Book The NAEP 1997 Arts Report Card

Download or read book The NAEP 1997 Arts Report Card written by Hilary R. Persky and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last several years have seen a growing resolve among educators and policymakers to assure the place of a solid arts education in U.S. schools. In 1997, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) conducted a national assessment in the arts at grade 8. The assessment included the areas of music, theater, and visual arts. For each of these arts areas, this Report Card describes the achievement of eighth graders within the general population and in various subgroups. Taken with the information provided about instructional and institutional variables, this report gives a context for evaluating the status of students' learning in the arts. The arts assessment was designed to measure the content specifications described in the arts framework for NAEP. The arts have a unique capacity to integrate intellect, emotions, and physical skills in the creation of meaning. Meaningful arts assessments need to be built around three arts processes: creating, performing, and responding. To capture these processes, the arts assessment exercises included authentic tasks that assessed students' knowledge and skills and constructed-response and multiple choice questions that explore students' abilities to describe, analyze, interpret, and evaluate works of art in written form. Data are reported in overall summaries for creating, performing, and responding in terms of student- and school-reported background variables. Student results for theater are discussed in terms of teacher-reported background variables as well. The major findings of the assessment are that a large percentage of grade 8 students attend schools in which music and visual arts were taught usually by specialists; most students attended schools in which instruction following district or state curricula was offered in music and visual arts, but not in theater or dance; and most visual arts and music instruction took place in school facilities that were dedicated to that subject. Book NAEP 1992 Mathematics State Report for New York

Download or read book NAEP 1992 Mathematics State Report for New York written by National Assessment of Educational Progress, Princeton, NJ. and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1990, the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) included a Trial State Assessment which, for the first time in the NAEP's history, made voluntary state-by-state assessments. This 1992 mathematics report marks the first attempt of the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) to shift to standards-based reporting of National Assessment statistics. NAEP results are reported by achievement levels which are descriptions of how students should perform relative to a body of content reflected in the NAEP frameworks; in other words, how much students should know. The 1992 assessment covered six mathematics content areas: (1) numbers and operations; (2) measurement; (3) geometry; (4) data analysis, statistics, and probability; (5) algebra and functions; and (6) estimation. In the District of Columbia, 2,399 fourth-grade students in 107 public schools and 1,816 eighth-grade students in 35 public schools were assessed. This report describes the mathematics performance of District of Columbia fourth- and eighth-grade students in public schools and compares their overall performance to students in the Northeast region of the United States and the nation. The distribution of the results are provided for subpopulations of students including race/ethnicity; type of community--advantaged/disadvantaged urban, extreme rural, and other; parents' education level; gender; and content area performance. To provide a context for understanding students' mathematics proficiency, students, their mathematics teachers, and principals completed questionnaires which focused on: what are students taught? (curriculum coverage, homework, and instructional emphasis); how is mathematics instruction delivered? (resources, collaborating in small groups, using mathematical objects, and materials); how are calculators and computers used? (access and use of calculators, availability of computers, and when to use a calculator); who is teaching mathematics? (educational background); and conditions beyond school that facilitate mathematics learning and teaching (amount of reading materials in the home, hours of television watched per day, student absenteeism, and students' perceptions of mathematics). The average proficiency of fourth-grade students in District of Columbia on the NAEP mathematics scale was 191 compared to 217 nationwide; for District of Columbia eighth-grade students the average proficiency was 234 compared to 266 nationwide. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an essential text for primary trainees and teachers. While the focus in early reading is on systematic synthetic phonics, it is important to see the bigger picture and understand that teaching reading is a continuum that involves more much than the mechanics of reading. The book focuses on a range of issues to develop children who can read into children who do read, including extending reading with proficient readers, engaging disengaged readers, sustaining interest in reading in the transition from primary to secondary, and the importance of oracy in reading. Additionally, there is an exploration of the wider context of reading including international perspectives, new literacies and the importance of reading to personal development. Case studies and activities demonstrate practical applications with clear links to the underpinning theory, while critical reflections challenge the reader and encourage deeper thought about the chapter content.
