Book A Comparative Analysis of Current and Planned Small Arms Weapon Systems

Download or read book A Comparative Analysis of Current and Planned Small Arms Weapon Systems written by Shawn T. Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to determine which small weapon system provides the best value to the DoD by examining the background, capabilities, and cost of each one. The XM8 family of weapons is the proposed replacement for the M16A4 Rifle, the M4 Carbine, and the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). Each current weapon is compared to the planned replacement system to determine if the XM8 is a viable substitute for that system. Ultimately, the project will produce a candidate for the best value rifle system for the DoD. Chapter 2 presents the evolution of current individual soldier weapons and associated equipment, including performance characteristics and costs. These systems are the M16A4 Rifle, M4 Carbine, M249 SAW, AN/PAQ-4C and AN/PEQ-2A laser aiming lights, M68 reflex sight, and the M145 optical sight. Chapter 3 describes the two variants of the XM8 rifle system that are intended to replace current systems: the XM8 Carbine and the XM8 Designated Marksman Automatic Rifle (DMAR). For each variant the authors provide background information, origins of the system, performance characteristics, and cost. Chapter 4 consists of two quantitative performance analyses. The first analysis is the XM8 Carbine against the M4 Carbine and the M16A4 Rifle. The second analysis is the XM8 DMAR against the M249 SAW. Relevant performance variables analyzed were reliability, weight, suitability, lethality, and maintainability. The nonrelevant variables analyzed were laser aiming lights and optical sights, weapon length, security procedures, repair parts, and accuracy. Chapter 5 consists of two quantitative analyses: a comparison of individual weapon costs of the XM8 Carbine with the M16A4 Rifle and M4 Carbine, and a comparison of individual weapon costs of the XM8 DMAR with the M249 SAW. It also includes fielding costs for a Unit of Action (UA) from the 101st Infantry Division Air Assault per it's prescribed MTOR for current and planned systems.

Book Increasing Small Arms Lethality In Afghanistan Taking Back The Infantry Half Kilometer

Download or read book Increasing Small Arms Lethality In Afghanistan Taking Back The Infantry Half Kilometer written by Major Thomas P. Ehrhart and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations in Afghanistan frequently require United States ground forces to engage and destroy the enemy at ranges beyond 300 meters. These operations occur in rugged terrain and in situations where traditional supporting fires are limited due to range or risk of collateral damage. With these limitations, the infantry in Afghanistan require a precise, lethal fire capability that exists only in a properly trained and equipped infantryman. While the infantryman is ideally suited for combat in Afghanistan, his current weapons, doctrine, and marksmanship training do not provide a precise, lethal fire capability to 500 meters and are therefore inappropriate. Comments from returning non-commissioned officers and officers reveal that about fifty percent of engagements occur past 300 meters. The enemy tactics are to engage United States forces from high ground with medium and heavy weapons, often including mortars, knowing that we are restricted by our equipment limitations and the inability of our overburdened soldiers to maneuver at elevations exceeding 6000 feet. Current equipment, training, and doctrine are optimized for engagements under 300 meters and on level terrain There are several ways to extend the lethality of the infantry. A more effective 5.56-mm bullet can be designed which provides enhanced terminal performance out to 500 meters. A better option to increase incapacitation is to adopt a larger caliber cartridge, which will function using components of the M16/M4. The 2006 study by the Joint Service Wound Ballistics-Integrated Product Team discovered that the ideal caliber seems to be between 6.5 and 7-mm. This was also the general conclusion of all military ballistics studies since the end of World War I.

Book The U S China Military Scorecard

Download or read book The U S China Military Scorecard written by Eric Heginbotham and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A RAND study analyzed Chinese and U.S. military capabilities in two scenarios (Taiwan and the Spratly Islands) from 1996 to 2017, finding that trends in most, but not all, areas run strongly against the United States. While U.S. aggregate power remains greater than China’s, distance and geography affect outcomes. China is capable of challenging U.S. military dominance on its immediate periphery—and its reach is likely to grow in the years ahead.

Book Defence Industries in the 21st Century

Download or read book Defence Industries in the 21st Century written by Çağlar Kurç and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defence Industries in the 21st Century explores the transformation in the global defence industrial production through examining the interaction between international and domestic factors. With the global defence industry and arms market likely continue to expand and mature, the ways in which this progression could influence international politics remain obscure. In practice, as the contents of this book show, the defence industrial bases and arms export policies of emerging states display significant variance. This variance is the result of a unique balance between domestic and international factors that has shaped the defence industrialisation behaviour and policies of the less industrialised states. One of the most important conclusions of the book is that the interplay between domestic and international factors clearly influences the variation in the emerging states’ defence industrialisation policies, as well as their success or failure. While international factors create opportunities, they also limit the options available to emerging economies. Domestic factors also play an important role by shaping the policy choices of the states’ decision makers. Exploring the balance between international and domestic factors and the ways in which they influence defence industrialisation in emerging states, Defence Industries in the 21st Century will be of great interest to scholars of Defence Industries, Arms Manufacturing, and Defence, Strategic and Security Studies more generally. The chapters were originally published in Defence Studies, Comparative Strategy and All Azimuth.
