Book Attitudes Towards Care of Dying Patients Among Sophomore Junior and Senior Pre licensure Nursing Students at a Christian University While Controlling for Religiosity

Download or read book Attitudes Towards Care of Dying Patients Among Sophomore Junior and Senior Pre licensure Nursing Students at a Christian University While Controlling for Religiosity written by Diane Bridge and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a need for nurses who can effectively care for dying patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of nursing students towards providing care of dying patients while controlling for religiosity. The study used a quantitative causal-comparative research design using two administered questionnaires, the Frommelt’s Attitudes Towards Care of the Dying (FATCOD B) and the Duke University Religion Index (DUREL). A convenience sample of 417 residential undergraduate nursing students were used in this study. The sample consisted of 137 sophomore, 142 junior, and 138 senior pre-licensure nursing students who attended a large Christian university located in the southeastern region of the United States. Using data that were collected from the questionnaires, the Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) was utilized to analyze research data. The null hypothesis was rejected indicating that a statistically significant difference does exist in attitudes towards care of dying patients between sophomore, junior, and senior nursing students at a Christian university while controlling for religiosity. Based upon results from the research study, students with more clinical hours and nursing training had a more positive attitude towards care of dying patients. Recommendations for future research includes consideration of additional variables that might influence nursing students’ attitudes towards care of dying patients in nursing programs at Christian and secular universities.

Book Cultural Changes in Attitudes Toward Death Dying and Bereavement

Download or read book Cultural Changes in Attitudes Toward Death Dying and Bereavement written by Cynthia A. Peveto, PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2004-11-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By comparing the findings from Kalish's and Reynolds's landmark 1970's Death and Ethnicity Study to their own present study, Hayslip and Peveto examine the impact of cultural change on death attitudes. With a focus on African-American, Asian-American, and Hispanic-American subpopulations, with Caucasians treated as a comparison group, the authors come to several conclusions, including: the shift toward more interest in being informed of one's own terminal prognosis a more personal approach to funerals and mourning observances a greater focus on family and relationships

Book A Comparison of Oncology Nurses and Non oncology Nurses Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Patient

Download or read book A Comparison of Oncology Nurses and Non oncology Nurses Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Patient written by Kathleen Mastice and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if oncology nurses' attitudes toward care of the dying patient and their family differ from that of non-oncology nurses. A convenience sample of thirty subjects participated in this study. This sample consisted of fifteen registered nurses whose orientation was oncology in clinical practice and fifteen registered nurses whose orientation was medical / surgica1 in clinical practice. Criteria for inclusion in this voluntary study was that each respondent would have worked within their present unit for the past six months. Respondents who had recently sustained the loss of a spouse, child, parent, or sibling were eliminated from the study. The sample was obtained from a four hundred bed not-for-profit hospital located in Plainfield, New Jersey. Data was collected using a demographic data sheet and the Frommelt Attitudes Toward Care of the Dying Scale. The research design was a non-experimental descriptive study. The theoretical framework utilized was Corr's Task-Based Approach to Coping with Dying. The dependent variable was nurses' attitude toward the dying patient. The independent variable was the type of clinical unit they practiced on. A 1-test was computed to determine if a significant difference in attitudes was noted between the two groups of nurses utilizing a p value of .05. Oncology nurses scored significantly higher than non-oncology nurses, reflecting a more positive attitude towards care of the dying patient and their family. This study supports the need for increased emphasis on nurses' attitudes toward care of the dying and the need for an accent on death education in nursing curricula.

Download or read book Approaching Death written by Committee on Care at the End of Life and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-10-30 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the end of life makes its inevitable appearance, people should be able to expect reliable, humane, and effective caregiving. Yet too many dying people suffer unnecessarily. While an "overtreated" dying is feared, untreated pain or emotional abandonment are equally frightening. Approaching Death reflects a wide-ranging effort to understand what we know about care at the end of life, what we have yet to learn, and what we know but do not adequately apply. It seeks to build understanding of what constitutes good care for the dying and offers recommendations to decisionmakers that address specific barriers to achieving good care. This volume offers a profile of when, where, and how Americans die. It examines the dimensions of caring at the end of life: Determining diagnosis and prognosis and communicating these to patient and family. Establishing clinical and personal goals. Matching physical, psychological, spiritual, and practical care strategies to the patient's values and circumstances. Approaching Death considers the dying experience in hospitals, nursing homes, and other settings and the role of interdisciplinary teams and managed care. It offers perspectives on quality measurement and improvement, the role of practice guidelines, cost concerns, and legal issues such as assisted suicide. The book proposes how health professionals can become better prepared to care well for those who are dying and to understand that these are not patients for whom "nothing can be done."
