Book excerpt: The impact of Business Incubation and Entrepreneurial Orientation on the performance of Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) is seldom jointly tested, hence this study seeks to test the impact of Business Incubation and Entrepreneurial Orientation on SME performance. The research design adopted an analytical, deductive and quantitative approach over a cross-sectional time horizon, using primary data gathered from structured questionnaires. This study found that Business Incubation has a statistically significant impact on SME performance, while the positive impact of Entrepreneurial Orientation on SME performance was not statistically significant. The article proposes that policymakers should strengthen their efforts in supporting SMEs through business incubation.

Book excerpt: One of the main challenges in driving business development in developing countries is the lack of information for policy decision-making. The aim of this report is provide an analysis of the differences between survivalist and micro/very small enterprises using the Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) constructs, which are considered critical for business growth. The research also aims to validate findings of previous research into age and levels of education being a determining factor for business venture success. A structured questionnaire was used to gather data from 45 SMMEs. Parametric and non-parametric statistics were used to test for significant differences between means of the two SMME groups. The results revealed that competitive aggressiveness, which is positively associated with innovation and autonomy to be significantly different between the two SMME groups. The conclusion is that overall there is no significant difference in the level of EO between the two groups, but previous research has indicated that the interaction between the EO constructs are not yet fully understood. The research findings also did not support age being a factor in successful new venture formation, and but highlighted significant differences in levels of education between micro/ very small enterprises, in contrast with recent findings.

This research evaluated the effect on entrepreneurial orientation on the relationship of opportunity identification and enterprise growth. Data evaluated was collected through administering of questionnaires to 86 SMEs registered with the National Council for Construction (NCC). The outcome of this research has reviewed that there is a significant effect of Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) on Opportunity Identification (OI) and Enterprise Growth (EG) relationship of SMEs in Zambia. This has been supported by Wiklund (2005) who retaliated the fact that empirically, research has found that there is an influence of EO on enterprise growth.

Book excerpt: The business environment in South Africa (SA) is characterised by limited resources, high uncertainty and stiff competition which have contributed to the high level of unemployment in the country. The economy is generating few jobs. Across different spheres of society 0́3 academia, industry and government 0́3 emphasis is being placed on entrepreneurship and small businesses as drivers of economic growth and employment creation. Scholars of entrepreneurship have used entrepreneurial orientation (EO) widely to delineate firm-level entrepreneurial behaviour and intensity using the uni-dimensional and multi-dimensional conceptualisation. EO as a consolidated construct is confirmed to have a relationship with the performance of businesses. However, business performance does not translate into business growth nor is it the same as employment growth. It appears that the association between EO and employment growth has attracted less attention in research despite its importance to theory and practice. In addition, studies on the antecedents of EO 0́3 such as its relationship with task environment variables and its consequences on employment growth 0́3 are limited in SA. Hence this study examines the nexus between the environment, the sub-dimensions of EO and employment growth. It hypothesises relationships between two environmental variables: dynamism and hostility and five dimensions of EO: innovativeness, pro-activeness, risk-taking, competitive aggressiveness and autonomy. Similarly, it tests the relationships between these dimensions and employment growth; directly and as moderated by environmental dynamism and hostility. To a greater extent, it considers established SMMEs that have transited through the survival phase into the growth phase of business operation. Using a survey method, data is collected from small business across SA from which 1031 SMMEs were considered for statistical analysis and this entailed the use of descriptive techniques that measures central tendencies and inferential techniques such as correlation analysis factor analysis, regression analysis and partial-least-square structural equation modelling and graphical illustration with use of pie charts and bar charts. The sample consists of service and non-service sector businesses but professional and consulting services constitute close to a third of the sample. Findings from this study reveal that SMMEs in SA display a moderate to high EO and only four of its dimensions (proactive-innovation, risk-taking, competitive aggressiveness and autonomy) were visible statistically. Statistically significant relationships were found between environmental hostility and dynamism and the dimensions of EO for the entire sample. The relationships between the dimensions of EO and employment growth were statistically insignificant except for medium-sized businesses (MSBs) in which proactive-innovation and competitive aggressiveness indicated a statistically significant negative relationship with employment growth. In conclusion, this study contributes to the understanding of EO as a construct given that it considers the environment as its antecedent. It lays emphasis on the multi-variate relationships between environmental hostility, environmental dynamism, and each of the dimensions of EO. From a methodological perspective, this study employs an objective approach to measuring employment growth using Gibrat0́9s law. It demystifies the complex relationships between the business environment and the dimensions of EO and concomitantly sheds light on employment growth. It amplifies the role of the environment in small business development and identifies the dimensions of EO that could deemed relevant to employment generation. Finally, it advocates the need for context-specific entrepreneurial strategies to develop components of the SMME cohort and effective promotion of job creation.

Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. The manufacturing sector, as the backbone of the state’s economy, has and will continue to change in its nature and form. In effect, innovation relies on intersections between people, knowledge, information sharing, ideas, financial and other resources. Innovation happens through regional social and economic system dynamics; innovation relies on a system view of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship can be taken as a study of the entrepreneur and new business creation. However, this conception of entrepreneurship misses the critical link to economic outcomes; the ebb and flow of social and economic fortunes that are underpinned by the actions, reactions and engagement of individuals in a specific social and economic system that brings about innovation and change. In this book the authors are exploring how the linkages within the system can be conceptualised and made transparent.
