Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Commentary on the Greek Text of the Epistles of Paul to the Thessalonians Thessalonica (oedaakom'xn) was formerly called Therma (oe'pw; or and the gulf on which it stood was named Therma/0218 Sinus, on account of the hot salt springs which abounded in the vicinity. Two earlier legendary names have been handed down, Emathia and Halia.1 The origin of the present name has been variously accounted for. According to Strabo,2 Therma was rebuilt by Cassander, who added to it the population of three small towns near it, and called it Thessalonica, after his wife, a daughter of Philip. Stephen of Byzantium records, that Philip himself bestowed the new appellation in honour of a victory gained by him over the Thessalonians; 3 while in the Etymologe'cum M agmom it is said that Philip gave the name in honour of his daughter whose mother had died in childbirth. Xerxes, according to Here dotes, paused at Therma, while his fleet cruised in the gulf, and his army lay at a short distance; and the town is men tioned by this early name twice at least in Greek history.5 But the more ancient names have long passed out of View. Book The Epistles to the Thessalonians

Download or read book The Epistles to the Thessalonians written by Charles A. Wanamaker and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1990 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters of Paul to the newly founded Christian community at Thessalonica hold a special place within the Christian tradition as possibly the earliest extant Christian writings. They are also of special interest not only for their theological value but for their sociological context. Among the communities established by Paul, the church at Thessalonica appears to have been the only one to have suffered serious external oppression. These two important epistles, then, speak uniquely to contemporary Christians living in a society often ideologically, if not politically, opposed to Christian faith. In this innovative commentary Charles A. Wanamaker incorporates what may be called a social science approach to the study of 1 and 2 Thessalonians, taking into full account the social context that gave rise to Paul's correspondence. While Wanamaker in no way ignores traditional historical-critical, linguistic, literary, and theological approaches to writing a commentary -- in fact, at several points he makes a significant contribution to the questions raised by traditional exegesis -- at the same time he goes beyond previous commentaries on the Thessalonian correspondence by taking seriously the social dimensions both of Christianity at Thessalonica and of the texts of 1 and 2 Thessalonians themselves. In blending traditional exegetical methods with this newer approach, Wanamaker seeks to understand Pauline Christianity at Thessalonica as a socio-religious movement in the first-century Greco-Roman world and attempts to grasp the social character and functions of Paul's letters within this context.A significant and original addition to the literature on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, this commentary will be valuable to scholars, pastors, and students alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary: On the Epistles of St. Paul to the Thessalonians This little circle of humble Christians quickly became as dear to Paul as the church of their fellow-macedonians at Philippi. He did not insist upon the position of preponderance which was his by right as an apostle of Christ, but chose to become just one of them, a babe in the midst of them. As a nurse cherishes her own children, so in his affection for them he gave them not only the gospel of God but his very self as well. Like as a father deals with his own children, so he urged each one of them, with a word of encouragement or a word of warning as the need might be, to walk worthily of God who calls them into his own kingdom and glory (i When he tried, in his first let ter to them, to put into words his love for those generous, afiec tionate, and enthusiastic workingmen, his emotion got the better of his utterance: Who is our hope or joy or crown to boast in - or is it not you too - in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Indeed, it is really you who are our glory and our joy (i It is not surprising that on his way to Corinth, and in Corinth, he received constantly oral reports from believers everywhere about their faith in God and their expectancy of the Advent of his Son from heaven (i And what he singles out for emphasis in his letters, their faith, hope, and love, their brotherly love and hospitality, their endurance under trial, and their exuberant joy in the Spirit, are probably just the qualities which characterised them from the beginning of their life in Christ.
