of the two terms is first reviewed and it is found that there is no clear-cut distinction between language and dialect. Moreover, linguists may place emphasis on different criteria when they use these terms, and hence arrive at different results. In addition, it is found that a large variety of criteria has been used, ranging from linguistic characteristics to social and political factors. In view of the complexities of the situation, more literature is reviewed to see how linguists perceive the status of Cantonese. Some linguists try to solve the problem by analyzing it linguistically, and unfortunately they come up with opposing sets of linguistic features and arguments. Another linguist suggests perceiving the matter in another way by using non-linguistic factors. It is found that in order to analyze the istatus of Cantonese, a large variety of factors has to be considered in order to reach an objective conclusion. As a result, the status of Cantonese is analyzed in terms of a group of factors, which include prestige; degree of standardization; degree of mutual intelligibility; history, form and legitimacy of Cantonese writing; linguistic factors; political factors; historical, cultural and economic factors; and speakers' perception of their speech and identity. Most of the factors support the dialect status of Cantonese and some support the language status of it. Although there is great mutual unintelligibility in terms of speech and writing between Cantonese and Mandarin, which is a very strong supporting factor for the language status of Cantonese, there exists an even stronger counteracting force of the speakers' perception of their speech and their sense of identity, which totally offsets the factor of mutual unintelligibility. In conclusion, although Cantonese speech and writing are to some extent unintelligible to people in China, Hong Kong people do perceive themselves as Chinese and their speech as a variety of Chinese. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3178970 Subjects: Cantonese dialects - Social aspects - China - Hong Kong

Book Utterance Particles in Cantonese Conversation

Download or read book Utterance Particles in Cantonese Conversation written by K.K. Luke and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Utterance particles, also known as modal particles or sentence-final particles, form a class of words in Cantonese which is of great descriptive and theoretical interest to students of language. Most utterance particles do not have any semantic content (truth-conditional meaning), and few can be said to have a consistent grammatical function. They are notorious for being extremely resistant to conventional syntactic and semantic analysis. The aim of this book is to seek a better understanding of utterance particles by concentrating analytical attention on three of them; namely, LA (la55), LO (lo55), and WO (wo44). Adopting a set of theoretical assumptions and analytical methods in the tradition of Conversation Analysis within an ethnomethodological framework, an attempt is made to approach these objects by examining them in the context of interactional details in naturally occurring conversations. This book presents original accounts of, and fresh insights into these utterance particles in Cantonese. But it also raises theoretical and methodological questions of more general interest. These include, among other things, the status of data and evidence in the analysis of language, and the possibility of a socially constituted linguistics.
