Book excerpt: The objective of this work is to assess the performance of different combustion models in predicting turbulent nonpremixed combustion in conjunction with the k  turbulence model. The laminar flamelet, equilibrium chemistry, constrained equilibrium chemistry and flame sheet models are applied to simulate combustion in a CH4/H2 bluff-body flame experimentally studied by the University of Sydney. The computational results are compared to experimental values of mixture fraction, temperature and constituent mass fractions. The comparison shows that the laminar flamelet model performs better than other combustion models and mimics most of the significant features of the bluff body flame.

Book excerpt: This work examines the three main aspects of bluff-body stabilized flames: stationary combustion, lean blow-out, and thermo-acoustic instabilities. For the cases of stationary combustion and lean blow-out, an improved version of the Linear Eddy Model approach is used, while in the case of thermo-acoustic instabilities, the effect of boundary conditions on the predictions are studied. The improved version couples the Linear Eddy Model with the full-set of resolved scale Large Eddy Simulation equations for continuity, momentum, energy, and species transport. In traditional implementations the species equations are generally solved using a Lagrangian method which has some significant limitations. The novelty in this work is that the Eulerian species concentration equations are solved at the resolved scale and the Linear Eddy Model is strictly used to close the species production term. In this work, the improved Linear Eddy Model approach is applied to predict the flame properties inside the Volvo rig and it is shown to over-predict the flame temperature and normalized velocity when compared to experimental data using a premixed single step global propane reaction with an equivalence ratio of 0.65. The model is also applied to predict lean blow-out and is shown to predict a stable flame at an equivalence ratio of 0.5 when experiments achieve flame extinction at an equivalence ratio of 0.55. The improved Linear Eddy Model is, however, shown to be closer to experimental data than a comparable reactive flow simulation that uses laminar closure of the species source terms. The thermo-acoustic analysis is performed on a combustor rig designed at the Air Force Research Laboratory. The analysis is performed using a premixed single step global methane reaction for laminar reactive flow and shows that imposing a non-physical boundary condition at the rig exhaust will result in the suppression of acoustic content inside the domain and can alter the temperature contours in non-physical ways. It can be concluded from this work that it is important to include the proper exhaust configuration for reacting thermo-acoustic calculations so that non-physical boundary conditions do not compromise the solution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large eddy simulation (LES) model has been developed and validated for turbulent non-premixed and partially premixed combustion systems. LES based combustion modelling strategy has the ability to capture the detailed structure of turbulent flames and account for the effects of radiation heat loss. Effects of radiation heat loss ismodelled by employing an enthalpy-defect based non-adiabatic flamelet model (NAFM) in conjunction with a steady non-adiabatic flamelet approach. The steady laminar flamelet model (SLFM) is used with multiple flamelet solutions through thedevelopment of pre-integrated look up tables. The performance of the non-adiabatic model is assessed against experimental measurements of turbulent CH4/H2 bluff-body stabilized and swirl stabilized jet flames carried out by the University of Sydney combustion group. Significant enhancements in the predictions of mean thermal structure have been observed with both bluff body and swirl stabilized flames by the consideration of radiation heat loss through the non-adiabatic flamelet model. In particular, mass fractions of product species like CO2 and H2O have been improved with the consideration of radiation heat loss. From the Sydney University data the HM3e flame was also investigated withSLFM using multiple flamelet strategy and reasonably fair amount of success has been achieved. In this work, unsteady flamelet/progress variable (UFPV) approach based combustion model which has the potential to describe both non-premixed and partially premixed combustion, has been developed and incorporated in an in-house LES code. The probability density function (PDF) for reaction progress variable and scalardissipation rate is assumed to follow a delta distribution while mixture fraction takes the shape of a beta PDF. The performance of the developed model in predicting the thermal structure of a partially premixed lifted turbulent jet flame in vitiated co-flow has been evaluated. The UFPV model has been found to successfully predict the flame lift-off, in contrast SLFM results in a false attached flame. The mean lift-off height is however over-predicted by UFPV-? function model by ~20% for methane based flame and under-predicted by ~50% for hydrogen based flame. The form of thePDF for the reaction progress variable and inclusion of a scalar dissipation rate thusseems to have a strong influence on the predictions of gross characteristics of the flame. Inclusion of scalar dissipation rate in the calculations appears to be successful in predicting the flame extinction and re-ignition phenomena. The beta PDFdistribution for the reaction progress variable would be a true prospect for extending the current simulation to predict the flame characteristics to a higher degree.

An capability for unsteady flows is added to a sensitivity tool which numerically solves the continuous sensitivity equations. A feedback control law is implemented to control numerically an acoustic instability, which is modeled by coupling pressure and velocity perturbations at an inflow boundary condition. Axi-symmetric simulations are presented for the burner both without methane injection and with five injection locations. The computation is performed using a 12-specie methane/air chemistry model with finite-rate chemical kinetics. An experimental investigation is pursued of a circular bluff-body burner equipped with multiple fuel injectors. The axial injector is used as a pilot flame for premixed observations at equivalence ratios of 0.4 and 0.5.
