Book Inscriptional Evidence of Pre Islamic Classical Arabic

Download or read book Inscriptional Evidence of Pre Islamic Classical Arabic written by Saad D. Abulhab and published by Blautopf Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses a highly-debated research topic regarding the history of the Arabic language. It investigates exhaustively the ancient roots of Classical Arabic through detailed tracings and readings of selected ancient inscriptions from the Northern and Southern Arabian Peninsula. Specifically, this book provides detailed readings of important Nabataean, Musnad, and Akkadian inscriptions, including the Namarah inscription and the Epic of Gilgamesh. In his book, the author, a known Arabic type designer and independent scholar, provides clear indisputable transcriptional material evidence indicating Classical Arabic was utilized in major population centers of the greater Arabian Peninsula, many centuries before Islam. He presents for the first time a new clear reading of Classical Arabic poetry verses written in the Nabataean script and dated to the first century CE. Furthermore, he offers for the first time a clear detailed Classical Arabic reading of a sample text from two ancient editions of the Mesopotamian Epic of Gilgamesh, separated by more than1000 years. Throughout his readings, the author provides verifiable evidence from major historical Arabic etymological dictionaries, dated many centuries ago. The abundant of in-depth analysis, images, and detailed original tables in this book makes it a very suitable reference for both scholars and students in academic and research institutions, and for independent learners.

Book Petra and the Nabataeans

Download or read book Petra and the Nabataeans written by Gregory A. Crawford and published by ATLA Bibliography Series. This book was released on 2003 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an unknown period before the time of Christ to the fifth century A.D., a civilization existed in the dry deserts of Jordan. While many impressive remains of this civilization have been found, especially the stone-carved tombs and temples of Petra, relatively little is actually known of the people we call the Nabataeans. Not only have they left no written history, except inscriptions, few historians actually mention their existence. This Bibliography attempts to pull together from widely disparate sources the literature of research on the Nabataeans, and especially on Petra, their capital. While the main focus of the bibliography is the time period of the Nabataeans, many articles, books, and chapters on Petra and its environs are included even if they discuss periods outside this time frame, including the Stone Age, the Roman period, the Islamic era, and the Crusades. In addition, writings on the Edomites, the predecessors of the Nabataeans, are also included. Entries are listed alphabetically by author and then by date. Indexes by subject scheme as well as a comprehensive index to the authors and editors round out this useful reference work.

Book Studies in Aramaic Inscriptions and Onomastics

Download or read book Studies in Aramaic Inscriptions and Onomastics written by Edward Lipiński and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1975 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The description, location, chronology, and nature of the bilingual archive from Ma'lana, called Ma'allanate by Assyriologists, is followed by the up-dated analysis of all the Aramaic texts and epigraphs, as well as of the proper names, occurring there or related to them. This material, so far scattered in a dozen of different publications, is now collected and reorganized in four chapters. All the texts dealt with date to ca. 700-620 B.C., from the office tenure of Hadddiy, the palace prefect of Queen Naqi'a/Zakutu, to the time of Sehr-nuri under the reign of Sîn-sarra-iskun. These chapters are followed by a palaeographic study of the inscriptions, presented with facsimiles, a detailed grammatical analysis, and a study of the legal contents of the deeds in light of parallel documents. There follow indices of proper names, subjects treated, sources used, and modern authors. A list of illustrations completes the volume.

Book Law and Religion between Petra and Edessa

Download or read book Law and Religion between Petra and Edessa written by John Healey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thousands of surviving inscriptions in Middle Aramaic (e.g., in the Nabataean, Syriac and Palmyrene dialects) are an underused resource in the study of the Near East in the Roman period, especially in the study of religion and law. Particularly important was the emergence during this period of new peoples with their cultural roots in Arabia, such as the Nabataeans. This volume collects together, under the interrelated themes of religion and law, twenty-three articles by John Healey, with sections on "Petra and Nabataean Aramaic", "Edessa and Early Syriac" and "Aramaic and Society in the Roman Near East". Individual papers discuss the continuation of "Ancient Near Eastern" culture, the Aramaic legal tradition as well as the development of both written and spoken forms of Syriac and Nabatean.

Book Before the God in This Place for Good Remembrance

Download or read book Before the God in This Place for Good Remembrance written by Anne Katrine de Hemmer Gudme and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores Yahwistic votive practice in the Hellenistic period. The dedicatory inscriptions from the Yahweh temple on Mount Gerizim are the object of an investigation of Yahwistic votive practice, witnessed in and outside Biblical literature. The research begins the discussion by placing votive practice in a theoretical framework of gift-giving and fills a scholarly void by establishing this practice as an integral part of the sacrificial system in the Hebrew Bible. The Gerizim inscriptions are then analysed in their proper archaeological and religio-historical context.
