Book A Comparative Analysis of Humpback Whale Songs Recorded in Pelagic Waters of the Eastern North Pacific

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of Humpback Whale Songs Recorded in Pelagic Waters of the Eastern North Pacific written by Thomas F. Norris and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparative analysis of humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) songs recorded in the eastern North Pacific was performed in order to assess the feasibility of using songs to determine the stock and breeding area identity of migrating whales. Acoustic recordings were made in spring 1997 throughout temperate and subtropical waters of the eastern North Pacific during a marine mammal research cruise (SWAPS) and at the Revillagigedo Archipelago, Mexico during a separate investigation of humpback whales. Songs were analyzed from samples recorded at three distinct pelagic regions of the SWAPS cruise: 1) approximately 2000 km "E of Hawaii; 2) approximately 1200 km west of San Francisco, California; and 3) approximately 1400 km west of San Diego, CA. These samples were compared to songs recorded during a coincident period at Socorro Island, a humpback whale breeding area in the Mexican Pacific. More than 400 phrases were extracted, qualitatively categorized, and compared. Nine unique phrase types were identified from the Mexican sample of which eight were also identified from the two pelagic samples recorded off California. Reliable comparisons among the four regions sampled were problematic, primarily due to the poor quality of most recordings made during the SWAPS cruise. For future work, we recommend a dedicated effort to obtain high quality recordings of songs for all geographic areas to be compared. Furthermore, songs from respective breeding areas should be characterized quantitatively before proceeding with comparative analyses. In the near future, rapid advances in digital signal processing technology and worldwide deployments of acoustic monitoring equipment should make it more practical to use songs as an indicator of stock and breeding area identity. However, at present there other more efficient and reliable methods of accompiishing these goals.

Book Distribution of Calling Blue Fin and Humpback Whales in the North Pacific

Download or read book Distribution of Calling Blue Fin and Humpback Whales in the North Pacific written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seasonal distribution of calling blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) and fin whales (B. physalus), and singing humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) has been analyzed from acoustic data recorded by U.S. Navy Sound Surveillance System (SOSUS) and other hydrophone arrays in the North Pacific. The data from ten arrays were selected as representative of four Regions along the continental margins, labeled Northwest (NW), Northcentral (NC), Northeast (NE), and Southeast (SE). The call data indicate that there is a substantial population of blue whales scattered over the North Pacific and concentrated during the Fall season in the NW and NC Regions. Blue whale calls are recorded in all seasons, particularly in these NW and NC Regions. Fin whales are found in groups but also in relatively large numbers in all Regions, with most calling in the Winter season and in the NC Region, and calling is absent in most Regions during Summer. Fin whale calling includes "F" calls from individuals heard in all seasons and "J" calls from too many whales to separate, particularly prominent in the winter reproductive season. Humpback singing is recorded most in the NC and SE Regions at the time of their Winter/Spring migration. The distribution of singing humpbacks changed in both the NC and SE Regions between the 1996-1997 and 1998-2000 periods.

Book Behavioral Physical and Acoustic Characteristics of Humpback Whales Megaptera Novaeangliae at Argus Island

Download or read book Behavioral Physical and Acoustic Characteristics of Humpback Whales Megaptera Novaeangliae at Argus Island written by Coleman Levenson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the behavioral, physical, and acoustic characteristics of humpback whales was conducted at Argus Island Tower near Bermuda during April 1968. Swimming and diving habits were observed and photographed, and underwater sounds produced by the whales were recorded. Whale behavior at the surface prior to diving varied according to the time span of the succeeding dives. Information concerning the range of variation in physical appearance was sufficient to improve the quality of current visual identification aids. Preliminary analysis of humpback sounds indicates components at frequencies as high as 8kHz. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Thousand Mile Song, musician and philosopher David Rothenberg uses the enigma of whale sounds to explore whether we can truly understand nonhuman minds. Interviewing scholars around the world as they attempt to decipher underwater music, Rothenberg tells the story of scientists and artists confronting an unknown as vast as the ocean. Along the way, he plays his clarinet live with whales in their native habitats, from Russia to Hawaii, making interspecies music that appears on the included CD. Richly detailed and deeply entertaining, Thousand Mile Song is an imaginative look at the most intriguing creatures of the ocean.

Book HUMPBACK WHALE SINGING BEHAVIOUR IN THE WESTERN NORTH ATLANTIC

Download or read book HUMPBACK WHALE SINGING BEHAVIOUR IN THE WESTERN NORTH ATLANTIC written by Katie Kowarski and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) is a valuable tool to assess the distribution, habitat use, and behaviour of marine mammals including the acoustically prolific humpback whale. With increasing amounts of data collected, the challenge of effectively mining PAM data for signals of interest and interpreting those signals is faced by researchers globally. I completed a literature review on the data analysis methods employed in PAM baleen whale studies (2000-2019) before exploring the dynamic and complex humpback repertoire, which is particularly challenging for PAM. The review revealed a spectrum of methodologies ranging from full manual data analysis by a human to fully automated techniques. I propose recommendations for future work to encourage the application of best practices that will result in more robust and comparable research. Humpback whale vocalizations have been studied for years, but little is known of when, where, and how seasonal male singing begins in the fall and ends in the spring. Acoustic recordings of humpback whale vocalizations from Canada, the U.S.A, and the Caribbean in 2015-2017 were manually analysed. Humpback whales were present from Labrador to Massachusetts Bay during the fall and early winter. Song development occurred gradually over weeks with vocalizations transitioning from non-song calls to song fragments to full songs. Initially sporadic in occurrence, singing began in September, but was not regularly heard until late October, when full songs were common. I found evidence that the onset of regular singing occurs earlier at lower latitudes, longer photoperiods, and higher temperatures. The theme order in early season full songs was variable, until December when theme order became more consistent with what was observed the previous spring. Dominican Republic breeding ground songs recorded in January and March were crystalized in terms of theme order. Song duration increased gradually through the breeding season. Spring song cessation was only captured at a single site/season in Canada and compared to song development, it was abrupt with few song fragments. These late season songs had consistent theme orders. I propose that the patterns observed here may in part be driven by physiological processes like those of songbirds.

Book Humpback Whale Megaptera Novaeangliae Numbers and Distribution on Their Summer Feeding Grounds of the Eastern Aleutian Islands

Download or read book Humpback Whale Megaptera Novaeangliae Numbers and Distribution on Their Summer Feeding Grounds of the Eastern Aleutian Islands written by Heather Elizabeth Riley and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In summer, Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) of the North Pacific stock feed in Alaska's nearshore waters. My research focused on the Bering Sea between Unimak and Samalga Pass with the objectives: 1) Estimate the number of humpback whales using the study area from 2001 through 2006; 2) Determine to what extent humpback whales exhibit site fidelity; 3) Describe the distribution of humpback whales and determine if depth, slope, and chlorophyll-a can predict the humpback whale presence. To investigate the degree to which whales return to the Eastern Aleutian summer feeding ground, 1,985 whale photographs were collected and an identity matrix was created; Humpback whales exhibited a 22 percent return rate with 181 whales out of 802 total whales seen in more than one year during the six year study. Program MARK (Mark and recapture parameter estimation) was used to estimate the number of humpback whales utilizing this area, resulting in an estimate of 500 to 1600 animals. Logistic regression and random forest classification determined that depth and longitude are significant predictors of humpback whale presence. These results support other studies in the Eastern Aleutians and North Pacific and further confirm the importance of oceanographic and biological features in concentrating prey and predicting humpback whale distribution"--Leaf iii.
