Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Supernova explosions are not only important to the ecology of the universe, seeding it, among other things, with the heavy elements necessary for the existence of life, but they are also a natural laboratory in which a host of unique physical phenomena occur. While still far from a complete understanding, scientists have made great advances during the last twenty-five years in understanding the nature and conse- quences of supernovae. This book presents the state of supernova studies at the beginning of the 1990's, as reported at a two-week meeting on the Santa Cruz campus of the University of California in July 1989 in- volving 177 astronomers and astrophysicists from 17 nations. The 110 papers contained in this volume report all aspects of the field - observations at all wavelengths from radio through gamma-rays, bolometric light curves and spectra, neutrino observations, the theory of stellar explosions, multidimensional models for mixing, nucleosynthesis calculations, synthetic spectral modeling, presupernova evolution, supernova remnants, supernova rates, supernovae as standard candles, the interaction of supernovae with their surroundings - and constitute the most comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of SN 1987A currently available. Astronomers and astronomy graduate students will find this an in valuable summary of the current state of supernova research. The informed layperson or undergraduate astronomy student will also find it a useful introduction and guide to the literature in the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bloodied and scattered but still unbroken, the Knights Corporealis have one last option left to stop Balavad from conquering Vinnr—they may have to destroy it themselves. Book Four, the final story in the epic fantasy adventure of The Shackled Verities, with magic, monsters, and a Cosmos-crossing quest. Ulfric and Symvalline narrowly survived Balavad’s attempt to take over the realm of Arc Rheunos, and now find some relief in seeing their daughter Isemay adopt a new life there. If their hopes are answered, it will be a safe one. But hope is a fickle thing. Jaemus Bardgrim, on the other hand, remains the Cosmos’s most reluctant hero. With the aid of someone quite unexpected, he resumes his quest to save Himmingaze from the Glister Cloud’s looming annihilation. Yet, none of them can escape the real threat. Vinnr, and one way or another the Great Cosmos, lies at destruction’s doorstep, approaching its final defeat by Balavad’s cruelest Ravener army of all, the enslaved people of Dyrrakium. In The Shackled Verities’ final story, the Knights Corporealis go to war against dragørs, Verities, and time itself. They and their few remaining allies must rally for one last fight against Balavad the usurper. Some do it for hope, some for family, some for redemption, but in the end, they all face one truth: a human life is no match for the eternal power of a celestial. If they are very, very lucky, one Knight's sacrifice may be. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of 'lfric of Eynsham (c.950-c.1010) are among the most important to survive from Anglo-Saxon England. He was shaped by tenth-century monastic reform, and his promotion of Old English was highly influential. His earliest known works, the Sermones Catholici (c.990-5), are adaptations of Latin texts rendered in Old English. The homilies draw on the gospels, saints' lives and other doctrinal themes. They were intended to be delivered over two years. This two-volume collection, first published between 1844 and 1846, contains transcriptions of the Old English texts with facing-page translations by Benjamin Thorpe (1781/2-1870). A well-respected scholar with a strong interest in promoting the study of Old English, Thorpe produced an important edition of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the Rolls Series (also reissued in this series). Volume 1 of the present work contains the sermons for the first year, focusing on important events in the church calendar.

Book The Oxford History of Life Writing Volume 1 The Middle Ages

Download or read book The Oxford History of Life Writing Volume 1 The Middle Ages written by Karen A. Winstead and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford History of Life-Writing: Volume 1: The Middle Ages explores the richness and variety of life-writing from late Antiquity to the threshold of the Renaissance. During the Middle Ages, writers from Bede to Chaucer were thinking about life and experimenting with ways to translate lives, their own and others', into literature. Their subjects included career religious, saints, celebrities, visionaries, pilgrims, princes, philosophers, poets, and even a few 'ordinary people.' They relay life stories not only in chronological narratives, but also in debates, dialogues, visions, and letters. Many medieval biographers relied on the reader's trust in their authority, but some espoused standards of evidence that seem distinctly modern, drawing on reliable written sources, interviewing eyewitnesses, and cross-checking their facts wherever possible. Others still professed allegiance to evidence but nonetheless freely embellished and invented not only events and dialogue but the sources to support them. The first book devoted to life-writing in medieval England, The Oxford History of Life-Writing: Volume 1: The Middle Ages covers major life stories in Old and Middle English, Latin, and French, along with such Continental classics as the letters of Abelard and Heloise and the autobiographical Vision of Christine de Pizan. In addition to the life stories of historical figures, it treats accounts of fictional heroes, from Beowulf to King Arthur to Queen Katherine of Alexandria, which show medieval authors experimenting with, adapting, and expanding the conventions of life writing. Though Medieval life writings can be challenging to read, we encounter in them the antecedents of many of our own diverse biographical forms-tabloid lives, literary lives, brief lives, revisionist lives; lives of political figures, memoirs, fictional lives, and psychologically-oriented accounts that register the inner lives of their subjects.
