To identify all the sources of information, and to list documents that discuss research on teachers’ attitudes. Book A Comparative Study of the Reaction Patterns of the Anglo Student Teacher Toward Anglo and Mexican Elementary School Stduents

Download or read book A Comparative Study of the Reaction Patterns of the Anglo Student Teacher Toward Anglo and Mexican Elementary School Stduents written by Jo Ann Vasquez and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the reaction patterns of the Anglo student teacher toward Anglo and Mexican American elementary school students. The author sought to answer the following questions: To what extent do Anglo student teachers recall classroom interactions with Anglo students compared with Mexican American students? How do Anglo student teachers perceive their own feeling regarding these interactions? Do differences exist in the amount of student teacher praising, encouraging, and helping given to Mexican American as compared with Anglo students? Do differences exist in the amount of disciplinary actions directed toward Mexican American and Anglo students? What types of deficiencies does the Anglo student teacher perceive in Mexican American and Anglo students? In what circumstances does the Anglo student teacher feel avoided or rejected by Mexican American and Anglo students? Do interactions with Mexican American and Anglo student differ according to the subject matter being studied? Does the Anglo student teacher feel differently toward helping or directing the Mexican American and Anglo student in learning activities? Fifteen Anglo student teachers, who were unaware that a comparative study would be made, were trained in the use of a modified Flanders system of classroom interaction analysis. This system focused on interaction variables which involved teacher praise, help, encouragement, frustration, rejection, and student deficiencies in English and mathematics. The results of this study showed that the student teachers recorded statistically significant more interactions with Anglo students than with Mexican American students. In the interactions which were categorized as “working with” individual students, the student teachers assigned significantly more positive rating to Anglo students than with Mexican American students. In the interactions which were categorized as “working with” individual students, the student teachers assigned significantly more positive rating to Anglo students than to Mexican American students. The student teachers recorded more “praising” and “helping” interactions with Anglo students, but more “encouraging” interactions with Mexican American students although not at a significant level. Student teachers perceived Mexican American students as being more deficient in English skills than Anglo students. Other finding which did not have statistical significance, but which are correlative with this study’s finding and that of other research, indicated more feelings of frustration, rejection, and avoidance when the student teachers interacted with the Mexican American student as compared to the Anglo student. The conclusions derived from this study indicate that Mexican American elementary students tend not to have as many positive interactions in the classroom with Anglo student teachers as do Anglo students, and that, generally, Mexican American students are not praised and helped as much as Anglo students. These disparities in the classroom behavior of the student teacher toward Mexican American and Anglo students are likely to be contributing factors in the Mexican American’s poor educational achievement and low grade level attainment.
