Download or read book A Commentary on the Thirty Nine Articles written by T. P. Boultree and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Thirty-Nine Articles: Forming an Introduction to the Theology of the Church of England This work has at least been produced by a natural process. It originated, and has gradually assumed shape, out of a necessity which has long pressed upon the Author. Having been engaged for some years in teaching theology, he has sought in vain for a manual containing the definitions and terms of that science, and distinctly enunciating the received doctrines of the Church of England. The plan of this work is precisely that which is indicated by its title. It is meant to be an introduction to the Theology of the Church of England. We are so accustomed to magnify our own divisions, and our opponents so habitually mock them, that some may be inclined to doubt whether there is such a theology. The Author would be far from saying that our differences on the doctrine of justification and the nature and efficacy of the sacraments are trivial. But, setting aside those extremes which do not really belong to our Church, though they struggle to find foot-hold within her limits, it is believed that our differences are to say the least, very manageable, so long as they are discussed on the platform of Holy Scripture. Book On the Thirty Nine Articles

Download or read book On the Thirty Nine Articles written by Oliver O'Donovan and published by SCM Press. This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thirty-Nine Articles, together with the Book of Common Prayer, form the foundation of Anglican theology. Yet there are very few extended treatments of them. Oliver O'Donovan relates the Articles to the exhilarating and troubled century in which they took shape. He also shows how the distinctive insights and values of a past age relate to the demands of today's world. 'What I propose in this case - is not to talk solely about the Articles, but to talk about God, mankind (sic!), and redemption, the central matters of the Christian faith, and to take the Tudor authors with me as companions in discussion. Two voices will be speaking - each raising the questions that Christian faith in his time forces upon him.' Here is a new edition of his book on one of the key texts of Anglican identity by one of the UK's leading theologians. The book has been out of print for some time and there have been repeated calls for a new edition with a new introduction which engages with more recent developments and offers the text to a new generation.

Book Anglican Evangelicalism in Sydney 1897 to 1953

Download or read book Anglican Evangelicalism in Sydney 1897 to 1953 written by John A. McIntosh and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John McIntosh attempts to describe more accurately and completely the spectrum of Evangelicalism (Anglican) that three successive principals of Moore Theological College appropriated and taught in the period. Each was an outstanding graduate of Oxford, Cambridge, and Dublin, respectively. The study traces the circumstances of their appointment and seeks to define the convictions they held--against the background of challenges and changes to their Christian faith they faced in their day. A close examination of their published and unpublished literary oeuvre clears away misunderstandings and even misrepresentations of their thought and influence. In so doing it explains how it was that those Evangelicals in the diocese who adhered more closely to their Reformation tradition finally prevailed decisively over those who were Protestant but liberal.

Book Mrs Humphry Ward and Greenian Philosophy

Download or read book Mrs Humphry Ward and Greenian Philosophy written by Helen Loader and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Mary Ward’s distinctive insight into late-Victorian and Edwardian society as a famous writer and reformer, who was inspired by the philosopher and British idealist, Thomas Hill Green. As a talented woman who had studied among Oxford University intellectuals in the 1870s, and the granddaughter of Dr Arnold of Rugby, Mrs Humphry Ward (as she was best known) was in a unique position to participate in the debates, issues and events that shaped her generation; religious doubt and Christianity, educational reforms, socialism, women’s suffrage and the First World War. Helen Loader examines a range of biographical sources, alongside Mary Ward’s writings and social reform activities, to demonstrate how she expressed and engaged with Greenian idealism, both in theory and practice, and made a significant contribution to British Society.

Book excerpt: This book is a revival of The Thirty-Nine Articles of the Church of England, explained with an introduction by Edgar C.S. Gibson. The Articles themselves are the historically defining statements of doctrines and practices of the Church of England with respect to the controversies of the English Reformation. The Thirty-Nine Articles form part of the Book of Common Prayer used by both the Church of England and the Episcopal Church. They were finalised in 1571, and incorporated into the Book of Common Prayer. The book helped to standarize the English language, and was to have a lasting effect on religion in the United Kingdom, and elsewhere through its wide use
