Book Identifying Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Sexual Expression Among Selected 65 to 74 Year Olds Utilizing a Structured Interview

Download or read book Identifying Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Sexual Expression Among Selected 65 to 74 Year Olds Utilizing a Structured Interview written by Margaret Mary Smith and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two major purposes of this study were to gather data relative to the knowledge and attitudes toward sexual expression among sixty-five to seventy-four year olds and to determine whether or not significant differences existed between the sexes. The study focused on six research questions: These were: 1. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of overall knowledge related to sexual expression? 2. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of specific knowledge categories related to sexual expression? 3. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of overall attitudes related to sexual expression? 4. Do older females and males differ significantly in terms of specific attitude categories related to sexual expression? 5. Are there significant differences between older females and males in terms of overall knowledge when they are grouped according to: marital status, education, religious attendance, self perceived health status and occupation? 6. Are there significant differences between older females and males in terms of overall attitudes when they are grouped according to: marital status, education, religious attendance, self perceived health status and occupation? The population selected for study was a voluntary organization of older adults, who resided in Marion County, Oregon. Thirty-two members, ages sixty-five to seventy-four who volunteered to participate in this study comprised the sample. A structured interview guide was utilized for data collection. Validity of the instrument was established through input from professional experts. Reliability was determined by comparing consistency of responses between three groups: a pilot test group, one in-study group matched to the pilot group and one in-study group selected at random. Both parametric and non-parametric statistical tools were used to analyze the data. These included the t test for research question one; Mann Whitney U for research questions two through four; the f test for research question five; and Chi Square for research question six. Although some minor differences were found to exist between males and females in terms of knowledge and attitudes regarding sexual expression, the differences were not found to be significant at the.05 level. Results of the study indicated the existence of misinformation, conflicting attitudes, and the desire for sexuality information by older adults. Because the sample in this study was found to be non-representative of the general older population, results may not be generalizable. Summaries of personal characteristics and self perception can be located in Tables 7 and 8. Suggestions for future replications of the study are made. Recommendations and implications for educators and service providers who work with older adults are also included.

Book Differences in attitudes between younger and older people toward old age Implications for counselling

Download or read book Differences in attitudes between younger and older people toward old age Implications for counselling written by Tak Ming Yu and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject Sociology - Old Age, grade: Distinction, , course: Master of Social Science in Counselling, language: English, abstract: The main purpose of this study was to examine the general public’s perception on older people. Based on this theme, five research questions were identified. 1) What are the attitudes of younger and older people toward elderly?, 2) Are older peoples’ attitudes toward themselves being influenced by prevailing ageism views?, 3) What are the predictors of ageism?, 4) Do the interaction between younger and older people influences the attitudes toward older people?, and 5) What are the implications of the above research findings toward older people for counselling?. Based on these questions, five hypotheses were developed. No significant difference was found between the attitudes of younger and older people toward the latter. In terms of concept and image about older people, older people tend to see themselves more negative than younger people. People with higher educational levels, younger age and religion tend to score a higher value of FAQ than people with lower educational levels, older age and non-religious. People with higher educational levels, younger age and religion tend to form more positive image toward older people than people with low lower educational levels, older age and non-religious. People with more interaction with older adults tend to have higher scores on FAQ. Basically all the hypotheses were rejected, but this study did make several contributions to the study of ageism in Hong Kong. First, this study found that attitudes of younger students toward older adults were more negative than older people. Students’ attitudes toward older people were dominated by negative ageism views and image; whereas, older peoples’ attitudes toward older adults were mixed with both negative and positive ageism views. It was suggested in this study, attitudes of people toward older adults have to be analyzed from three perspectives, namely ageism, image about older people and attitudes toward caring in order to generate more precise pictures about ageism. Finally, the study suggested that education, intergenerational activities and positive ageing programs could be used to reduce ageism in our societies.

Book Young Adults Attitudes Toward Older Adults

Download or read book Young Adults Attitudes Toward Older Adults written by Michael J. Malec and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research area of attitudes toward older adults is becoming increasingly relevant. This is because of the prevalence of ageism and the approaching senescence of the U.S. "baby boom" generation. In this study, the young adult/"most familiar" older adult relationship and its influence on a young adult's attitudes toward older adults in general (i.e., all individuals 65 years and older) is examined. In this study, 171 male and female college students between the ages of 18 and 35 completed a questionnaire assessing the quality of contact and quantity of contact in a young adult's relationship with a "most familiar". The young adult's attitudes toward the "most familiar" and his/her attitudes toward older adults in general, were also assessed using the 32-item Aging Semantic Differential (ASD). A second self-report instrument, the 17-item Miller Social Intimacy Scale, was used to assess the degree of social intimacy experienced in the older adult relationship. Social intimacy is a specific type of intimacy which is described as being similar to friendship. Respondents were also asked to provide information regarding their age, race, gender, and any co-residency experience with older adults. Regression analysis and t-test results ultimately revealed that social intimacy (one aspect of quality of contact) was a significant predictor of a person's attitudes toward a specific familiar older adult. Significance was also found in the associations between social intimacy and attitudes toward the large out-group, older adults in general. Results also indicated that quantity of contact and a young adult's race are significant in predicting attitudes toward older adults in general.
