Book excerpt: Why do we still have nits? What exactly are 'purity rules'? And why have baths scarcely changed in 200 years? The long history of personal hygiene and purity is a fascinating subject that reveals how closely we are linked to our deeper past. In this pioneering book, Virginia Smith covers the global history of human body-care from the Neolithic to the present, using first-hand accounts and sources. From pre-historic grooming rituals to New Age medicine, from ascetics to cosmetics, Smith looks at how different cultures have interpreted and striven for personal cleanliness and shows how, throughout history, this striving for purity has brought great social benefits as well as great tragedies. It is probably safe to say that no-one who reads this book will look at his or her body (or bathroom) in quite the same way again.

Book School Hygiene and the Laws of Health

Download or read book School Hygiene and the Laws of Health written by Charles Porter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Hygiene and the Laws of Health: A Text-Book for Teachers and Students in Training The matter upon which this book is founded, formed the basis of a course of lectures delivered to the teachers acting under the Education Committee of Sheffield and the students of the Sheffield Training College. Some of those ,who attended the lectures being kind enough to consider them of value in connection with their school work, it was determined to arrange them in book form, in the hope that the information they contained might be of assistance to teachers elsewhere. The idea of the Education Committee in arranging for the course of lectures, was to afford the teachers an opportunity of acquiring such information as might assist them in protecting the health of the school children. It was desired that the course might include instruction, not only in what have been called the "laws of health," which the teachers might in turn impart to the children, but also hints on the manner of detecting diseases likely to be met with in school. The lectures themselves were largely modelled on the plan set out in the syllabus for the Sanitary Institute examination in School Hygiene: each system in the body was taken up in turn, the structure and functions of the organs composing it were considered, and the modes in which they might be affected by school conditions and disease, and how they were to be protected were described. The arrangement adopted for the lectures has been continued in the following pages, and each system has been treated of in a separate chapter in the first part of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hygiene and Public Health MY experience as a teacher at University College has for some time led me to believe that a small work on Hygiene, concisely yet clearly written, would be of value to those who are desirous of becoming acquainted with this important branch of science. The sanitary education which is deficient in a know ledge of the sub-divisions of the main science, must be considered in some degree incomplete. It has been my endeavour therefore to Occupy, within a small space, nearly the whole field of sanitary science, and to give the reader the Opportunity of acquiring such an elementary knowledge on every topic as will enable him to refer with advantage to the larger and more abstruse text-books.
