  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book Acharnians written by Aristophanes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristophanes is the only surviving representative of Greek Old Comedy, an exuberant form of festival drama which flourished in Athens during the fifth century BC. One of the most original playwrights in the entire Western tradition, his comedies are remarkable for their brilliant combination of fantasy and satire, their constantly inventive manipulation of language, and their use of absurd characters and plots to expose his society's institutions and values to the bracing challenge of laughter. This is the third and final volume of a new verse translation of the complete plays of Aristophanes. It contains four of his most overtly political plays: Acharnians, in which an Athenian farmer rebels against the city's war policies; Knights, a biting satire of populist demagogues; Wasps, whose main theme is the Athenian system of lawcourts; and Peace, in which escape from war is symbolized in images of rustic fertility and sensuality. The translation combines historical accuracy with a sensitive attempt to capture the rich dramatic and literary qualities of Aristophanic comedy. Each play is presented with a thought-provoking introduction and extensive editorial notes to accompany the vivid translations, balancing performability with faithfulness to the original.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knights of Aristophanes: With Notes Critical and Explanatory, Adapted to the Use of Schools and Universities That the most rash and presumptuous criticism ought to stand awed and abashed in the presence of a work emanating from the Deity himself, there can be no doubt; nor should there be a doubt, that something like a similar reverence is not unwisely applied to works of infinitely less moment in themselves than the sacred Volume, but still collaterally con nected with it: and hence apparently in great measure that style of criticism, which scholarship has more particularly adopted as her own - a Cautious and almost timid adherence to received texts - a jealousy of any style of annotation address ing itself more to the imagination than the judgment - a mi nuteness of observation which would elsewhere be intolerable, and an acknowledgment of obligation to predecessors for such (at first aspect) small aids, as in any other branch of literature would almost be ridiculous. Though the present writer does not feel himself obnoxious to all the charges implied in a departure from rules thus judi ciously laid down, - and in the works of many living scholars so admirably followed, - yet still he cannot but feel that he has sufficiently deviated from them to require some justification for so doing; and that justification he must endeavour to find, first in the general, and secondly in the personal nature of his task.
