Download or read book Operating Systems written by Dionysios C. Tsichritzis and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operating Systems deals with the fundamental concepts and principles that govern the behavior of operating systems. Many issues regarding the structure of operating systems, including the problems of managing processes, processors, and memory, are examined. Various aspects of operating systems are also discussed, from input-output and files to security, protection, reliability, design methods, performance evaluation, and implementation methods. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of what constitutes an operating system, followed by a discussion on the definition and properties of the basic unit of computation within an operating system, the process. The reader is then introduced to processor allocation schemes as well as various classes of scheduling disciplines and their implementations; memory management functions; and virtual memory. Subsequent chapters focus on input-output and files; protection in an operating system; and design and implementation of an operating system. The book concludes by describing two operating systems to help the reader visualize how the major components of a system interact in a complete system: the Venus Operating System developed by MITRE Corp. and the SUE nucleus, designed at the University of Toronto. This monograph is intended for fourth-year undergraduates and first-year graduate students, as well as lecturers who plans to institute a course on operating systems.

Download or read book Handbook of Scheduling written by Joseph Y-T. Leung and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-04-27 with total page 1215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers in management, industrial engineering, operations, and computer science have intensely studied scheduling for more than 50 years, resulting in an astounding body of knowledge in this field. Handbook of Scheduling: Algorithms, Models, and Performance Analysis, the first handbook on scheduling, provides full coverage of the most recent and advanced topics on the subject. It assembles researchers from all relevant disciplines in order to facilitate cross-fertilization and create new scheduling insights. The book comprises six major parts, each of which breaks down into smaller chapters: · Part I introduces materials and notation, with tutorials on complexity theory and algorithms for the minimization of makespan, total completion time, dual objectives, maximum lateness, the number of late jobs, and total tardiness. · Part II is devoted to classical scheduling problems. · Part III explores scheduling models that originate in computer science, operations research, and management science. · Part IV examines scheduling problems that arise in real-time systems, focusing on meeting hard deadline constraints while maximizing machine utilization. · Part V discusses stochastic scheduling and queueing networks, highlighting jobs that are not deterministic. · Part VI covers applications, discussing scheduling problems in airline, process, and transportation industries, as well as in hospitals and educational institutions.

Book Performance Analysis of Disk Scheduling Mechanisms with Long range Dependent Access Requests

Download or read book Performance Analysis of Disk Scheduling Mechanisms with Long range Dependent Access Requests written by John Michael Schreiber and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we will analyze the performance of disk scheduling algorithms such as shortest seek time first (SSTF) with access requests exhibiting behavior consistent with long-range dependent autocorrelation, sometimes called self-similar behavior. The concept of self-similar accesses has changed the way performance models are organized, conducted, and evaluated. While disk scheduling mechanics and algorithms have been studies extensively, the access arrival streams are assumed to be Poisson of normally distributed, and not long-range dependent. Our study examines the performance of a modern disk under loads that vary only in their degree of auto-correlation and utilization levels. We will examine several of the conventional scheduling algorithms under these varying load conditions and then compare the various levels of access arrivals with performance under random arrivals. We will use a modeler called DiskSim 3.0, which allows performance features of a specific disk to be reproduced in great detail. We will discuss DiskSim in greater detail later in this study.

Download or read book Real Time Database Systems written by Kam-Yiu Lam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-18 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, tremendous research has been devoted to the design of database systems for real-time applications, called real-time database systems (RTDBS), where transactions are associated with deadlines on their completion times, and some of the data objects in the database are associated with temporal constraints on their validity. Examples of important applications of RTDBS include stock trading systems, navigation systems and computer integrated manufacturing. Different transaction scheduling algorithms and concurrency control protocols have been proposed to satisfy transaction timing data temporal constraints. Other design issues important to the performance of a RTDBS are buffer management, index accesses and I/O scheduling. Real-Time Database Systems: Architecture and Techniques summarizes important research results in this area, and serves as an excellent reference for practitioners, researchers and educators of real-time systems and database systems.
