Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gripping portrait of environmental politics chronicles the devastating destruction of the Philippine countryside and reveals how ordinary men and women are fighting back. Traveling through a land of lush rainforests, the authors have recorded the experiences of the people whose livelihoods are disappearing along with their country's natural resources. The result is an inspiring, informative account of how peasants, fishers, and other laborers have united to halt the plunder and to improve their lives. These people do not debate global warming—they know that their very lives depend on the land and oceans, so they block logging trucks, protest open-pit mining, and replant trees. In a country where nearly two-thirds of the children are impoverished, the reclaiming of natural resources is offering young people hope for a future. Plundering Paradise is essential reading for anyone interested in development, the global environment, and political life in the Third World.

Book Rival Views of Market Society and Other Recent Essays

Download or read book Rival Views of Market Society and Other Recent Essays written by Albert O. Hirschman and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-twentieth century Albert O. Hirschman has been known for his innovative, lucid, and brilliantly argued contributions to economics, the history of ideas, and the social sciences. Two central and already widely admired essays in this collection explore new territory. The title essay distinguishes among four very different conceptions of the characteristics and dynamics of capitalist societies. A related plea for embracing complexity is made in "Against Parsimony," a wide-ranging critique of traditional economic models. In other writings Hirschman revisits his own views on economic development, the concept of interest, and the roles of "exit" and "voice" in economic and social systems. This volume reaffirms the powerful originality and enduring value of Hirschman's work.

  • Publisher : International Monetary Fund
  • Release : 1995-02-07
  • ISBN : 1451813317
  • Pages : 85 pages

Download or read book Fiji written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-02-07 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews economic developments in Fiji during 1990–95. The reorientation of policies, although incomplete, led to stronger growth of nontraditional exports and non-sugar manufacturing, and to a pickup in GDP growth to an average of 4.1 percent between 1988 and 1993. Fiscal deficits declined in the early 1990s, although often larger than budgeted, and the external current account progressively turned into a surplus position. Despite the actions undertaken, however, private investment did not recover from its slump in the late 1980s impeding the economy from fully exploiting its growth potential.

Book Export Catalysts in Low income Countries

Download or read book Export Catalysts in Low income Countries written by Yung W. Rhee and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant research is needed in the design and implementation of outward-looking development strategies, recognizing that the supply response must come from individual firms. However, in studying industrial development policy issues, one often become over-influenced by a preconceived model, leaving out the most critical aspect, i.e. real world experience in the intricacies of the industrial development process in low-income countries. The approach taken here gives the highest priority to finding the real stories on the development process at the firm or factory level. In all the cases reviewed, the most critical ingredient for successful entry in the international markets was nearly always the presence of foreign and/or domestic catalysts. The catalyst model of development that emerges from the analysis of eleven export success stories aims at providing feasible and practical answers to questions about workable development strategies for low-income countries. To that end, the catalyst model of development is a model for initiating and transmitting outward-oriented development and for sequencing realistic policy reforms, starting from "equal footing" export incentives, in parallel with increasing industrial competence gained through world market competition.

Book Special Economic Zones

Download or read book Special Economic Zones written by Thomas Farole and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For countries as diverse as China and Mauritius, Special Economic Zones (SEZs) have been a powerful tool to attract foreign investment, promote export-oriented growth, and generate employment; for many others, the results have been less than encouraging. While the benefits and limitations of zones will no doubt continue to be debated, what is clear is that policymakers are increasingly attracted to them as an instrument of trade, investment, industrial, and spatial policy. Since the mid 1980s, the number of newly-established zones has grown rapidly in almost all regions, with dramatic growth in developing countries. In parallel with this growth and in the evolving context of global trade and investment, zones are also undergoing significant change in both their form and function, with traditional export processing zones (EPZs) increasingly giving way to larger and more flexible SEZ models. This new context will bring significant opportunities for developing countries to take advantage of SEZs, but will also raise new challenges to their successful design and implementation. This volume aims to contribute to a better understanding of the role and practice of SEZs in developing countries, in order to better equip policymakers in making effective decisions in planning and implementing SEZ programs. It covers some of the emerging issues and challenges in SEZs – including upgrading, regional integration, WTO compliance, innovation, the environment, and gender issues – with practical case examples from SEZ programs in developing countries.

Book Labour Rights as Human Rights

Download or read book Labour Rights as Human Rights written by Philip Alston and published by Collected Courses of the Acade. This book was released on 2005 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are efforts to protect workers' rights compatible with the forces of globalization? How can minimum standards designed to protect labour rights be implemented in a world in which national labour law is more and more at the mercy of international forces beyond its control? And does it makeany difference if we see rights such as the right to freedom of association, to non-discrimination in the workplace, to freedom from child labour, and to safe and healthy working conditions in terms of international human rights law? Or are they more appropriately seen as 'principles' to bepromoted as and where appropriate? The contributors to this volume argue that international agreements and institutions are of central importance if labour rights are to be protected in a globalized economy. But the report cards they give to the World Trade Organization, the European Union, NAFTA, and the Free Trade Agreement of theAmericas are generally very critical. While there is a strong rhetorical commitment to labour rights, at least on the part of the US and the EU, the substance of what has been achieved to date is hardly impressive. The role of the International Labour Organization is central and the authorsexplore some of the options that are open to governments, civil society, and the labour movement in the years ahead.
