Book excerpt: A review of the results obtained when a variety of new techniques for the analysis of the way a person perceives his social environment is applied to the comparison of two cultural groups, reveals some basic similarities in the obtained results. The various methods give complementary information. The data were obtained from studies of 'the subjective culture' of Americans and Greeks. Comparable instruments were administered to the two cultural groups and the results are presented in terms of the differences between American and Greek perceptions of social reality. The analysis of subjective culture is likely to help in the understanding of transcultural conflict, as well as in the development of theory concerning interpersonal attitudes, interpersonal behavior, and conflict resolution. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978, Subjective Meaning and Culture presents a framework and a method for the comparative study of the perceptions, attitudes, and cultural frames of reference shared by groups of people. The framework is the notion of subjective meaning, and the method is that of word associations. The authors present a detailed account of some particular cross-cultural and intergroup comparisons using the word-association technique described in this volume. However, rather than emphasize comparisons they focus on the technique itself as a method in the investigation of subjective meaning and with it subjective culture. Their purpose was to introduce a research capability which offered new kinds of information and made critical aspects of subjective meaning accessible to empirical investigation. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

The first study involved a comparative analysis of the groups' subjective culture performed by two methods: word-stimulated and picture-stimulated associations. The second study explored the utility of word- and picture-stimulated associations in assessing the effects of communications---editorials and films---on U.S. and Puerto Rican groups. Before and after the presentation of the selected editorial or film, associations were obtained to indicator stimuli---key themes and pictures strategically chosen from the selected piece of communication.
