Book The Cognitive Development of Reading and Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Cognitive Development of Reading and Reading Comprehension written by Carol McDonald Connor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-26 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning to read may be the most complex cognitive operation that children are expected to master, and the latest research in cognitive development has offered important insights into how children succeed or fail at this task. The Cognitive Development of Reading and Reading Comprehension is a multidisciplinary, evidence-based resource for teachers and researchers that examines reading comprehension from a cognitive development perspective, including the principal theories and methods used in the discipline. The book combines research into basic cognitive processes—genetics, perception, memory, executive functioning, and language—with an investigation of the effects that context and environment have on literacy outcomes, making clear how factors such as health, family life, community, policy, and ecology can influence children’s cognitive development.

Book Handbook of Individual Differences in Reading

Download or read book Handbook of Individual Differences in Reading written by Peter Afflerbach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central unifying theme of this state-of-the-art contribution to research on literacy is its rethinking and reconceptualization of individual differences in reading. Previous research, focused on cognitive components of reading, signaled the need for ongoing work to identify relevant individual differences in reading, to determine the relationship(s) of individual differences to reading development, and to account for interactions among individual differences. Addressing developments in each of these areas, this volume also describes affective individual differences, and the environments in which individual differences in reading may emerge, operate, interact, and change. The scant comprehensive accounting of individual differences in reading is reflected in the nature of reading instruction programs today, the outcomes that are expected from successful teaching and learning, and the manner in which reading development is assessed. An important contribution of this volume is to provide prima facie evidence of the benefits of broad conceptualization of the ways in which readers differ. The Handbook of Individual Differences in Reading moves the field forward by encompassing cognitive, non-cognitive, contextual, and methodological concerns. Its breadth of coverage serves as both a useful summary of the current state of knowledge and a guide for future work in this area.

Download or read book Beyond Individual and Group Differences written by James T. Lamiell and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2003-07-02 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "James Lamiell is a creative, sophisticated, and careful thinker, one whose ideas are deserving of broad attention....The book should be of interest to scholars and practitioners, along with advanced graduate students." --Kenneth J. Gergen, Swarthmore College Beyond Individual and Group Differences: Human Individuality, Scientific Psychology, and William Stern′s Critical Personalism examines the history of psychology′s effort to come to terms with human individuality, from the time of Wundt to present day. With a primary emphasis on the contributions of German psychologist William Stern, this book generates a wider appreciation for Stern′s perspective on human individuality and for the proper place of personalitic thinking within scientific psychology. The author presents an alternative approach to the logical positivism that permeates traditional psychological thought and methodology making this an innovative, ground-breaking work. Feature and Benefits: Provides book-length treatment of the concept of human individuality in twentieth century scientific psychology, highlighting the historical contributions made by the German psychologist and philosopher William Stern (1871-1938). Critically appraises contemporary thinking about personality in light of historical and methodological considerations. Challenges readers to rethink the problem of human individuality with research that mounts a direct empirical challenge to the long-standing belief that it is meaningless to characterize individuals without comparing them with one another. Concludes with a general discussion of the potential of personalistic thinking both as a foundation for personality theory and as a framework for social thought. Beyond Individual and Group Differences is a dynamic book for academics and scholars in the areas of personality psychology, individual differences, and the history of psychology.

Book What are the Similarities and Differences of Reading Instruction of Fourth Grade Students with Learning Disabilities Taught in a Co taught Classroom a Resource Classroom and a Single taught Teacher Classroom

Download or read book What are the Similarities and Differences of Reading Instruction of Fourth Grade Students with Learning Disabilities Taught in a Co taught Classroom a Resource Classroom and a Single taught Teacher Classroom written by Doreen Avenall and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reading instruction and the perceptions of three fourth grade students with learning disabilities in a co-taught classroom, a resource room or a single-teacher taught classroom as well as their teachers. The focus was on the perceived and observed differences and similarities between each of the three classroom settings. Qualitative research methods were utilized in this study to collect data. These methods included classroom observations, student interviews, teacher interviews, field notes, and audio tapes. Research questions guided the study and the data was analyzed and reported on consistent with qualitative studies. This study suggests that students with learning disabilities who receive reading instruction in a resource room, a co-taught classroom, or a single-teach taught classroom all perceived themselves as good readers. These students also believed that purpose of reading is to read at higher levels. The students also felt like their teachers supported their reading skills in numerous ways. This study also suggests that the general educations teachers view their reading instruction that they provide to students with learning disabilities much the same as they view instruction for the general education students. The special education teacher who co-taught in the general education room was more likely to provide individualized instruction on a daily basis, as she met with her students with learning disabilities every day in the general education classroom. The resource room teacher viewed the direct instruction in the resource room for her students with learning disabilities as imperative. Many similarities and differences between the general education special education classroom settings were uncovered in this study.
