Download or read book Population Trends of Blackbirds and Starlings in North America 1966 76 written by Richard A. Dolbeer and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We used the North American Breeding Bird Survey to estimate trends of red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus), common grackles (Quiscalus quiscula), brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater), and starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) for 1966-76 in the United States and Canada. Extended to a continental scale, the survey indicated significant increases in the mean number of redwings, cowbirds, and starlings observed per route. Starlings had the greatest increase, 4.96 birds per route or a 19.4% increase. The starlings' greatest regional increases occurred in the western United States. Populations of redwings increased most in the St. Lawrence Valley and parts of the Midwest and Lower Plains regions. Cowbirds increased the most in the plains from Iowa to Saskatchewan and decreased over parts of the eastern and midwestern United States. Grackle populations indicated no change on a continental scale but did show strong increases in the Midwest and Lower Plains regions and declines in Appalachia. This knowledge of blackbird and starling population trends in specific areas should improve our ability to understand increasing bird-man conflicts, to evaluate proposed bird-damage control strategies, and to develop more effective, long-term solutions than are available at present.

Download or read book Granivorous Birds in Ecosystems written by Jan Pinowski and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 1977. It deals with the importance of weed seed and grain-eating birds in natural and agricultural environments. These birds are to be found worldwide and are a component of man-made ecosystems where they are associated with man's main food crops. An analysis is made of their evolution and genetics, population dynamics, energy and food requirements, impact on ecosystems and control. Principles, procedures and basic data are presented that can be applied to the evaluation and control of pest species anywhere in the world. In this synthesis volume full use is made of the systems approach, the ecological and evolutionary aspects of the study are integrated. In linking the studies with fundamental work on bioenergetics, new insights are provided into the behavioural and applied aspects of granivory. Studies which encompass archaeological and anthropological investigations form a backcloth for the detailed interpretation of the population biology and bioenergetics of birds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In A Natural History of the Chicago Region, Greenberg takes you on a journey that begins with European explorers and settlers and hasn't ended yet. Along the way he introduces you to the physical forces that have shaped the area from southeastern Wisconsin to northern Indiana and Berrien County in Michigan; the various habitat types present in the region and how European settlement has affected them; and the insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and mammals found in presettlement times, then amid the settlers and now amid the skyscrappers. In all, Greenberg chronicles the development of nineteen counties in Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin across centuries of ecological, technological, and social transformations."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Avian Ecology and Conservation in an Urbanizing World written by John M. Marzluff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most striking and persistent ways humans dominate Earth is by changing land-cover as we settle a region. Much of our ecological understanding about this process comes from studies of birds, yet the existing literature is scattered, mostly decades old, and rarely synthesized or standardized. The twenty-seven contributions authored by leaders in the fields of avian and urban ecology present a unique summary of current research on birds in settled environments ranging from wildlands to exurban, rural to urban. Ecologists, land managers, wildlife managers, evolutionary ecologists, urban planners, landscape architects, and conservation biologists will find our information useful because we address the conservation and evolutionary implications of urban life from an ecological and planning perspective. Graduate students in these fields also will find the volume to be a useful summary and synthesis of current research, extant literature, and prescriptions for future work. All interested in human-driven land-cover changes will benefit from a perusal of this book because we present high altitude photographs of each study area.
